Without watching this video i would have spent $250-$300 thanks for sharing this. All it cost me is about less than $25 went to Frys to buy the tools and battery where he posted to buy. And it works. Honestly i never touch this all tools before but this video helps me a lot. I save this video Thanks :)
Following your video I just replaced both batteries in my mini 2007. Easy job once I managed to open the keys. Thanks for your help. A successful project.
We had the same problem. Battery in the old mini key was dead. So i bought a battery on ebay, unsolderded the old one and put in the new one same as you and it just works like a charm :) TOP thanks from BELGIUM ;)
My coopz 2008 key went dead and went to the dealer and will cost me $250 for the whole new one. Cant afford and its been almost a year now. Thanks for sharing this hopefully I can find the battery and see if I can fix it. Thanks. This is great video.
R VideoKo for sure you will find the battery. In my video it's the eBay page where u can get it ;) thx for the comment and let me know if you need help!
Karp's Korner i got it fix and at first I thought i mess it up and I didn’t realize that I still have to set or reset the code after a month of waiting lol. If not for your video I would have done it. I just follows everything in the video. Thanks.
Thank you very much . Very helpful video. I just received the soldering kit . I did exactly as you said. And guess what. It worked bro. I’ve saved a lot of money. I really appreciate it man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much for this video! Super helpful to see this process from start to finish-- and thank you for naming the battery type! Panasonic VL2020. Finding 90º VL2020s in the American online marketplaces is near impossible; I opted to go for the more readily available Panasonic ML2020, which from what I've seen thus far appears to be a slightly higher capacity version of the same battery. They're also cheaper!
Thank you for this video. I've never soldered before so I'm worried about that bit, but I'm going to give this a try. Worse thing that can happen is it doesn't work and I still can't use the remote. Will update after I try.
Actually! I have a 2005 Mini Cooper R52 Convertible and the keyfob self chargers. I took it apart and realized that the “contact” inside became lose, so 99% if you think you lost batt charge in you key fob? Most likely you didn’t! Check it out. I had my Tech solder back on and walla it works👏👏👏👍👍
@@KarpsKornerHANDYFISH Open the fob up carefully and look inside into the area where when you press the center button of your fob connects where the there like an L contact that the solder may have come loose to the bottom of it. All you need it’s to take it to someone like a tech that knows how to solder? And that should be it. Mini key-fobs are charged as you drive! (it’s hard to explain the solder part!) just open your key fob and push on that area where the exterior button pushes up and down and make that area is soldered! Be careful cause the big chip inside does come lose, just remember how you take it out! Good luck.
Hey man, do you know if the battery is actually rechargeable? Because I do not see anywhere on the circuit board where the key makes contact with the board to actually charge the battery itself. How does the key recharge the battery? Can I buy a battery that is actually already charged? Also, can you provide a link to the battery you ordered, I am finding the right battery, but it has the wrong connector tabs on it. Thanks for your help!
Nik Martin the battery is rechargeable, charges when the key is in the contact. Not ok to put non rechargeable battery in my opinion. I will get back to you with the eBay user for the battery.
It's a solder sucker. Once you melt the existing solder, you suck it off the board/contacts with that thing. Much easier than wicking with the braded copper strand.
This saved me getting a new key although I found the cheap replacement keys off ebay have internals that exactly matched the internal size of the original key so rather than soldering in a new battery I just changed the internals (I found syncing they internals to my car with 4 key turns nearly on then hold unlock button then lock button 3 times worked for me). The price difference between the battery and a cheap chinese replica key was not much.
I solved the problem - the key has to be REinitialized....put in the key to the socket, turn it in Pos1 and Off again. Put the key out, press & hold the OpenButton while pressing the ClosingButton 3times. The Door mechanism will confirm the initializing & systwm now works ;-)
Just stop. DO NOT OPEN YOUR KEY WITH A STANLEY KNIFE! You will very likely cut your hands and slice off tiny components off of your circuit board rendering your key useless. Notice how Karp doesn't even show the key being cut open. If you must do this yourself please go in carefully from the top with a tiny screwdriver and go down the sides of the shell where it's sealed, perpendicular to the body of the key if you will. If you go down one side they will usually just pop open at that point. I do MINI key repair on the side and have seen many keys come through having been damaged while being cut open. Some can be repaired, some can't. You have been cautioned.
I just got a Mini Cooper 2005 and my key-fob is okay so far, however after seeing this video I can’t believe how stupid BMW is for making it so hard to replace the battery in their Mini Cooper key fob.🤬🤬😡😡Ot really p’os me. To me it’s another way that Mini and BMW rips people off, cause for the dealer to do this according to this guy it costs like $180.😡🤬
It's exactly how I feel brother! And the price they've asked me to get a new key was 200$ here in Montreal. Hope you pressed the subscribe button ;) Cheers

Thank you, I'll look into that next time.

Great got my key didn't even know the battery
I thought it was a normal battery I was try to get out the small frame lol worst is if u have got a soldering iron lucky I had 1

Hi, do you need to re-program the new replacement of the internals with your car? if so, how to do that? Thanks.
could you put a link where you got that battery? I can't find it anywhere. thanks

ebay, it's in the video

Looks like you could bend those tabs over to secure it.
Car will cycle the locks after several attempts are recoding it but the fob doesn't work afterwards. I don't know what's wrong with this car.
Did u replaced the battery? If yes maybe need to reprogram somehow the battery. I'll look into it
@@KarpsKornerHANDYFISH this is after replacing the battery. The locks will cycle but nothing else. I've already replaced the rear view mirror.
Broken button?
@@KarpsKornerHANDYFISH That's my next thought, I ordered a blank off ebay and will replace the board

we have to do the same. After replacement the key didnt work. Maybe it has to charge some time!? Or is there a procedere - key lost codes ect?

A lot of the design in the mini is pretty poor, like the stamped steel hood release cable bracket, the buried thermostat, the timing chain setup.
Nvm I googled it it’s a pump
What? 😬
Didn’t work for me...followed instructions exactly. Anyone else have problems?
Soldering ok? All circuits looked ok? Good battery?
As far as I can tell everything looked good...it was a brand new battery though I did not check to see if it was working.
Open it again brother, measure battery.
Did you recharge the battery as it may be flat from storage?
Are kidding me? is cheaper to change the car!!
That is correct lol. But not when u talk of the batty.
Way too long, just show how in 2 minutes, do some editing.
Yes, I understand it can be edited but now it's a bit too late. Thanks for the advice. Did u replaced the battery?
Quite possibly the worse design ever!!
