Keeping with the positive vs negative theme: the last few months I’ve had lots of free time to ride and made big gains. Annoyingly, most water fountains are turned off 😡🥵
I've done this climb, very tough, but the scenery is worth it. The Jenks Lake route is beautiful too and tough climb as well. Very humbling watching well conditioned world class athletes ride the same roads, keep the videos coming Phil, stay safe, peace!!!!
Your mention about hearing one negative comment sure hits home right now. With Covid, riots and the election happening, it's a quite stressful at times. Peace and safe riding y'all.
Thank you, for taking us on your beautiful ride!!! =) Fun!!=) How he pedals, talking and filming at high altitude, what lung power ,crazy. Awesome!!!! Also, THANK YOU ,for your message, THINK POSITIVE ! !!!
Next time: keep an eye out for the reopened campsites: he water is open and available at the Barton flats camp ground and San G. Family camp ground on hwy38. Happy climbing!
Phil, There used to be a ride up that thing called Breathless Agony. See if you can find the route, Redlands to Onyx Summit but with 11,000 feet of climbing.
I was living in those mountains-Running Springs-When Dorner was was trying to evade police. I was just a young teenager then. Was a crazy time. Was a few days long, I believe? Remember seeing full on swat/military humvees driving along HWY18 and we had a curfew set at one point of all that to ensure people’s safety. Crazy, Crazy times.
Hope you’re considering air quality and doing the ride early. On Friday, 6/26 5:00 pm, the AQI on Apple Maps was indicating 152 and in the red. Beautiful views, though.
40 C is Zwift weather. Living in the Middle East, we hit 54 the week before last and most days hang around 46 from about 10:00 until 16:00, so riding outside is just not something I do until Fall.
I hate all the negativity! My father always said, "It takes a lot of that a boys to make up for one oh shit!" Heat Advisory every day this week in Florida. The view from the top of the pass was worth watching the climb. Great video 👍😎
Dorner was indeed hiding out in a cabin in Big Bear over the course of a weekend for 3 or 4 days. He then ended up stealing a vehicle (maybe 2 I think) and ended up at the bottom of the road in Seven Oaks where they finally tracked him down. There is actually a fantastic restaurant down there called Seven Oaks Lodge (the owner had his truck stolen by Dorner at gun point on HWY 38). Not to be that guy that calls you out for details, but I lived on Jenks Lake Road at the time. Anyways, love the video and I'm sure the climb from Redlands to BB was hot and brutal!
My last venture up that route in 2011 was memorable. Got a pic of me with that now disappeared sign as proof. The ride back down was L O N G. Then the last 10 or 12 into Redlands at a minor negative (2-3%?) gradient was into a stiff headwind, making descending at 12 mph quite pathetic. Fortunately, a train of roadies passed me and shouted to jump on the back. Totally rejuvenated me enough to take a turn at the front once or twice to keep us moving +20 mph.
See below, I enjoyed this, felt a little like I was there with you. Beautiful surroundings, slightly out of breath chatting away witzh your cycling buddies. The no water, and the bad weather unprepared stories. I've been there but never there......
For the temperature alone the climb from Redlands is killer. When I did it last summer it was *only* 97 F, and I was questioning every decision I’d made to that point in life.
Michael Dreksler im from Sevenoaks. We were called one oak for a while after a big storm in 1987 blew the rest of them down. I got a chuckle when Phil mentioned the one in CA.
Pleasantly pleasing video. Is there any chance that you could post a link to your bike helmet? I like that there’s just little wires coming down around the ears and then an adjustable bit for the chin strap. Thanks!
Okay, looks like it’s a Mavic helmet, but as far as I can tell that specific helmet is only available in Europe. This doesn’t bode well for me in Michigan. Bummer.
The other part about Dorner: "In two separate incidents during the manhunt, police shot at three civilians unrelated to Dorner, mistaking their pickup trucks for the vehicle being driven by Dorner. One of the civilians was hit by the police gunfire, another was wounded by shattered glass, and a third individual was injured when police rammed his vehicle and opened fire. The officers involved were not charged with any crime." Because, brave, heroes, etc. etc.
in the Southern Hemisphere we drive on the left, I wish YT had a simple switch to mirror descents. To hell with negativity, although, it is simply the other pole. we need both.
It doesn’t even have to be a negative comment. It could be someone expressing their opinion and then others who disagree feel obligated to make another comment and try to convince you that your OPINION is somehow wrong. I don’t think people on the internet understand what an opinion is lmao
Hi Phil I loved watching your videos and following your activities. However, I have to say that I’m a little disappointed with your comments on Christopher Doner. You know the “Big Bear killer” as you stated in your video. Well there is a story to his sad ending and if you were actively listening to what Dave Chappelle was attempting to convey to his audience on the subject matter of Christopher Dorner then you would somewhat understand what triggered his insane transactions that caused the lives of innocent citizens and tragically his. By no means - I am condoning the action of Christopher Dorner or anyone that would that law in their hands and I don’t want to cause the pain to the victim’s families, but please be mindful of your platform and the audience that you have inroad to influence. I don’t want to police free speech nor do I want to regulate out dialogue of sensitive subject matter but please recognize that our nation is going through some tough social, racial, and political issues that really need more than just a one minute rambling of a guy going up a side of mountain on bike.
Phil Gaimon First of all thank you for responding to my comments. I realize that you referenced Dave in your comments, but Phil keep in my that some people are not as enlightened as you and they are not most likely going to lean in and do little bit digging to understand the whole picture. I’m guilty myself of it. I don’t know you personally but what I’ve seen of you via your UA-cam platform is a very social and cultural aware guy. Plus you have to be cool. You’re a cyclist.
Great video. I'm 72 and retired.. I love just going out for a bike ride. So relaxing.
Of note, that while climbing up a mountain, at altitude, he's completing full sentences. That's how you know you're a cyborg.
I agree. That level of fitness is astounding. And if you think he is doggin it, he's probably cruising up at 20kph or more lol!
Pretty sure this was on Voigt-Kampff.
The funny thing is he is probably doing 5W/kg while talking to the camera
Really dig this format. Can we agree to call a “Vélog”?🤓
I second this motion.
Keeping with the positive vs negative theme: the last few months I’ve had lots of free time to ride and made big gains. Annoyingly, most water fountains are turned off 😡🥵
Agree - The plans for water and bathrooms have gotten very complex.
I've done this climb, very tough, but the scenery is worth it. The Jenks Lake route is beautiful too and tough climb as well. Very humbling watching well conditioned world class athletes ride the same roads, keep the videos coming Phil, stay safe, peace!!!!
My dopamine spikes when I see a new posted video. Love cycling and your videos.
Thanks for the view! And I did enjoy it more than you did. Makes me want to get up on the Blue Ridge Parkway! Thanks for that.
Phill I SERIOUSLY appreciate your videos. Keep them going. Thanks man
Your mention about hearing one negative comment sure hits home right now. With Covid, riots and the election happening, it's a quite stressful at times. Peace and safe riding y'all.

Stellar little video Phil! Love the simplicity and fundamental insights. The view from the top looked well worth the effort, keep up the great work..
Next time: keep an eye out for the reopened campsites: he water is open and available at the Barton flats camp ground and San G. Family camp ground on hwy38. Happy climbing!

I love the outcome/format/angle of the new content. Keep it going, it is organic.
Hope you’re considering air quality and doing the ride early. On Friday, 6/26 5:00 pm, the AQI on Apple Maps was indicating 152 and in the red. Beautiful views, though.
Glad to see you in our local mountains!
Now, that's a nice place to ride! Maybe I'll make there eventually after things get back to somewhat normal.
Nature is awesome! Thanx for letting us take part :-)
40 C is Zwift weather. Living in the Middle East, we hit 54 the week before last and most days hang around 46 from about 10:00 until 16:00, so riding outside is just not something I do until Fall.
Phoenix, AZ, USA here, we're still riding in 45-50c here too, past 50 I'll stay inside.
5:31 Phil remembered the mistake from his last Big Bear video and took the safe route and said "few-hundred." Haha
Thank you for including the celsius value, and my condolances/ respect for having to endure such heat.
I hate all the negativity! My father always said, "It takes a lot of that a boys to make up for one oh shit!" Heat Advisory every day this week in Florida. The view from the top of the pass was worth watching the climb. Great video 👍😎

Some of those shoulders are bigger than our highways here in the UK! 👌 I could almost smell the pines... 🥰
‘Big Bear Wattage Cottage’ is a state of mind.
Phil what a cool climb if you don’t mind what’s the average percentage of the climb please
You should come out to Raincross tomorrow morning starting at Stells coffee in Redlands. Just saying.... :)
Great vlog, views and podcast recommendation, chapeau!
Phill, you da man. That is all. Oh and please come to Seattle for a hill climb segment!
Love your glasses, any recs on a similar model that is photochromic?
See below, I enjoyed this, felt a little like I was there with you. Beautiful surroundings, slightly out of breath chatting away witzh your cycling buddies. The no water, and the bad weather unprepared stories. I've been there but never there......
GREAT VIDEO. MORE ON YOUR ROAD TO BEAT EVERESTING RECORD...PLEASE!!!! I'LL BE DOING ONE JULY 21st. Don't worry about me breaking 7hrs 30'
“Get a few hundred more oaks and let’s talk.” 😂 That one was a real knee-slapper Phil 😂
I'm also working on 100°f heat training in norcal. Lots of mistakes and lessons learned ☠
You passed a lovely fast flowing mountain stream Phil, there's your bidon refill never out of stock & open all hours.
You trying to give me diarrhea?
Bucolic scenery, Phil!
Just got back from a MTB ride in 7 oaks today, saw you climbing up by Angelus Oaks Store...your an animal!
Nice day!
For the temperature alone the climb from Redlands is killer. When I did it last summer it was *only* 97 F, and I was questioning every decision I’d made to that point in life.
Is that just a typical endurance ride or are you doing some intervals/efforts during the climb?
Well done Phil!
Awesome place Phil, amazing views!
Phil, I dare you to take on Lane Maher's triple Everest!
That first stretch before the turn at Forest Home is miserable, especially with a head wind.
Phil, I grew up in Thousand Oaks and had never heard of Seven Oaks until this video. Sorry to burst your bubble.
There is a Sevenoaks in Kent, UK too!
And a Four Oaks in North Carolina. :-)
Michael Dreksler im from Sevenoaks. We were called one oak for a while after a big storm in 1987 blew the rest of them down. I got a chuckle when Phil mentioned the one in CA.
There's a famous restaurant in RI called Twin Oaks. That's all I've got 😄
The Chapelle special is called 8:46 - I highly recommend it
This. Everyone needs to hear the story behind the cop "who got himself shot."
@@kylecox3497 if experiencing the gamut of rage, pain and despair means "getting himself shot" then i guess i am bound for a bullet as well
Philliam, how do you like the Bike Goodr sunglasses? I've been eyeing a pair of them and reviews seem vary depending on where you look. Thanks!
I like em. For the price easy call to get 10 goodrs vs one from another brand
Phil Gaimon awesome! Thanks!
Love some mountain riding.
which bluetooth headphones are you using for cycling?
Pleasantly pleasing video. Is there any chance that you could post a link to your bike helmet? I like that there’s just little wires coming down around the ears and then an adjustable bit for the chin strap. Thanks!
Okay, looks like it’s a Mavic helmet, but as far as I can tell that specific helmet is only available in Europe. This doesn’t bode well for me in Michigan. Bummer.
It’s Mavic Comete! You can order from their site I think
Phil Gaimon thanks! Found it on the Backcountry website:-)
I moved to Redlands, gotta do this one
Welcome to the best place in the world!
I ❤️ Redlands, lived there a bit from 1998-2004 still a fav place to visit.
Thank you, loving it here
Hi Phil, what equipment do you use for shoot these videos and keep the voice so clear and wind noice low. Enjoy your weekend :)
Keep making video Phil ❤️
40 Celsius for the rest of the world you mean. Only 14c here mid summer!
You need a sunglasses sponsor 😎
so now christopher dorner will forever be associated with dave chappelle and this vlog.
Tell us about your bike Phil....please 😉
40 degrees C.. i'm a dripping mess after 26 degrees C..i doubt i would even ride in that temp.
going to onyx summit from big bear is my favorite ride. too bad there’s just a turnout at the top
3:01 Can anyone identify the license plate of that damn truck that passed way too close to Phil? If yes, please post it. Thanks!
I noticed that too.
angelus oaks is where we refuel
Freakenomics podcast is the best
Look at those shoulders. That's gotta be some nice riding.
40c? Hail Mary! Greetings from a “Euro” :-)

I'm surprised you've ridden Big Bear so much but haven't nabbed the Keller Peak KOM...best climb on the mountain.

Did breathless agony a couple years back. Miserable!

I wish my home was in the Mountains. The highest elevation in my area is 145 Meters.
It's not all that riding in the mountains has its ups and it's downs 😂
FLY DORNER
Traffic!
If you dislike downhill on climbs you would have disliked Mount Nebo in the tour of Utah
"Euros", lol
Redlands... 2200'

edited and filmed by the same man. sick.
the Euros - or the rest of the gd world XD

That’s...why I referenced Chappelle and alluded to the more complicated story. Literally I did what you’re saying I should have done
