    I always wanted to try flying my speed wing paraglider with a paramotor. I used the electric SP140 paramotor from openppg. and was pulling 12kw pretty consistently so I would imagine this isn't ideal and possibly a gas powered paramotor would work better for this application?
    thanks for watching!

    That little wing HAULS! Power hungry, too - holy crapper! 12,000W!! That's some serious juice! Glad you didn't cross your tips on landing, lol - that would've sucked! 😁 We just had the coldest temps ever out here in MA. Was -13.4° with a -26° wind chill at one point! I couldn't keep my leaky house above 64°, even with that massive coal boiler I just put in. It was CRAZY! Windows were all ice, too. The little river in my back yard froze enough that I could walk on it in just 8 hour flat! That wind was BRUTAL. 🥶 And today it was 45°, lol! Gotta love New England!

      My electric bike has about 1/3rd of normal power when it is less then 12c+ outside... And in minus degrees it gets even worse, it is ok if you go right away with hot batteries and keep using battery power but stop for a few min and the batteries get cold and have no power and you have to pedal like crazy to go against wind or up a hill because there is no power...

    My go-to lately has been a 14m miniwing on my sp140. The battery can handle peak power (20+ kW) for a minute or two. I try to keep it under 15 kW constant. Manufacturer recommends keeping it under 10 kW constant to help the life of the battery.

    I wonder if a prop with a higher speed will perform better. Because now you needed to have the RPM above the designed range of the prop probably. The speed you need to maintain airborne is a lot higher of course than with the normal wing.

    • @JRSkola
      @JRSkola Рік тому

      I think that applies to gas engines, but is there a significant impact for an electric motor? Feels like the RPM range differential from 'designed' probably wouldn't be that much of a difference for the electric. Bah! I need more learning!

    • @basgoossen
      @basgoossen Рік тому

      @@JRSkola an electric engine has a specific value called Kv or the rpm per volt. This value indicates the speed at which the motor wants to run at a specific voltage. This wil also influence and define max torque at a specific speed. If your airspeed is very fast the motor just doesn't want to run any faster and is giving only very little torque. A higher speed prop will fix this issue.

    • @JRSkola
      @JRSkola Рік тому

      @@basgoossen I think I follow -- but do you think the rpm of the prop is appreciably different between a speed wing, and a regular wing. My guess is that the delta between those two RPMs wouldn't be practically different.

    • @basgoossen
      @basgoossen Рік тому

      Well i'm not an expert with regards to those bigger motors, but i do have quite a bit of experience with smaller brushless engines on model aircraft and speed drones. To my knowledge the RPM of the propeller is quite proportional to the airspeed. And i'd figure the airspeed of a stable flying speedwing is much higher than that of a stable flying normal paramotor wing. My guess is that to generate enough lift on the speedwing you might even need to go 1.5 to twice as fast as with a standard wing but that is purely an assumption based on size and wingprofile. So hence the prop speed will also be proportionaly higher. But again i'm no expert and i do not have experience with flying craft of this size and weight.

    • @JRSkola
      @JRSkola Рік тому

      @@basgoossen I think it would be a fascinating chart to see a composite of airspeed vs rpm, motor torque, and power draw. As you're alluding to, perhaps a 'constant speed prop' much like Miro from Scout has created could eeek out a few more minutes of flight time from a battery system.

    You're flying deep in the brakes close to stall. Turn by leaning, not by using brakes and you'll lose less altitude. A Firefly isn't a speedwing, it's a miniwing. That gopro mount on your ppg is going to get you hurt or killed. Lines can easily be caught on it. Separated cage too.... so much lol

    Do you keep the batteries hot before takoff? My experience with Electric Bike is that I get about 1/3 rd of the normal power as soon as the temperature outside is less then 12c+ if the batteries just stay in the cold for a few minutes before I go with the bike... As long as you use power they manage to keep warm if they was already warm but stop only for 5 min and all that power is gone for rest of the day....

    • @JonasMarcinko
      @JonasMarcinko  Рік тому +3

      Yes I do keep them warm inside before I go out.
      And you are exactly right that the batteries will maintain temp if used. The multiple bad launches didn’t help that situation though.

  • @Adirondacks4me

    You do know under load vs no load are entirely different right. Your 51% was not really how much power you had left, coasting slowly would have been a more accurate reading pulling way less amps. You need to find the sweet spot of average draw to battery life...

    Continuing to attempt to fly with a clearly separated cage is reckless. You can't say you didn't notice it, because that was right near where the go pro was hanging up. The risk is not worth the reward.
