This is such a great video thank you. Yes, OBVIOUSLY you're not saying these sounds are emulations of the respective "real deals". But this is an incredibly eye-opening demo of how many usable "near enough" sounds you can get from this. I need more of this content in my life, and less endless pedal demos that just feed my tragic dopamine GAS loop buying pedals which I never learn the full capabilities of (including this one). I'd be so much better a musician (and a slightly less broke one) if I had five pedals which I'd totally mastered incorporating into actual music, rather than 50 that I only use for one thing each (or don't use at all).
Awesome! I love the Phase 90 too, and I use it as my only modulation pedal. It works as a solo boost to kick on for a little extra interest for a solo too, in any of these modes.
I had been looking at DOD phasers cuz I used to have one and really liked it, but after seeing how well this unit works, I believe I'm gonna save alot of cash and go with the MXR 90!! Thanks for your demo and helping me to make up my mind, lolol!!
Excellent demo! I agree 100% I am still blown away by how many sounds I can get out of my MXR Phase 90 when it only has one knob!! I use it in place of my flanger most of the time now I do love my RetroVibe by Jam Pedals & use that a lot but I do still use the Phase 90 for some "Univib-ish" stuff from the 1970s I know there are other Phase Pedals out there with more options, etc... but why not start with the best & it is under $100 I bought mine new last year for $75. Almost every guitar legend has this pedal on their board. You mentioned Eddie Van Halen & he even put out his customized Phase 90 that is a little more expensive if that is something a person might be interested in. Dave Gilmour used this pedal A LOT especially in the 1970s but it has always been on his board. This is a great addition to any pedalboard & y will not be disappointed.
I imagine if you throw a chorus pedal on top of the vibe setting it can get even closer. I need to put mine back on the board! I always felt it was not much use for anything else but the VH sweep but saw a few years back that Doug Aldrich was using this pedal exactly for the odd vibe sound he wanted on his small travel board.
Great video really shows the versatility of it. For versatility I can’t imagine a better tone shaping tool than the Boss GE7 equaliser….essential in a gig box.
Lately, I've been wanting a uni vibe and realised a phaser could get extremely close. MXR Phase 45 and 90 are the way to go, and as you said, then some. Kinda skint lately, so I traded for a KMISE Phase 90 clone and it does the job nicely. I'll still be getting a Phase 95 since it does both 45 and 90 script or block letter versions all in one pedal. The KMISE is so good in my opinion, I'll keep it for later when I do a mini pedal affordaboard.
This is is the more modern day version of the “script” phase 90, with the led indicator. Great demo! This thing sounds better than I thought it would. I love all the sounds you were getting on this unit. A true test would be a comparison with an original ‘74 script unit, double coil guitar, and high drive amp. AKA the “EVH” test. I would really like to hear how this more current unit handles those tones.
There are comparisons here on YT. The originals sound more syrupy but often have a limited speed range. They also are not true bypass and only work with a battery, which is a major hassle in the age of pedalboards. This video is just great at highlighting how your live board doesn't need to be gigantic. Our bedroom/studio tone goes out the window the moment we step on a stage. Better focus on playing well than tap dancing on a myriad of pedals.
Great demo of all the sounds you can get out of a phase 90. I like the script more than the block logo because it’s more subtle. I had the 74’ vintage reissue but the bypass wasn’t the greatest so I foolishly got rid of it. I just picked up the csp101 sl and it sounds very close to the 74’. Phase and flanger are my favorites at the moment. Thanks
Ahh. The little Orange box that finds it's way on to everybody's board. I never consider these tonal "cheats" when I use these "go-to" positions. Only that it gets along w/ everything you can mix it with. Lately, I've been using it with dial all the way down to get a real nice swell. This has left me wondering where'd the Phase 45 go? Using the 90, and 45 together would be a trip!
I bet a phaser with a tight delay and a compressor you could get that Andy Summers tone. I run one into an octave fuzz, with a touch of delay for solos you get a nice almost early pumpkins tone, but if you roll back the volume you get that pink floyd thing. You are spot on this is a very versatile pedal, depending on where its in the chain can really change it around too.
Hello, I am writing from Japan. I completely agree with your idea to use the Phase 90 which I experienced before but the thing is how to switch the five effects during the play in a song. Do you have any further idea how to handle it more smoothly during the play? Thank you.
In case you're still looking for a solution to this, there's a few different versions of phasers available in a wah format. The MXR Variphase is probably the best solution since it's a Phase 90 in a wah pedal but it can be hard to find and is pretty big. The Mooer Phaser Player is a better solution since it's smaller and easy to find but there's others available that you may prefer like a Boss PH-3 which can be controlled with an expression pedal.
This is a case of someone who knows what they are doing and gets the best out of what they’ve got. Well done young man but don’t give too many of the pro secrets away excellent lol 👍
I'm gonna give this an A for effort. You put a lot of great "String English" and playing style into making this work, but at the end of the day, it sounded like a Phaser. If you didn't say what you were playing I would have said "It's a Phaser" every clip. Phaser as Univibe was passable. A 4 knob Flanger is the REAL most versatile pedal!
I recently fumbled my way onto an original ‘75 Phase 45. Have you ever played one? It’s the closest thing to an Always On pedal I’ve ever played through or have had. More subtle than the 90. Thanks. I learned some stuff🤙🤙
MXR phase 90 as a...
1:30 chorus
2:45 auto-wah
3:15 classic phaser
4:15 univibe
5:00 rotary
Enjoy!
they all sound like just phaser lol

Thank you for watching!

Looks like I need that pedal now
I’ve never seen this guy but I can’t stop thinking about how he kinda looks like an alternate universe version of Adam Driver
i was just thinking that
Don't insult Jamie like that.
More Adam Friedland imo
Or Barbara Streisand
It's like a 50/50 between Adam Driver and Josh Groban. All whilst being a solid review...
I took my phaser off my pedal board, I was not really using it that much. After watching this it went back on again. Great video.
Very impressed with how you got that "Hendrix at Woodstock" sound (4:16)!
Thanks! A little Marshall style distortion plus phaser can get pretty close when you don't have your Uni-Vibe on you!
Awesome pedal. Years ago I had a Phase 90 and a Phase 100. Both were great pedals. MXR was built like a tank.
One of the most useful gear demos ever!
That was absolutely brilliant buddy. Great playing and ingenious.
Thank you!

Great video, just gone down the route of using a phaser in a classic rock cover band and this has helped immensely. Thanks
Perfect. Well done! I have a huge phaser pedal from the 70s but it's too big for the board!
I have read that the MXR Phase 90 was the pedal that Robin Trower used on Bridge of Sighs

Almost, the univibes tremolo is activated by a photocell which makes more of a wavy type of sound than the swirly sounds a phaser can do.
First pedal I ever bought. Still my favorite, maybe behind my blues driver
Loved it 🌹
amazing video, convinced me in getting the pedal

If you get the rubber knob cover, you can adjust the single knob with your foot as you play!

Phaser after dirt the whole demo? I usually do phaser first but this demo sounds so sick
Yeah, though I sometimes switch it up. Thanks!
Did you ever mention when combining with the dirt and delay pedals what order sounded best for your various MXR Ph 90 settings?
I normally keep the phaser after dirt pedals, but in the Uni-Vibe example here I have the Phase 90 before my Lovepedal Superlead.
I'd say turned all the way up sounds more like a classic univibe sound. maybe sort of mimics a fast leslie sound, but it's def a bit harsh for rotary.
That was a Great Video Thank You!!!
