Trail Vs Enduro Mountain Bikes | Is There Really A Difference?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 гру 2020
- With so many different types of mountain bike available now it can be tricky to work out what is a trail bike and what is an enduro bike. With the help of our good friends at Commencal (and a few different Blakes!), who have provided us with the Meta TR 29 and the Meta AM 29. It’s time to define what these two bikes are all about.

Not fair, should've used the same rider for both bikes.
I mean if they used the same rider he would’ve gotten 2 bikes and commenters would be jealous
@@bentyler5704 True, that is a valid point!
Agreed, enduro Blake probably should have done the whole thing himself and just used editing, I don’t even know who this TBB guy thinks he is...
Because maybe the other one is pro but other one is amateur
yeah this is so not fair ppl
I'm doing my homework but I guess this is more important.
Dam this always happens to me
Im studying for exams i have tomorrow, oh well
Same bro 🤣
Same
no you dont guess its important, YOU KNOW ITS IMPORTANT!!!
The editors deserve a day off for this
Deffffinitely! one of the best edits ive seen in a while!
And blake is awesomely funny! Good job, blake!
Ha ha, like a week solid to edit this. Plus overtime!
@@tobymills160 editors*
Everyone deserves a day off
@@tobymills160 lol , UA-cam gives me the option to translate this to English, I think editor is the correct spelling
As an editor myself, this gives me headache.
I sit here trying to imagine the logistics of shoot day. 😅
Idk, it seems pretty straight forward
Same lmao
i agree to much!!
rather have more info and better comparison than a headache
Blake: "when I'm upset I used to tell to myself a joke I never heard before"
I think this every video but massive respect to the editors, really good work
If u think that every video, then u should say that every video. The editors are really great
The camera work/tracking for the two downhill segments was really well done. The timing of joining behind Blake was particularly enjoyable. Also, the editing/staging to ensure no jarring dialogue when splicing the different Blakes together was so smooth
Yes, finally Commencal on GMBN!
I feel like trailbikes are basicly what enduro bikes used to be last year before 38 forks became a thing again😂
More like before the Specialized Enduro made existing enduro bikes look like trail bikes. The 38 just compounds the issue.
@@vomErsten o wouldn't say it's an issue
All the scales are shifting over time. A lot of XC bikes are now in trail range. Downhill bikes will soon be in Mariana Trench range, underwater lol
@@bananasstuff3344 The issue is category confusion, not bikes getting better.
@@TheJofrica so next year gravel bikes will get suspension and look like XC? xD
crazy how Blake can ride stuff like that without anything to protect his eyes. I cant even ride in summer without that.
Or gloves. He probably doesn’t have the falling over problem I have though.
Just keep your eyes shut, no problem
he has no one in front of him ;)
First thing that came to my mind when I saw the mud. Dude put on some clear lenses and protect those eyes!!!
@@snowfree52 Dosen really matter, I ride with the mudhugger guard, that is way bigger then those Marshguard styled ones and still get crap all over my face
Blake’s too funny 😂
Lol
Yesss😂🤦♂️👌🏼
Which one?
@@steezeandstylish8456 the three?
@@chelarestelar which one is the funniest 🧐
Blake - as at home in front of the camera as behind the bars (of a bike that is). Seriously - one of the best Mountain Bike content creators out there. Thanks GMBN and Blake for high quality entertainment and educational videos.
IMO : if you don't know which type to choose, you need a trail bike. The other types are specialist machines optimised for specific racing events (XC, Enduro, DH, Cyclo-cross...) so they're for people with a racing license, a race schedule pinned to their wall, following a year-long training regimen.
but the meta tr or the clash is the real tough choice...
@@benjaminj.daniel6860 not really, the clash is a park bike, really playful and wants to fly while the tr is your typical trail bike that's great for almost all types of terrain and much more pedally
I have to say that larger riders may prefer the enduro oriented bikes, simply because they're stiffer and feel more stable. I had to exchange my Meta TR for the Meta AM because the TR felt too insubstantial under me. 6'2", 205lbs. Personally, anything less than an enduro bike feels flimsy under me. These new enduro bikes are so lightweight, such good climbers, and with the new geo on bikes now, the larger frame sizes really improve the comfort of bikes for tall/ heavy people.
@@RiggadonDan when did new geometries start? Which years so I get a used bike from then
What is the difference between trail, enduro, freeride and downhill bikes? Or who are just the names of riding styles? I can not understand.
this is what i've been waiting for sooooo long! comparative test are the only ones i look forward to since many mtb brands started to make very similar frames (ehm santa i'm looking at you) with tiny differences so it's very confusing to find wich bike suits your riding! for me the tr looks perfect but also the clash is stunning and both can be used as freeride rigs... so hard to pick one!!! nowadays bikes looks and ride great
The best video ever on this channel was Doddy dream bike build.
These - bike vs bike - videos are a close 2nd.
I LOVE these and will gladly watch every second of them. Please do one every week!!
One of the most enjoyable video's I have ever watched on UA-cam. Thanks. Awesome riding man. Keep it up.
Genius editor and let's not forget how talented the camera operator is here - maybe the same person?. And how many reclimbs for retakes did our poor Blake-man. Bravo, stay in shape guys!!
Dialog and the blake on blake convos were super solid and amusing. great vid.
Amazing photography, serious props to whoever was behind the camera on this one. Thanks for the video.
I live in steep, rocky, gnary Phoenix AZ. I used to have a Hightower and a Ripley, but when I got the Megatower, I was instantly more comfortable and smashing my previous PR's. Haven't looked back since!
Great video Blake, one hell of rider dude.... also, props go to who ever did the editing.... absolutely spot on..... well done
Good bit of entertainment and why I subscribed.... I have previously fallen victim of buying more bike then I needed for my local trails.
Just love the alter ego’s. Must be difficult and a blast to record and edit. Brilliant way to show the differences. Still none closer to helping me choose - trail vs enduro. Although at present it’s take what you get.
Wow! This video inspired me to go out on my trail bike. Unfortunately my shock is getting its annual service right now... too bad...
Great video!
is this the first time we see commencal bikes on the channel ?
They had those kids bikes last year but apart from that I think this is!
It’s about time. Highly underrated bikes
I personally have ever used one but they look great!
@@MrDhesse apparently the seat stays rub on your ankles though😬
@@frankiemazzei8882 my friend has one it’s all on how you put your feet on your pedals he doesn’t rub but that’s no reason for you not to get one they are awesome.
Great editing and great analysis. Thank you for the hard work. You made it entertaining and informative. 👍
That double thing is so well done. Totally convincing! Well done!
The timing on this video is amazing, well done.
I love these Split-Screen series...and Blake is so likeable and does a real good job presenting these...very entertaining...thanks for that...!
2 thoughts about the video.
1. would love to see both bikes not only on a fireroad climb but on more tecky, chunky stuff...same on the trail loop
2. Best of both worlds was and will ever be the AM bike at around 150mm in the front and 140/135mm in the back....
I pulled the trigger on the Meta SX, so basically an AM with a smaller wheel and a longer chainstay, both have the same wheelbase, best of both worlds and perfect for big jumps and steep trails, I couldnt be happier 😄😄😄🤩🤩🤩🤩
Another great video that should get a youtube-Oscar for greatest Camera, editing and creativity! The topics you bring sometimes are a bit repetitive, but still great informations served with a lot of passion and humour for days!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Nice camera work! Love those stabilised gopro shots, adds dynamics to the scene, fun to watch, like from me.
I think the biggest difference is the confidence you gain with increased suspension travel and slacker geometry.
That clash is so nice! Almost sad that I got the Meta AM 29, but its too good to regret.
3 Blake’s, brilliantly put together & great to watch
Love my Meta TR 29 - it is a real climber, sails through the muddy root filled trails (fell over one yesterday, but pushed over the impossible thing the second time through), and scares the heck out of me as I fly downhill!!! What a blast!!!
how does it perform in the bikepark?
@@technotaubsi Performs good, you could bring one to Whistler and shred the black diamonds.
Don’t know how you managed all of the video magic, but it sure was enjoyable to watch.. Great channel!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic stuff! This is your most creative and well put together vid yet. And I'm with Enduro Blake ;)
Wow ! The 3 blackes seems like a lot of hard work to get it working in editing ! Awesome video !
This video must have been an incredible project to make. It's really enjoyable
Great info. Production and camera work were outstanding, too!
I've had the Clash since the summer and I love it!
So looking forward to my TR29...my Meta 55 2009 has had its day
My brother has the TR, i have the AM… we’re still trying to find the difference. Pros will probably be able to feel the minute differences… as daily morning riders both of us… they’re both fantastic weapons to pack, no matter the ride choice.
I saved up money from my 14th birthday in September and I’m getting a enduro bike for Christmas, gx 1x12, guide re brakes, rock shox lyric 170mm and a super deluxe air. Can’t wait
Barelli said it himself that the Meta AM 29 is an out and out race bike for limited few folks vs. the TR which he recommended for the vast majority of people ripping their local trails and participating in races here and there. That Meta TR is both longer and slacker with a steeper seat tube than my size large Megatower. It has slightly less travel. That "trail" bike is an absolute weapon!
Very nice concept, funny video ! The chosen trail bike is more on the enduro side. I wonder what would have been the time difference with a smaller trail bike (ex: fox 34, float DPS).
Congratulations on new sponsors! Great to see you guys equipped with Commencal and Maxxis, and really hoping that we will be seeing more of that Clash beast :)
Commencal meta I my favorite bike ! I’m Glad gmbn got to ride them in this video. I have the 2020 model in red.
so much fun... love it!
blake(s)... you are my hero(s)
Some great videography in this video. Great job!
The TA looks like a science guy. Well, when it comes to cycling, he is indeed. Top man really. This video deserves an award! Cheers mate. Stay safe. LIKE
I always see all of ya riding such beautiful trails and cry inside, because the most similar thing here is a kind of pump track but it's 1'5min at max. Almost everything I can do is XC, and I believe I'd enjoy enduro more
Nice, these are the two bikes I've been dreaming about
when blake was doing the downhill race did anyone think back to the narrow bars video and him almost dying
😂 Check it out here if you haven't seen it! gmbn.eu/NarrowBars
Editing masterpiece. Enjoyed it!
What a master on making content Blake Samson!
I got a 2019 clash, love it! altho the climbing with it hurts sometimes xd
That blue Meta is gorgeous!!!
Just purchased a clash, CANT WAIT!!
1. Impressive how much fun to watch you can make a commercial, which is basically what this was. A better title may have been "Which Commencal bike is best for you?"
2. Truly well done. Looked forward to this video all week, and it didn't disappoint, for entertainment anyway, with a little helpful info.
3. Doddy's comment about trail bikes....some of them leaning toward the XC geometry and some leaning toward the Enduro...was spot on. Surprised it wasn't mentioned that the Meta leans toward the Enduro, big time, with extremely different geometry than my '18 Trek Fuel EX (also a trail bike) which has a much steeper head angle. This is probably why the Enduro bike only beat the Trail bike by 3 seconds on the downhill. Interesting to me how much their Trail bike beat their Enduro bike on the 50 minute segment dubbed the "Trail" section. This leads me to #4
4. Trail bike is definitely the one for me, as it's the better all-rounder, and in my area, trail is about the best one can hope for as most trails are XC green trails, blue at best. Trail also works for when you go a little farther away to ride bigger stuff on occasion.
5. A more helpful and interesting video I'd like to see made is a comparison between a couple Enduro-leaning trail bikes and a couple XC-learning trail bikes from multiple popular brands/top contenders - including brick and mortar big brands like Specialized and Trek, and the top direct sales models. Then again, I would anticipate results would be about the same. The Enduro leaning trail bikes like this META would be best on big tech, chunk, downhill and big jumps, with their more relaxed geometry and beefier suspension, and XC oriented trail bikes would be faster on climbs and most 'trail' sections with moderate obstacles that reward peddling efficiency.
Not surprised the times between these two bikes were so similar; after all that Trail bike has the most enduro geometry I've ever seen on a trail/all-mountain bike (there is less than 1° difference between the headtube and seat tube angles, whereas most trail bikes have a 65-67° headtube angle). Not to mention the Fox 36 was considered an enduro fork until the 38 came out this year.
And only 5mm less in reach, the bikes are basically the same apart form the travel
I don't think they really timed these ;)
Awesome video Blake and editors! well made 🍻👍😎
Lets say thanks to the editors for this masterpiece
More bikes like the clash please, so dope.
The Commencal META is a great bike. I got the META TR just before winter and had a chance to use it a bit. I'm in love, it's a nice and fun bike for sure. Even the TR feels great going downhill, much better than you common trail bike. In fact it is defined as "mini enduro" and I think it makes perfect sense.
Oh and for the folks at Commencal: I totally got this bike because of the overwhelming positive comments made on it on the GMBN tech show back when the bike was announced. So glad to see it on GMBN now.
Kudos to you all..especially the editors...great video....
Enduke, Traingel and Trake. Good video guys.
Oh and you too Blake.
U guys should do one of these but enduro hardtail vs enduro fs
There is no such think as an enduro hardtail. Max fork travel on hardtails is 150mm IMO. They will always be in the trail bike category no matter how HARDCORE U MAKE THEM 😂
@@antoanangelov5672 Don't kill their dreams, hardcore hardtails can be whatever they want to be 😂
Love Commencal Bikes, for far the best bike I ever ride.
Commencal Meta + Blake= AWESOME VIDEO
That Clash... a ROCKET!!!
Love for you guys to review the new 2021 Stumpjumper Alloy...👍
I wonder how much the time was affected by the slower rolling/heavier front Assegai on the Enduro. Tires make a big difference in speed.
Would love to see Blake ride a meta ht. Aggressive geo, loves to goof off and have fun, but loves speed as well. Mine has been heavily upgraded since I got it, but it is money well spent :)
Really really well done video.
Content
And editing
This editing is next level
The meta am 29 has been on my radar for the last 6 months. I want one so bad.
Nicely done!! Congrats
Man I remember you guys hitting 1mil, well done
Great editing, loved it
appreciate the free content, awesome video guys!
Our pleasure!
That Meta TR is slacker than most dedicated Enduro bikes were only 2-3 years ago!
It's a downhill weapon
The edit job on this one was amazing hahaha
Great quality content, thanks guys
I like trail bikes cuz they kind of can do anything with relative ease
Been waiting for a commencal on the channel for ages.
More commencal riding please! I d like to see game of bike with these beasts!
Cool vid I was debating between a trail and enduro for a full squish option.
Not just kudos to the editors, but more to the pre production, scripting and direction. Planning all this would do my head in.
Sick video Blake. Many kudos
I think the take out from this is that 99% of people don't need an enduro bike. Great video; keep up the good work guys.
I love blake so much, This kind of blakes video is so sick when he tries to point between the others at the same time..
This video is great! Confirms what I was already thinking
Glad to hear it!
Great comparison guys! Also which size did you picked for both the TR and the AM? Actually I own the Öhlins ED in size L for my 180cm tall. So given the extreme reach on these beasts, I'm really curious about this factor as it's a big topic these days. Thanks for your answer and awesome job anyway 🤟🤟
i mean... the editing of the video is crazy good
Love how the both of them cover their brakes on the climb
What size were these bikes please, and how tall are you Blake(s)? Great comparison and great video!
Like how they added in the strange baby that came from the trail, enduro and downhill bike
Really nice .... blake vs blake is simply classic
Great job Blake, so funny I really liked it.
Ayyyy I recognize that backing track from the Tuxedo Time podcast 🙂
