Zal was raised not by his father, who feared his amazing white hair, but by the terrifying creature Simorgh--becoming a man of the mountains in the process. When his father decided to accept him back into society, his muscular frame caught the eye of the princess Rudabeh--but would he be able to gain favor for his wits?

To the Persian king Sam (yes, really) was born a son named Zal--whose only negative trait was his white hair, which apparently horrified the king enough to cast him out to the mountains. No worries--Zal was going turn out fine. And we mean, *really fine.*

The character dynamics in here are really interesting. Sam makes a mistake and begs forgiveness, which he gets. Zal gives Rudabeh's servants jewels and a message, and the servants don't immediately scheme to undercut her somehow. He also passes his tests with no divine help, and Rudabeh's disapproving father doesn't back out of the deal. I get the feeling that if this were, say, a Greek myth, half the people involved would be dead after a whole bunch of lies and miscommunication.

Now, I cannot confirm with 100% certainty, but I would bet that "Sām" is not pronounced "Sam," and probably pronounced "Sahm," as in a broad /a/ (like in "father"), which sounds a lot "epic mythological sounding" and more "Persian" than "Sam."
What I do know is that in modern Iranian farsi at least, there are two "A-sounds." The sound /ɒ/, which is a kind of O-ish "ah" sound, and the sound /æ/, same as English "short A" in words like "cat." The /ɒ/ sound is written with the letter alif, and when romanized is repented either as ā or â, even aa, which is exactly what we see in سام (sām). Historical farsi I think was similar except it had a long and a short "ah" sound: /a/ vs /a:/ and definitely no /æ/. Thus, I'm pretty damn sure that pronouncing it like the English name "Sam" is markedly wrong.

Rudabeh - is pronounced in the syllables it's written in, Rue-Daw-Beh
Sam - was probably pronounced Saam, given the accent on the A
Zal - same as Sam, probably has the double A sound
Simorgh - This one is a bit tricky, but you guys were close. It's pronounced like See-Mor-g

Historic folklore is Vast, I Love to see how ancient stories bleed through time and make different versions of very old tales. This video is sO fab! I never knew Rapunzel went back so far!

My guess for why Saam was so distraught over his child's hair is that the white color was associated with albinism. That is not something you want to have in a tropical desert, like persia. It was probably also associated with the failing health of old age.
Basically, it was a signal that their son was not destined to have a nice life.
Saam was probably genre aware too.

I'm afraid you have incorrectly told a very key and fundamental aspect of the story. This story from the Persian Shahnameh (Book of Kings) represents how the Iranian (Aryan) people freed themselves from a tyrannical Arab ruler (Zahak) so that the Iranians (not Arabs) can be free from foreign Arab rule. Iran's national epic Poet, Ferdowsi anthropomorphized the older Zoroastrian demon Azi Dahaka from ancient Iranian (Indo-Aryan) mythology in the context of the Iran of his time, fighting off Arab/islamic invaders and tyranny. The defeat of Zahak in the story was not so 'Arab' people can be free but as victory of oppressed Iranians over tyrannical Arab /Muslim rule. To not mention this central context is to utterly twist and misrepresent a thousand years of Iranian national ethos, literature and mythology. Please correct this as soon as possible.

blipboi gilgamesh Kind of. he should have mentioned Jamshid who was the king of Iran. He talked about Zahhak and his father who were rulers of Arabia for a while then suddenly the story shifted to Iran. what happend was that Jamshid was defeated by Zahhak and killed and Zahhak conquered most of Iran.
they made some small mistakes too. Zahhak's name was bivarasp(which literally means 10 thousand horses, referring to his wealth) "Zahhak" became his nickname after he became king and the word comes from Avestan "Azhi Dahak" which means serpent and is cognate with the Persian word for dragon "Ezhdeha"
