  • Like so many great adventure stories, this one started in a pub, with a conversation between the Royal Naval Sailing Association and the head of the Whitbread Brewery. 🍻
Within a year or so, 17 crews were on the start line off Portsmouth, UK, for the first Whitbread Round the World Race in September 1973. 🌎⛵️
From that was born one of the greatest sporting events in the world. Check out the story of the first edition of what we now know as The Ocean Race. 🎥🎞
For the first time, we present this film in a new restored version.

when I was a young kid this was so exiting to watch. I sailed an Optimist dinghy, dreaming of this.

I think it was more of an adventure back then. Today’s races seems more like athletic sports games.

The spirit of adventure, and the 'have a go' attitude... if you had the funds, there was no barrier to entry and, as the crew of Siyula II demonstrated, underdogs could triumph against ocean sailing greats...

For the sake of historical accuracy, may I add a "minor" correction to the description. The idea for the race actually came from the yachting journalist Anthony Churchill who raised the idea in Yachting World in January 1971. I well remember the article which I consumed after a few pints of Guinness! It raised a great deal of interest and a significant number of prospective entries. The only trouble was that no organisation seem to follow the idea. So the RNSA rode to the rescue. It may have been at that point that they had a beer in a pub with Whitbread. Without the organisation of the RNSA and the sponsorship of Whitbread, the idea may well have died there and then. My credentials? I was involved in the race from January 1971 and participated in it. Epic!

How was it filmed back then? The picture is so stable. Quick Google showed camera stabilizers weren't used until 1976.

    From pub conversation, circumnavigations
No, we didn’t start the Whitbread
For thirteen editions, they’ve been on a mission...
