  • The Christmas markets in Romania were absolutely amazing. Sibiu, Romania was our first stop and the magical atmosphere of the Sibiu Christmas market was unlike anything we have experienced. Brașov was next, which turned out to be our least favorite Romanian Christmas Market, but one of our favorite Romanian cities. Bucharest, Romania then provided us with another amazing Christmas market, and a much larger one.

The winter time in Romania gives a moody and dry feeling outside every day. You may think this would be unpleasant, but we actually found Romania's wintertime vibe to be refreshing, mystical and special. We enjoyed every day in Romania, and spent a good 10 of them at the Christmas markets. We stayed in Sibiu, Romania the longest and visited its Christmas market (just a short Uber ride from our house) around 8 times. It was located in Piata Mare (the large square), a centralized meeting point in the city of Sibiu. With gorgeous 12th century buildings on all sides of the square, the Christmas market's atmosphere was hard to beat. Themed lights were cast onto the sides of each of these buildings, and string lights stretched overtop the Christmas market in every direction.
The Sibiu Christmas market had a handful of interesting and delicious food options, an ice skating rink, an opportunity to pose for pictures with Santa, winter clothing vendors, toys and ornaments for sale, alcoholic drinks, a giant (and spectacular) Christmas tree, charity organizations, a kids zone, craft making, and much more. We never thought we would continue to revisit the Christmas market in Sibiu during our 20+ days spent in the city until we realized how magical and community oriented it was. We even were lucky enough to meet some of the nicest Romanian charity organizers and learn even more about Romanian culture, and the city of Sibiu.
The Christmas market in Brașov was very spread out, dispersed around the council square. While we found Brașov as a city to be unique and exciting, its Christmas market was not. Okay, possibly we had worn ourselves out of Christmas markets all together after visiting Sibiu's so many times; but Brașov's just didn't provide the same magical energy. It did have a lot of the same elements as Sibiu's but it was missing the small town charm and it was much more of a tourist draw.
The Christmas market in Bucharest, however, truly revamped our christmasy feelings. Though the first night we visited it was pouring rain, we knew that a good time was in store for our return the next day. We were not wrong.
Bucharest itself is an impressive city; everywhere you go the buildings look large, but there is still plenty of spacious escapes. The Christmas market in Bucharest was exactly that. The location was just near some of Bucharest's main city attractions, but was the biggest of all 3 Christmas markets. Just walking around the inside of the market was an escape from the city because they somehow encapsulated the atmosphere of Christmas within the walls.
The ice rink, large scale Christmas decorations, a towering ferris wheel, and plenty of appetizing food trucks put the Bucharest Christmas market right near the top of the list with Sibiu. The only difference being the quaintness and charm of Sibiu's market, which was impossible to match in a big city.
There is no doubt in our minds we will be back to Romania again to revisit these cities and Christmas markets. We also recommend Romania as a travel destination to anyone of any age! It blew our expectations out of the water, so check back to our channel for more of our Romanian adventures!

Great videos from Sibiu! I’ve been going back-and-forth between Sibiu and Dallas Texas for the last 16 years. I stay longer in Sibiu and miss it more than ever now.

You should visit Kharkov (Ukraine), the central streets are very beautiful, you can spend 4-5 hours walking through the city center to the central park, everything is decorated with lights, many installations, fairs and a beautiful central square. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Bucharest.
