Great video Paul. I see they have this unit in a 500 series. I take it that this box would not compare to having red and blue silk in the same box at the same time for a mix master bus?
That´s what I am thinking.. That It´s better to get the Neve MBT than this.
I wouldn't compare it to silk red. They actually go well together. The 500 series version is pretty much the same as this one.
Help me understand the curves here: What is the difference between simply boosting that frequency? That is, are the curves here part of the technology so that it boosts and cuts in ways that are difficult to reproduce with other units?
The Kush Clariphonic is a parallel EQ, the output is the sum of the untouched input signal + the output of the Focus engine + the output of the Clarity engine.
The bands are extremely wide.
Granted you ran good sounding source material through the Clariphonic, but even with exaggerated settings the only bad thing was that the frequency balance was off, as soon as you backed off to something appropriate it sounded extremely pleasing.
I guess the curves are very smooth and gradual? Granted I don't have your hears, room, or speakers, but I had a hard time trying to understand where the unit was starting to affect the track.
These were exaggerated settings going to the extreme. You would use it more in the 10 o'clock position. Sometimes further but this all depends on the frequency you select.
Yes, I like when you exaggerate to make us clearly hear what it's doing and then back off to, makes it easier to understand what is being affected.@@AudioAnimalsStudio
Because it’s proportional q like an SSL pink knob, great for musical boosts not so much for precise cutting.

No, I had these for a few years now. We recently swapped both our clariphonics out for the AudioTales 1951 EQ. Which is why I wanted to review them before I swap them out.

Do you use the Audio Tales 1951 in Mid Side, or as your Smile enhancement EQ?
The 1951 wouldn't be able to be used in mid side as one knob controls both left and right. The 1951 does low and high shelves. The 1954 does the two mid bands.

@MMSMUZIK yeah turn it into a 4 band EQ rather than just a low and high shelf. Brilliant combination.

Is 1951 EQ better??
Yes. This is what I have switched the kush clariphonic for in all my studios.
they do a plugin version of this how ever you cant beat the hardware version in most cases
I'm currently editing up the plugin vs hardware video. Coming this weekend I hope.
