When I watched this it amazes me that I was 35 years old in 1989-90. and what astonished me was the coverage of Maiden. If I had any doubt that women and men have come a long ways in my 68 years, I don't. If you know the full on story what a major accomplishment was achieved by Maiden in that race then you'll understand my meaning
A great race, but it's unfortunate that we moved away from film for this edition. More convenient, for sure, the videotape camera footage has not aged gracefully, however.... It is a similar story across all sports in the 80s and 90s.
Producer: “Alright, Jimmy, I’ve been looking at your script here. You have a Soviet boat with an American skipper during the Cold War and they end up being at sea when the Berlin Wall falls. Every team is all guys except the one that’s all girls, who wear swimsuits. Okay, then there’s your hero captain, Peter Blake, kudos for not just making him American but are you sure the average Joe Schmoe is gonna know where New Zealand is? You said he has 70s hair even though this story takes place in the late 80s, he has an emotional moment scattering his friend’s ashes at Cape Horn, he’s been in every edition previously, his biggest rival is coincidentally from the same country and their race into their home port there is super tight, he wins flawlessly even though that has never happened before... Jimmy, this is just too unrealistic!” Screenwriter: “But it really happened!”
The extended version, which has some of the commentary by Peter Montgomery has none of this it seems. Indeed, it shows a crowd waiting to greet them in NZ at 1am. ua-cam.com/video/HdsZ_1C0yQo/v-deo.html As for any period of time, some individuals were bigoted, but certainly not everyone.
@@DoubleMonoLR ... I hear you. The context for me is having two teen daughters. Not just the dodgy bits of commentary but to signpost to my girls we HAVE come a long way. Lots of doom and gloom today about the state of the world but we are a lot more inclusive and tolerant than we were in the 80s

Erm . . . I think we might be missing something here, chaps. Like the rest of the race? To say nothing of the result. It is naughty to advertise this as the 'official film' while including only two-thirds of the race.
Found a news article, "The Fazisi raced for Punta del Este, Uruguay, without a sea trial in which to iron out equipment imperfections and staffed by a crew with little experience in large-scale yacht racing. Once there, the skipper, Aleksei Grishenko, snapped under the pressure of representing the Soviet Union in a risky, resourceless venture, his colleagues said, and hanged himself from a tree."

From the vintage soundtrack music to the big, heavy and dangerous maxis….welcome back to my early sailing days😂
Two of my favourite sailors, Olsen and Blake
This so interesting to see. My father was on Martela
in an age of imoca, vo65 and vo 70 im honestly surprised to see how good sailing was back then!
Yep, the racing Sloop's and Cutter's really nice compared to these days.
The Steinlager II was a real monster of a yacht!
When boats looked like boats! ✌️
6:09 This is no race for wimps! Most people with an injury like that would want to be airlifted to a hospital, not stay on board and go on sailing!

AYE CARUMBA that dudes hand injury.....ouch
The surface carved by a her must have given ready the legs they knew.
Err, nice, but what about the last leg and a run down of the results?
Hi, we've uploaded the extended version here ua-cam.com/video/HdsZ_1C0yQo/v-deo.html ⛵️🌍
That wound 😟😟😟
Magnus Olsson went on to be the oldest skipper in the history of the race at the helm of Ericsson 3!
I want to get a Maiden shirt for my sister for Christmas. Anyone know where to find it? Thank you.
The end?

Surely the movie rights are out there for this year? Totally could be a movie

Zoe Paula Strassfield HA
There actually is a movie out about the ship with an all female crew! I'm pretty sure the movie is called Maiden.
The narrators comments about Maiden are pretty patronising. We've come a long way.
Very patronizing.
@Jesus H Christ wow. Your first comment in 4 years. You came down from the mountain for this...?

Why is nobody asking about the Russian who hung himself?!
I am so confused by this too.
