For the first question, I thought there wasn’t suppose to be a comma if a dependent follows an independent.

I believe that’s called a participle phrase there… anyone out there who know better feel free to clarify…
That’s why I wouldn’t worry too much about complicated grammar rules like the ones you learn in English class. Stick to my rules and you’ll be good. Use a comma whenever you need a brief pause (just make sure not to use it to separate standalone thoughts).
