Is Wellingborough Market now lost?

- On the 4th December 2023, the last of the Wellingborough Market place stalls will be removed. What happens next for our Market? and myself alongside many other residents don't believe that the removal of these stalls is completely down to anti-social behaviour.

The market was buzzing on a Saturday morning, in the late 80's into the 90's

Was a fantastic market in the 70s my mum had a stall selling kitchen ware back then but lets face it Markets are finished as is the town centre .

I remember it being cram packed in the late 70's and early 80's it was absolutely fantastic but now its a big shambles just like the councils multi storey carpark wtf are the council up to ....fantastic video well done purple and stay safe..👍👍👍

Wellingborough market was the heart of the town when I was younger. There were hundreds of stalls and you struggled to move around them with the thousands of shoppers. It took up all of the available space from Fine Fare to the church

Cheers Purple, sad times buddy but not entirely unforeseen, free market economics with International debt finance. The people voted for this and now live with the consequences. All the best.

remember when the corn market became Fine Fare Supermarket. the market was huge in those days nearly behind all of market street, where the library is
Used to stand on Wellingborough market for a few years, its demise is down to several factors, change in shopping habits, lack of support and Council in fighting, one department not working with others. The real start of the decline was losing the stalls by the bank, which helped direct shoppers up to the main market.
Once they were gone, some of the traders on the main part of the market used to finish at anytime, some as early as 3.30pm on Saturdays. Little point wondering why takings are poor when many obstructed stalls staying until 5pm, losing them money.
The biggest problem is cost, internet shopping is often cheaper, the councils, not just Wellingborough see markets as a money loser, not a decent revenue stream, and as such do nothing to promote the markets for most of the year.
If Northamptons market alterations are anything to go by, most of the existing traders will go elsewhere, even traders need to eat.
Sad to say mate but markets have had their day. I’m from Nottingham and we used to have some fantastic markets but sadly they have nearly all gone as most people now days get things cheaper off the internet. I hope they don’t get rid of your historical market but I can see them making it a bigger car park. Good luck and I hope you all get a campaign up to save it 😢
Houses/flats more like as there are plenty of free parking spaces empty in Wellingborough as there are fewer and fewer shops.
I have seen Melton Mowbray market. Markets are wanted if they are given a chance. What really doesn't help is big chain stores. They have ruined our high streets and markets. Now these big chains are online it's a disaster in this real world. Thanks for your thoughts

The anti-social behaviour (presumably drug and drink related) is probably down to a dozen, persistent individuals. It would be far cheaper and more effective to issue exclusion notices to these nuisances than to commit the tens of thousands in funding required to return to temporary stalls.

I remember when I lived in Wellingborough the traffic wardens would give you a ticket for parking anywhere near the market if you shouldn’t be there, now looks like a free for all.
North Northants will soon be ruined if the council get their way. Kettering is a shambles, now Wellingborough is going the same way (fingers crossed it doesn’t end like Kettering)
Well I'm afraid to say it but the majority of NNC councilors are from Kettering. If Kettering don't stand a chance then what hope do we Wellingburians have.
I remember Wellingborough market being so busy, library too. Kettering is ruined indeed, apart from the butchers there's little to bother with. Once Woolworths went and the parking charges became prohibitive it was all downhill from there. Charity shops and a few stalls on the pedestrian area as a feeble nod to a "market". A worn out swimming pool, what fun. Rushden Lakes have the shops and free parking. It's almost like town councils enjoy grinding everything to dust and extracting as much money as possible from the citizens as an extra kick in the teeth. Sad...

Kettering Market, has been ruined, Northampton too, Wellingborough next. All this talk about Markets being dead is rubbish, we went to Stamford last Friday (Market Day) about 100 stalls only a few selling 'tat', car parks were rammed, the joy on people's faces, the banter, it felt really great. Oakham on a Saturday, although smaller has a great vibe to it too. Councillors want to leave something to be remembered by, be it positive or negative to them it doesn't matter, they probably don't live in the area or use the facilities anyway!
It's a shame to see it all unfold Clive. There must be some sort of resolution to it all.
They ruined Kettering Market and now they're going to ruin Wellingborough Market 😢 Do they not teach Business Studies in the sixth forms in Wellingborough or at the College?! Why are students not running a business making/selling things on the market at the weekend??

Hi purple 😊I remember wellingboroughs bustling market when I moved up here from Bedfordshire 40 yrs ago 🤔unfortunately over the years supermarkets and online shopping have undercut the prices of market sellers who were there through all weathers.todays buyers want to stay in the warmth of their homes and get free delivery. Markets only stand a chance at xmas time.becareful seeing a lorry in,if it hits something it becomes your fault😱

Peterborough old market ,now stand 10 story apartment blocks. used to around 100 stalls over last decade went down as council run the site down .funny that hey ,if they knew or had plan hmm wink wink

No, not entirely. Something needed to be done to stop ASB. Drug users and drinkers openly using this space. Also the whole area needs levelling. It's got worse since shoppers have started illegally parking there.
Woah hang on there my dearest Viv. Our police can't police the area can they not? In my honest opinion I can't believe the excuse they have thrown out to us. They can't put it down to ASB without explaining what truly has happened to our market. If you talk with those who ran stalls in the 90s and 00s they will tell you what has really happened. One thing we can agree on is the whole town needs a level up strategy.
@PurpleVision23 . The photograph boards are staying and moving to the walls. As I said they're repairing the surface and installing bollards to stop the parking. They've not said the market is going...yet! Wellingborough has a market charter going back centuries
