    While Loki did cause a LOT of issues in the Norse myths the other gods including Odin and Thor often asked him to solve impossible problems for them that he did NOT cause. And when he inevitably came up with some underhanded solution to fix things the gods never thanked him. Loki was that one supersmart friend who knew everything and loved to remind you how smart he was, but who was also the person you called when your computer stopped running.

  • @ELSTERLING
    @ELSTERLING Рік тому +140

    The murder of Baldr and Loki's relationship to Odinn are extremely intricate. It's theorised that Loki was actually an avatar or aspect of Odinn by many and that he carried out the things Odinn couldn't be seen to be doing. Loki is believed to have been a sort of 'scapegoat' god to take the blame for when things went south. You'll also notice Odinn is the only god he doesn't attempt to roast. In the case of Baldr's murder this meant clearing the way for Odinn to reign until the end of time. In fact the entire tale of Baldr's death is an apologetic for one senior warrior having dictatorial control of society. The whole 'everyone must agree not to kill Baldr' and then 'everyone must weep for Baldr' elements are supposed to demonstrate the impossibility of group consensus and Baldr being killed by such a trivial thing by his blind brother demonstrates their unworthiness to succeed their father. Odinn had his own son assassinated by proxy and it's not the only time he murdered by proxy. Hodr died the exact same way as did king Vikar.

    • @coregoon
      @coregoon Рік тому +11

      No he very much roasts Odin in the tale. He specifically calls him unmanly (sweet irony) for dressing as a woman and doing women's magic.
      As for Baldr's death, there are other (slightly older) versions of it where Loki isn't even involved at all, so I wouldn't read too much into that.

    Main reason to why Loke was imprisoned and given-a-lesson-through-pain for murder of Balder and Höðr. All the other reasons did not matter to them. Since Balder was loved by all in the nine worlds. Höðr was not so widely loved as Balder however was still Balders brother and Friggs son.
    Psst, Loki and Oðinn are blood brothers, which is fitting. For both of them are complex deities, that do both good and bad things. Making Loki the Chaotic Neutral and Oðinn the Lawful Neutral.
    Also Freja is a member of the Vaner tribe and incest was practiced by them while the asar tribe did not. In fact Njord marriage to his sister was annulled by Oden when Njord came to Asgard for that reason.

    What I find most interesting about Loki is, you'll never find places of worship dedicated to him in all of germanic/Scandinavian landscape, yet he plays the role of bringing things in motion in almost every story... Most interesting theory I've heard was that the death of Baldr (the most beloved shiny Boi) was a conspiracy between Loki and Odin (for Odin being the wisest, most knowing god) to keep baldr safe during ragnarök so a new generation of Gods can start all over... Anyway, Loki gets the story started :D

    I have to say, congrats to the E.H. crew for picking the absolute perfect story for this month. I hadn't heard this story about Loki before and given the way he was portrayed in this video, he couldn't be more emblematic of our state- and corporate-backed aristocracy.

    Loki in this story kind of reminds me a bit Daffy Duck when he's paired with Bugs Bunny "That Despicable!", he can be a occasional villain where he can be portrayed as a selfish, mean, attention-stealing braggart, or as a greedy crook who covets fame and riches and who doesn't really care about honesty.
    I hope that loki's "punishment" doesn't apply to poor daffy too (Eh... What's Up Thor?)

    IIRC in some versions of that myth the gods go that far ‘cause an inebriated Loki admits he was the one who not only caused Baldur to die, but also the one who refused to cry for him in order to bring him back to life.

    It seems like Loky was the first most stupid criminal in the world, in modern times he would left his facebook open in Thor's computer... on purpose, I guess the moral is, when you a letting everything out, don't let your own sh out and if you are planning a heist, never fall in love with a cow.

    Apart from the specific things that are wrong, saying "Ragnarök tore the world asunder" is incomplete and misleading. All the Gods, and likely humanity, dies. A lot of the planet is torn apart. But in the end, there are survivors. Survivors who restart the entire cycle of the mythos.

    I must raise objections here. There are a number of very wild takes on this story. Loki's parents are not spoken about in clear terms and the hole giant thing is mostly marvel and not historical.
    In fact giant and gods are not that different so we should be careful spending so much time on this.
    And this entire feast scenario and the murder of Balder comes on a long row of slights against Loki and his family.
    The versions I have read shows a Loki that was not invited to this party in the first place that just crashes it and unleashes a row of alligations and truth bombs against his former allies and gets thrown out. He is later hunted down and gets the punishment from this story.
    So this video is a bit of a let down.
    The real story is about friendships, family and fear of prophesies.
    That would have been way more interesting as a story this this version ended up as and been way more faithful to the source material!

      From what little I know, Loki's father is consistently named the giant Farbauti. His mother varies, but his father was always Farbauti. Which from what I understand is some kind of allegory for lightning strikes creating fire. i.e. Farbauti (lightning) strikes Laufey (leaves) and creates wildfire.

    • @Sienisota
      @Sienisota 9 місяців тому +1

      Loki's father *was* a giant. But the world "giant" doesn't mean a big person in this context. "Giants" were simply diffrent godlike beings, like Aesir and Vanir, except that most giant's seem to be shapeshifters of some sort.
