  • Dik Geurts Ivar wood burning stove models are very well known and highly respected across the stove industry by owners, fitters and dealers alike.
Here at Natural Heating, I have them right up there on a pedestal in terms of how “nice” and slick an air control system they have.
These are a typically Scandinavian (made in the Netherlands) stove model doing what Scandinavian stoves do best..
They stand the test of time, are simple and straightforward in terms of fitting, parts, construction, operation, classical, under stated…. Yet they hit the ball out the park in terms of performance…and the air control system is the smoothest you’ll ever handle.
    Watch and see !
We have the Dike Geurts Ivar 5 (5kw with 5-7kw heat output to the room) and Ivar 8 (7.3kw nominal with 5-10kw to the room) in stock and on display at :

We had the Ivar5 installed last December as our first ever wood burner after 65 years with an open coal fire and we absolutely love it so easy to control and the heat output is tremendous - I would highly recommend anyone looking for a stove then get this one

Really good to have experienced feedback on this family of stoves. What a great place your brother has too.
I have an Ivar 5 in the garage ready to go into the living room where the current stove, recessed into an old sandstone fireplace can really struggle to get the room up to temperature in cold weather. Old Galloway farmhouse challenges.
The firebox size and air control, particularly the long range of adjustment on the control was what sold it to me. It'll be interesting to see how it does with our flue, in our room.
Thank you for making this video!

Great to see this review. I considered one, due to all the positive comments I had heard. Your review has now confirmed it was not for me. Why? A couple of things. In the right situation, it is clearly a winner. But distance to combustibles would be an issue for me, especially at the sides, presumably projecting less heat out the front. Emptying ash would be an issue without an ash pan. Not cheap either, better value elsewhere. Handle visually distracting. So great firebox and efficiency. But not for me. Your review was therefore comforting. Thank you for making the video - there is nothing else on this stove out there as useful.

Emptying ash pan is no problem at all. If burning dry wood about once every 20 fires.Easy . Handle is fine. With mine I would just advise running through a 6" liner if you can to improve draw as I don't think 5" is enough for this stove.

I’ve run them on 5” no problem. I quite like the removable handle - but some people don’t.
Many wood only burners do not have an Ashpan and you simply burn on a bed of ash on the base. It comes with its own ash removal tool.
Whole point in my videos is so you can work out what suits you and what doesn’t. One unit won’t be perfect for everyone. It’s much like finding a partner !
However, these are a damn good stove. Maybe have a look at the Heta Ambition in my other videos. Better ash retention - still no Ashpan… but a fixed handle
Good luck finding your match. Honestly, viewing stoves in the flesh is recommended

Hi - thanks for these really good detailed reviews. They’re super informative.
I’m thinking about getting a stove and from your videos it looks like this or the Heta Inspire 45 would be ideal.
Do you have a preference between the two? I haven’t had a log burner before so control/ ease of use is a focus, although they both look easy. The DG Ivar 5 air control looks unbelievably good!

they are both amazingly good stoves. I'd encourage you to go see / feel them in the flesh as very very different.
One opens on the left, the other on the right. The Ivar 5 is cavenous. I'd sell loads more if it was the size of an 8 but shallower. Customers like widescreen.
Saying that, it's great in smaller fireplaces.
Make a box and try both for size in your opening. Totally different shapes. Both are top stoves across the industry. I'm convinced you would LOVE either

Fantastic review! I hesitate between the Ivar 5 (with logstore) and the Jannik Medium High and my main concern is the distance from combustibles. I have a wall covered with wood panels that would be only like 50cm away from the stove. Looking at the Jannik I think that it has a double wall, so it doesn't get that hot on the sides, but in the specs it is lighter than the Ivar 5, which is strange. I called Dik Geurts and they couldn't tell me if the Jannik has a double wall and if it gets less hot.than the Ivar.
Curious to hear your thoughts on this. Would that 50cm be too close? Thanks and keep up these amazing reviews!

@@tomgal7645 never used a jab in- but I have no doubt that anything DG make will be good ! Saying that, check out the Jannik manual… I’ve just looked it up and that stove needs 300mm distance from combustibles at the back with a heatshield (500mm on the large) and 400mm on the sides (medium and large). Unfortunately cannot add screenshots on here for you
Thank you - and hope this helps

I love my Ivar 5, frustrating the handle would come loose and now the grub screw for the handle has stripped and I can no longer screw it in to have it as a fixed handle... Any suggestions on what I can do?

    • @naturalheatinghellfirepizza
      @naturalheatinghellfirepizza  13 днів тому

I like it as a removable handle. Handles on newer ones are a little different to older ones. How long have you had it ? This may still be covered under warranty via your dealer.
Other than that, would be worth getting an engineering shop to drill and screw the fixing in permanently. Poor Richie at the engineering shop behind me gets a lot of my "project" pieces. We swap for homemade cake a lot of the time 😛

Have been running one of these for 2 years and yes its a lovely stove. Control is second to none however i would not run it for long with the lever closed more than half way. Clean glass and a great sized firebox. However i do get spillage and have to be very careful re fueling. I should of used a 6 inch liner but went 5. The top baffle is very close to front to impove efficiency but with such a small gap spillage can happen. Almost tempted to trim baffle a bit. Still love the stove though. What would you choose between this and heta ambition ?

Interesting that you experience spillage and poor response below half air, what height is your flue?

@@jncg2311 8m masonry stack. Been fine draw with other stoves but running DG through 5" and smoking is a problem. Control lever will close perfectly but I like to keep it running well so no taring up.

@@MyTing775 Sounds like you have found the best way to run it. I note that the rule seems to be that these stoves should only be run on a 5" flue with the DEFRA stop in place, I assume to keep them burning cleanly.
I aso have a 5" flue as the 6" liner just wouldn't pass around the bends in the chimney. Will be interesting to see what I find when it's running.

    • @naturalheatinghellfirepizza

Not had any spillage issues and had one on live previously for a long time. As with any modern stove, upside down fire lighting and fully heating chimney fast is essential - as is reload on a chunky red ember bed only
      Hope this helps

I have a question. In the video, the ivar 5, the rear panels are fitted with the "countersunk" holes facing into the firebox but on the 8 they are the other way round. Cam someone tell me which is the right way? Thx!

wood burners often have a flat base adn you burn on that. Just shovel out when you need to.Not hard 🙂
