I just did the R28 mod and love the result. Why they don't come this way from the factory I'll never know. My Phase 90 has gone from a pedal I never used to be permanently switched on. Great video Mike Bradley.
I rarely used my Phase 90, because of exactly that; the boost and the overdriven sound that comes with that too (or maybe it's the amp reacting to the boost, but either way it was not what I wanted). Thanks for sharing this video! This mod so easy, it can hardly go wrong, and now the sound is exactly what I'd expect and want from a Phase 90 (or any phaser for that matter)!
Thanks Mike, I have never considered modding a pedal before. Recently picked up a Phase 90 and was not impressed by the volume jump. This mod was hellish easy to do and now the Phase 90 sounds much sweeter and sits in the mix way better. Cudos to you sir!
Did it man!! I was almost sending it back, but i am love with the swirl. Now the phaser is giving my bass just the lush swirl and not anymore the overdrive and mid bump. Thanx!
Man, I'm glad I found this video. I've had a phase 90 for years now but never used because all my amps hated it, in front and loop, couldn't stand the buzzing (even when off) and the absurd volume boost. No more!!! This thing sounds amazing now! Thanks for that.
The boost in volume helps to compensate when playing in a full band for the loss in volumen when the pedal modulates. In a bedroom settings sounds great, but playing live you’ll notice that your guitar will get lost in the mix, and you to compensate, will turn up the volume in your amp or pedals
Man I watched your mod a lot of times I finally tried it on my phase 90 . It sounds great thanks for the instruction on snipping it. It’s finally not overpowering my clean tone .
Thx for the video Mike, you save my pedal to go to the trash, after the mod it becomes much better, the volume is still increased a little bit, but nearly fixed! you are great!
Hy,saw this video an years before ...than tought shall I do this or not? Than forgot, now somehow I watch it again and do this. But with switch in cirkle of R28 so I can choose the mode. Absolutely beautiful idea. Especialy on high volume playing! Thanks for that video
I’m trying to reduce the footprint of my board cause I’ve got 19 pedals. Switched from the phase 100 to the 90 and the 90 was way overpowering on volume but effect is way better. I am doing this mod tomorrow for sure. Don’t buy the 100. While it seems more versatile it’s just WAY different and I didn’t like it. My 90s boss phaser was way better but too many options is more of a pain. I don’t wanna spend 6 hours dialing in sound. Keep it simple. Update: just did it. Stupid easy and HUGE difference! Solved my problem
Very cool. If I ever get my hands on a proper Les Paul I definitely want to do the 50s wiring mod, but I know basically nothing about how electronics work haha. Nice to see stuff like this is doable without an extensive background in electrical engineering.
Thanks for the post. High Def and clear. Makes a clear difference! First I had the snip now so has my Phase 90! The Phase 90 sound so cool, even if I don't. ; )
Just as a point of interest, if you had spent a couple of pounds on a mini toggle switch added it in you would have had the best of both, your pedal would be Block & Script. Easy to still to add in, I did same as you then revisited it and put the switch in. What I found was I used it in script mode 80% of the time but it’s still handy to have the block as well. Adding the switch will cost less than £5 but remember you are gaining an extra pedal for a fiver. You can find videos showing how too do it on here very easy mod.
I just bought one while here in Thailand and the return policies here suck and hated that mid/treble boost and thought I was stuck with it. I did the mod and now I can actually use this pedal! Whooo! ;-)
For yourself and all others attempting to do a mod like this, NEVER USE A SCREWDRIVER TO CUT A RESISTOR OUT, YOU WILL POTENTIALLY DAMAGE SOMETHING. Use CUTTERS.
I bought the block logo Phase 90 and exchanged it the next day for a used custom shop script 90. I felt the same way about the block 90, too harsh. The script sound worked better for me. It's funny you posted this today because I replaced my script 90 with a Phase 95 yesterday. I wanted to save space on my board and I like the extra tonal options that I can mess with in times when I'm lacking inspiration.
The EVH phase 90 has a switch to change from block to script. If you wanted you could get creative and put a switch on the block 90 that would essentially "cut" that wire when you want to and still have it in the circuit for when you want it.
Just sooo much better..l can't think of anything Mike plays where he would want that tone in his circuit.. without it, it simply fits him like a glove!
I wish I had the balls to get inside the electronics of my guitars and pedals. Knowing my luck (and complete incompetence), I'd end up breaking something completely irrelevant to the task, like a window. You've done well there, Mike!
Dude... Just watched your video today (april 2021). Why didn't you tell me you were dabbling in effects pedals mods :-) The Phase 90 is a true legend! Hope you're well !!
Did a snip today. It's so much better. Video can't translate well how large of a volume boost you've got with a stock pedal. And especially if your signal wasn't crystal clean already it created this really unpleasant brittle top end. It's pretty much all gone. And the phasing itself is more subtle. If you let the notes ring it doesn't become louder than guitar itself anymore, which drove me nuts.
i have an original MXR Phase 90 (pre Dunlop as indicated by the lack of the led indicator light) and it still has the rubber over the adjustment pot to enable adjustment with the foot :)
Please do not desolder the resistor. This is a multi-layer board. Just snip it. From stinkpot.se website: "Then locate R28 (right above the output jack) and clip one end off. You can clip the resistor out at both ends if you like, or just cut one end and raise it enough to break the connection. I can’t stress this enough - one of the through-plated holes also serve as a pathway between the two sides of the circuit board, and it is very easy to damage it (leaving you with a dead pedal). A pair of small cutting pliers is all you need, and will keep the pedal safe and working fine."
I bought a phase 90 and the back plate removal was no problem. However there is a large piece of foam rubber in it attached to the electronics. The battery has no place this way :-(
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I did it myself by just de-soldering one side of the capacitor from the board, and now it sounds so much more like Eddie's did!!! I was thinking of putting an on off switch on it and wiring it between the board and capacitor so I could change it back whenever I want. I also noticed a mini potentiometer on the board. If you turn it, it takes away or adds more warble effect.
Yeah what's the rule measure twice cut once. I only have one pedal the boss sd1. I did a mod on that. I didn't like it so I put it back. Usually when I try doing something when I put put it back together it doesn't work. Lol Have a good day.
I like modding pedals but I don't think you'll be able to do it for much longer. Companies like Boss have switched to SMD which will probably put a stop to most people's mods. Analogeman has already said he can't mod Boss pedals anymore :-(
SMD wouldn't stop me. I've got a hot air reworking unit. Wouldn't want to have to muck around with ball array chips but simple SMD discretes aren't too much bother. Before the hot air I just used to use a very fine bit on my iron. The more successful of the pedal modders who've now gone over to manufacturing don't want to have to bother with modding. I'm sure Mike Analogman Could rework SMD stuff if he really wanted to ... 😉
I'm curious. What I don't like about this pedal is the volume going up and down during the phasing. It has a sound I love with the volume at the high part of the swoosh, but then it gets muddy and gets quiet. I had hoped I'd love this pedal but the up and down volume SUCKS. I'd like to find my tone, let it swoosh but keep the volume the same. I literally HATE it. My goal is set the rate of the phase swoosh and keep the volume there. It sounds like someone is turning the volume up and down as I play. Blows. Mod for that?
@@MikeBradleyofficial only when I use humbucker pickups and strum something strong, with simple pickups it hardly saturates, I found this by searching the internet and I found that many with this problem: "Is it normal to get distortion from the MXR Phase 90 when you're playing harmonically complex chords? With the mod the phaser sound more like a EHX Small Stone. I own the black russian version with chickenhead knob. But i mod my one, i replaced one resistor for less volumen drop.

tdunster2011 my guess is that they sell the vintage and the EVH version for more $$$ so they had to make the new standard less desirable.
I have to do this! Ive felt the same way for about 25 yrs owning mine! Has always underwhelmed in this regard.
Having the same problem with my phase 90 regarding volume increase. Just done the “snip” and wow what a difference! Thanks so much for the video. 🤘🏼

Isn’t that just a matter of proper EQ?

Yes dude i had the same problem. I mainly wanted to do this because it fogs my clean tone pretty bad
MOD 4:30 5:46 5:52 6:12 6:53 - Before = 2:41 2:56 (Cln) 3:07 3:15 (Fuzz) 8:18 9:05 9:48 10:09 11:09 - After = 7:09 7:43 (with Fuzz) 10:00 10:36 11:35 - less volume / less presence - depends on what you need. Great Playing!!! Might mod w/ toggle switch - so I can have both FX
Thx for the video Mike, you save my pedal to go to the trash, after the mod it becomes much better, the volume is still increased a little bit, but nearly fixed! you are great!
Easiest and most effective mod ever. Piece of cake, thanks mate!
Thank you! I just did the mod and I absolutely love the pedal now!

The volume increase is still there but very light comparing to what it was.

Mod sounds marvelous, you're so tech savy, Mike!
Welp I've got a new project to do this week now lol.
Takes on a whole new meaning for “getting the snip”!. Thanks for the video this now puts the pedal on my want to buy list.
Thanks for the post. High Def and clear. Makes a clear difference! First I had the snip now so has my Phase 90! The Phase 90 sound so cool, even if I don't. ; )

That made me cringe when he did that
Better for sure. I just de-soldered one end of the R28. Anyone can get in there and get this done, or get help from a handy friend!

You did a fixer on the mixer ,you should've played the mission impossible theme whilst diving in for the cut you electrician you

Hahaha you make it sound like I’m clever! Hahaha
Thanks Mike, I was thinking of trading mine for a small stone, but this brought it back to life!
Fogot to mention ,the tele is starting to show some arm wear , the nitro finish is relicing up nicely
gus dupree yeah it’s certainly been played!
Thank you, Mike! I have the same problem and I'm going to take the same risk as you! 😎🎸
Oh ya, much better. You're like a hardcore moder now. :)
hahaha.. Oh I wish that was the case my friend! :)
Hell yeah. Worked for me as well, thank you.

"i just try off video so i don't look like an idiot" genious , just tried, now going to reharsal room for some god damn rock'n'roll, see yaa
damn it's sick now, it does not sound like an explosive diarrhea anymore 👍
Glad to be able to help.

way better, it behaves nicer in front of my muff
Great video, thanks!
Script is better but block can be cool sometimes for more aggressive applications. I have one of each. Great bang 4 buck at $50-$60 used.
agree! block is cool for slow, distorted sweeps
También tengo el Script y el Logo y los uso para diferentes cosas

Great ! Thanks for sharing🙏
Ahhhh! I assumed it was my pedal board set up or amp reacting with the phase 90! Doing this asap!
Mike Bradley can you tell me the part # on the 8 legged op amp on this MXR phase 90 mine needs replacing and I can't make out the # Thanks.
Or anybody know it?
I cut the R28 and i plugged it in, no effect at all,. Pleace help!
Anyone know what the trim pot is above the standard speed knob?
Soooo I just snipped both ends and took it right out. Was I only supposed to clip one end?
Ok to snip both. See my post above.

Hi Mike. Did the unwanted volume boost on stock Phase 90 vanished after the mods? Thanks in advance.
completely!
He looks a bit young to have the snip.

WTF dude you don't have a soldering iron or even just a simple cutter? What a shame
