Your paining is just insane mate. Incredibly impressive technique and wonderful colour choices. It's all I can do to get a colour for the eye lenses, I'd never dream of attempting multiple highlights and details for them. I am a lore nerd, and I like your idea for an unofficial robin hood like chapter. I particularly like the idea of small team or solo operator intervention missions. It feels like you should be playing a lot of Killteam with them. I think there are a couple of questions that your lore raises, that need some thought, and since you asked for ideas to flesh them out I would like to posit some ways to fill these gaps. Their need to beg/steal/scavenge equipment, and the relative lack of personnel and particularly of more significant hardware is one thing, but the question remains of how they have recruited new space marines over the last 10 000 years, with all of the genetic engineering and enhancement that this recruitment entails. Even more difficult to explain is how they have come by Primaris marines. These new space marines were developed in secret at the heart of the imperium on behalf of the official chapters, and distributed to them under the new imperial governance of big Robute G. How would the Spectral Wolves have received any Primaris recruits, and the technology to develop more? My suggestion would be to flesh out the originator of the chapter, the individual or group who pulled the strings to create the chapter, and who direct it's efforts in service of humanity. This organisation would need to be quite high up in the imperium, to be able to organise and support a space marine chapter outside of normal channels. The most obvious candidates would be a cabal of inquisitors, perhaps forming an unofficial Ordo (The Ordo Humanis?) and maintaining the Spectral Wolves as their Chamber Militant. On the other hand, if the Inquisition is too obvious a candidate, there are other powerful groups that might be behind them. Maybe a particularly benevolent High Lord of terra and their descendants, or even a noble family in service to a High Lord who can quietly alter the records and make the odd edict 'on their behalf'. Perhaps a Sector or Segmentum governer. Whomever it was would be surreptitiously altering the official records so the Spectral Wolves appear to be just one of the hundreds of chapters on the books, albeit one with limited record of their activities, and limited resource support to keep them from significant scrutiny, but a chapter that would be on the list to receive at least the minimum resources needed to persist, and a contingent of Primaris as well once the Ultima founding came along. Another major question is how they get around. Deploying even small teams or solo operators to planets across the imperium, or even across just a small part of it would require a significant fleet of ships. Where most chapter's fleets are centred around a Battle Barge, or a few of them, the nature of the Spectral Wolves would suggest to me that they lack any ship so large, and maybe maintain a Strike cruiser or two at most as their base of operations, and mostly use a wide array of escort sized frigates and rapid strike vessels to deliver their intervention teams across the galaxy. Finally there is the question of the ancestry of their gene-seed. I like that they use wolves imagery without being descended from the Space Wolves. It makes sense that this symbol would be chosen independently by several groups. After all the Lunar Wolves (later renamed Sons of Horus) were another of the original legions, as distinct from the Space Wolves as any other. One option would be to say the Spectral Wolves secretly come from the Lunar Wolves, from the few of them that did not follow Horus into heresy, and reclaimed the Wolf identity when it became clear that association with Horus was a bad idea, and who would have been desperate for a benefactor who would allow them to continue to serve the people of humanity, even if their connection to the arch traitor would have left them somewhat sceptical of the institution of the imperium. I think that idea fits really well, but secretive chapters of loyalist holdouts from traitor legions has been done before, so I think I prefer the most basic take instead: that the Spectral Wolves are, like the majority of chapters, taken from Ultramarine gene-seed, and it is their circumstances and operations that makes the interesting and distinct, not their heritage. I hope you don't mind this small essay, and I hope it gives you some ideas. Such an incredible looking army deserves a well thought out place in the lore of the world. Should you have any questions about the setting or how else they might fit into it, please don't hesitate to ask.
This is amazing mate! Thanks so much for taking the time to write this. I do like your idea about a cabal of inquisitors “funding” them in secret. I hadn’t really considered that. I was always aware of the glaring Primaris issue so this would help to explain that.
@@rgbminiatures My pleasure. I think it's very 40k for the alleviation of human suffering to be a petty concern in the grand scheme of things, worth only of a minor inquisitorial Ordo. I wonder if the Inquisitors are truly altruistic, or if is a means to and end for them, and the appeal to humanity is a way of manipulating their underlings and their pet space marine chapter. Probably a bit of both depending on the specific inquisitor. I don't know if you are familiar, but it is traditional for each Ordo to maintain a military arm, or 'chamber militant', which is often an especially secret space marine chapter, so it fits really well. Are you planning to expand your collection of spectral wolves very much? I'm interested to see how the other company's livery and colours differ from the second company.
Right, firstly I have to put down my exact reaction to this scheme 'fleshshade!, ballsy'. I was a commission painter for a few years and have done death wing projects in three different paint ranges from citadel, this is not one of them but is exactly how I did the bone half of my own angels of redemption so I know exactly how this goes, again I have to commend your execution it's gorgeous. For anyone wondering, rakharth flesh over black is approximately 7 layers for a solid coat so can be difficult by brush, I too resorted to an airbrush for the bulk of the army. You don't need an expensive one either as it's base coating, it will easily pay itself off against time investment. Again a great video, well done.
