On their path they played in Vilnius against FK Vėtra. That club was a raucous underdog club of the people which disbanded and disappeared in the middle of the next season 2010! This is why I support Fulham. I don't wanna see a club rack up as many trophies as it can, I wanna see a club trying its absolute hardest to stay up in the top flight. Underdog stories like Fulham's give the fans more excitement when they reach a major competition final like this. There's just way more enthusiasm among the Fulham fans than say, if Man United reached the Europa League final, because they're won countless EPL titles before and a good fee Champions League titles.
Underdog stories are just more fun and exciting to watch. And knowing that Hodgson managed to lead Fulham into relative success in the European side of things, I am curioud how he'll do at Crystal Palace.

You know even after his Liverpool and England debacles, I still think Roy the owl Hodgson isn't a terrible manager. His time at Fulham is a perfect example of that. He just should've never been given jobs where his teams are expected to play attacking, expansive football.
You could tell by 2016 that he had no clue what to do with all the options he had in Kane, Vardy, prime Sturridge and Welbeck, Rooney, Sterling, Alli, etc. Man was trying out new systems even during the group stages. That's how we ended up with.... Harry Kane on corners and a clearly over the hill Rooney as CM.
Be interesting if he can salvage the dumpster fire that is Watford.

Zoltan Gera is the brilliant kind of player you can only really appreciate if you haven't just supported a top team your whole life. He was cultured, composed in making clever little plays. Wonderful to watch, a smaller club magician rather than a superstar, and sometimes that makes them even more exciting. When Messi does something excellent it's expected, sometimes taken for granted. When Zoltan Gera and players like him produce a touch of something like that magic it's like a bolt of inspiration striking from nowhere.

This is like “Atletico Madrid” in 2016 epic run to be runners up:
    - They got out of group stage and face PSV , in which they won in penalties
    - Then on quarter finals they face the Champions Barcelona , in which in a long and reverse game , they manage to beat in an aggregate of 3-2
    - The semis they face off the favorites and their “old black beast”, Bayern Munich under pep. They somehow survive against Bayern munich on a 2-2 aggregate and moving to the grand finals by visitor’s goal
    - The gran finals was against Real Madrid , their home rival and the team that beat them on 2014. Atletico miss a penalty , but then equalize the game 10 minutes before extra time. And lose on penalties afterwards.
    - This run is probably one of the best underdog runner ups ever. Having to face Barca , Bayern and Real Madrid back to back (The top 3 teams at that time) just to lose in a penalty shoot out.

I like the element of Football Manager about the graphics depicting the goals against Juve. It did have that surreal, fictional, underdog exhileration about it.But this does not highlight fully the juggernaut of that Juventus team; yes they had Trezeguet, and Diego. But they also had in that team: WC winners Cannavaro, Camoranesi (and later Del Piero). Plus: Salihamdzik, Grosso, and Sissoko. Players who were highly rated at the time, or established as among the best in the world. Astonishing game.

When people belittle the Europa League I think of moments like this, or AC Milan playing at Fratton Park or Boro's run. Even this season you have West Ham's run. I'm a Chelsea fan and our Europa League wins in 2013 and 2019 (I was at the 2nd leg Semi and Final of 2019) excited me a lot. Some big club fans act too spoilt. European football drama, excitement, transcendental and ethereal feelings are not exclusive to the Champions League (though for the record I was at the 2021 final of course :P).

I think it has suffered due to its rebranding. When it was called the UEFA Cup? It had kudos. Trying to turn it into a mini Champions League (for which I agree the re-branding HAS worked), and giving the top 5/6 leagues far too many places at the top table has really hurt it. Also - I wish the Cup Winners Cup was back. For actual Cup Winners.

Please do one about how great Galatasaray used to be in the 90s, making a name as a tough away side for even European giants like Man United and Barcelona. They then went on to cultivate the golden generation of Turkish football that won 3rd place in WC 2002. They added names like Taffarel, Hagi and Popescu and eventually won the UEFA League undefeated in 2000 alongside their fourth consecutive league title, the domestic cup and the Super Cup. For a number of years they competed quite well and caused upsets here and there, had a resurgence in 2011 and did real well in CL.
If you consider how bad they are doing right now, I think a relatively overlooked European Giant (both physically from Europe and has a fanbase larger than the population of quite a few European countries) in terms of size and legacy could be very interesting to look at. They hold pretty much every record in Turkish football for firsts and mosts and a lot of "only"'s. Only Turkish team to ever reach #1 in the FIFA World Club rankings. Despite doing terribly in the league, they still topped a difficult Europa League group alongside Marseille, Lazio and Lokomotiv with 0 defeats and only 2 conceded.
