this is actually unbelievable, wow i mean it really puts into perspective just how awful life can be and how privileged i am, i never went cold or hungry a day in my life and here you have 10 year old homeless kids with no family, nothing to eat living in the middle of sewage with no prospect of life getting better and they are still smiling. i don't have words man

Thank you again for this video. This is my hometown Bentiu which I mentioned in your first video on South Sudan . Seeing the place where I was born and grew up in such a situation leaves me in tears. I lived in that camp for two years before fleeing on foot to Sudan with a group of friends. It took us fourteen days to reach the first Sudanese border town. We stumbled here and there on bodies of people who had died either of hunger, thirst or sickness on the way, trying to reach Sudan. From Sudan I went to Egypt and then to Libya where I crossed the sea to Europe. Living in the Netherlands today, there is no single day I don’t think and feel bad about suffering of my fellow South Sudaneses. My life here is not that good as I don’t have resident permit and Dutch government wants to send me back because it thinks South Sudan is safe . But I am much better off. Our country is blessed with natural resources, hardworking and resilient people. But the government we have today is a curse to the country. It gives nothing to the people but wars and suffering. But there is hope; there are good South Sudaneses out there who want a better South Sudan. I hope one day South Sudan will be a good country where its citizens will live a decent life and don’t have to flee.

The suffering is caused by evil Democracy, these people are not evolved to be part of society and it is why they suffer this way, their world has been taken and they are left dead.
This is without question the best UA-cam channel I've found in years. Some of the footage is so raw I need to take breaks while watching but Nick does such a great job humanizing these far away war-torn countries that I don't think I would've ever known anything about otherwise.

I've lived and worked in South Sudan. Life is tough there. Thanks Nick for the awareness and showing the world the grim. It was impossible to even shoot simple pics back then, I wonder how you do it.
I honestly think that you are starting to have more of an impact on the lives of those people in those struggling countries than most well established charity organisations. Nothing short of remarkable.
Clearly such programs don't work. Untold millions have been donated and food is dirt cheap there. Sure a few kids get minimal help but the issue continues to keep people donating and keep charities afloat. The only people seeing life changing results work at the charities. As long as the money continues to pour in the problem will never be fixed.
I only found your channel recently and watching this video brought tears to my eyes. I’m from Sri Lanka and I thought our situation is tough. This video put all things into perspective for me. Keep up your good work, Nick. I contributed to your donation the best I can.
You're a true inspiration Nick. You've moved me to not only donate for the first time in my life (at 30 years old) but also to get proactive with my life and to start thinking about and caring for others (I've been selfish and ignorant for far too long, taking my very comfortable life for granted, and not even appreciating it). I'm homeless in America and i live like a king compared to these people. Makes me think of the guy with no shoes who was complaining until he met the guy with no feet... Something I’ve noticed from watching these travel channels is it’s always the people in the most impoverished, roughest 3rd world places you could possibly live that always give the warmest most genuine smiles. We in the 1st world could learn a lot from them. Peace and Love from an Irish American in NYC ☘️🇺🇸 to the People of South Sudan 🇸🇸. Your country is young and it will grow into maturity and stability, but you must grow with it and leave the tribal conflicts in the past.
Try living there and see how far those "warm and genuine smiles" take you. I swear, white people are so effing schmaltzy and want desperately to believe these primitives are a portal to some deeper, soulful meaning in life. That they're unfortunate victims of circumstances greater than themselves. Newsflash: they're not. THIS is who they are, and always will be. So stop importing them into your countries, because they will waste little time in rendering your country every bit as unlivable as the ones they eagerly fled.
Thank you for making this series. Approximately 10 years ago I spent a few years based in Juba for a UN contractor. I had been to all of the locations you showed and they look the same as they did a decade ago. The people of South Sudan will be for ever in my heart. It was difficult for me to describe to my family why I came back a changed person but your series was very accurate and helps explain the situation in the country

I cannot imagine how horrible it must be to grow up in these conditions and try to live yet. Yet, people do and that shows how resilient people can be. We complain and make a fuss about all things around us every day, but those complaints really fade away if you see what these people must endure, and they still manage to smile and live life under constant threat of violence and disease. Thank you Nick for bringing this sad tale to us. We hear on the news and read in the papers that South Sudan is in turmoil, but this series has made the reality of it so much clearer. Thank you for taking the time to visit these terrible places where normal people are too scared to even talk about.
I honestly don’t have words to convey how this series has touched me. My father is from South Sudan, though I have no memory of him. I everything I have learned about this country that is part of my own heritage has always been through the lense of the news. You have given it a real face. A soul. Unpretentious and raw. Very sad and painful. And yet, somehow there was a tiny flicker of hope there. It was humbling and inspiring to see that Young man at the garbage dump who was looking for things to sell say "can you give me a job" He didnt ask for a hand out he wants to work ! the young man and those kids who gathered together small boxes to hold their shoe cleaning kits and clean shoes are an inspiration as well. these people are tough and yet so friendly and kind. they want to work and they just have no opportunities.

It's heartening to see that even when living amidst horrific conditions of poverty and starvation, people still retain the ability/find reason to smile, laugh and shrug the difficulties of life off. Great Video👌. Was working for the UN in 2020 and landed in South Sudan in Juba to collect other South African humanitarian workers. We weren't even allowed at the time to leave the aircraft & security on the ground were super sensitive about taking any sort of pictures whatsoever. Seeing you be so brave and documenting this experience is so commendable 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Well Done!!

this really puts into perspective how ruthless reality is, nothing cares about who you are, or your feelings. The only difference between those poor children and us, is the location we were born... that's literally it. Nobody gets to choose where they start out in life. The fact that you still see so many smiles, light spirits, and making your place in life work is something we can all take away
@@144chosen because the reality it's more to do with culture, values , there is no appreciable difference in geography between say N Korea and S Korea, 2 wholly different outcomes. There is nothing special about most Rich countries geography, Japan being a great example , it drew a bad card , geographically speaking, but it's culture allowed it to thrive into a Modern Peaceful society. So in most countries whether it turns out to become a rich educated country or not has little to do with physical location apart from some edge cases. We see some ex colonies thrive, some not, we see some countries that experience devastation, rebound within a generation, so at what point is a country like Sudan, or Mali , Haiti , it's problems really a reflection of it's people. Luck isn't where you where born, but being born into a tradition and customs of a culture that applies the rule of law, that respects the individual, that acts for the common good, not tribalism, things that our ancestors fought and died for Saying it's just the land , disregards the history , and inventiveness of the people of those places that thrived. The land isn't magical, it's just land. It's doesn't imbue special properties to the people. Swap Japan's population, put them in Sudan and Sudan's in Japan, and then you have Sudan being very rich and Japan being very poor.

Most people with any sort of money to travel normally sit on a beach drinking margaritas, the fact that you chose to travel to show the world the hardships in other country's instead of the leisure side of traveling says a lot about your character. Good on you Nick! Stay safe out there mate.
I mean, you know he monetizes his videos right? I pulled up statistics and he is making anywhere from a MINIMUM of $4,000 to a MAXIMUM of $62,000 a month in ad revenue in a 30-day period. (His max average of $62k, low average of $4,000, depending on viewership/ad ran); an average of $1,145/day. This is no charity number. I am not saying what he does is not impactful, it definitely is, but its not like he is going into debt to provide these videos, there is a clear monetary benefit. EDIT: What I meant to say is he would not be making this type of content (nor money) by standing on a beach drinking margaritas lol.
Nick, I'm not sure you fully realize how important what you're doing is. Aside from this being very high level of journalism, your courage, openness, drive to share and willingness to take risks is outstanding by every imaginable measure. Your videos should be featured in schools to have a better understanding of our world, embrace empathy, clear vision on the status of humanity and to understand how overconsumption, striving for power and wealth effects the part of the world most people are absolutely not familiar with. I’ve been to third-world countries, and the experience was eye-opening. I've been showing my son these videos so he knows how good his life is and never takes anything for granted.

I first heard about the plight of a small group of South Sudanese guys, just after the formation of the new country. I heard it on BBC World Service at 2am, some years back.They were a group of fellas who formed a basketball team, who had all been injured by stepping on mines. They were desperate to get a bus with a ramp for wheelchairs, so they could travel to matches. I so wanted to help them but I was in a very bad financial position at the time. I remembered South Sudan, over the years and how I'd still like to help in some way. I just watched this video and have donated via your link to UNICEF. I just finished watching this video, and as an African, I am now grateful of the life I have because now I see that they are many people that have it bad but still stand resilient. My hopes and prayers are that with time Africa changes for the better and we start to show more love for eachother and see prosperity in our communities. Thank you for sharing this. Africa has the second fastest growing economy in the world, they’re 53 countries in Africa and south Sudan is the newest country in Africa and now there’s a civil war over oil reserves, almost every country has had a civil war including the US
So hard to watch people suffering when we are sitting in our warm homes and being able to buy what we need to survive .. Nick thank you again for a deep soul crushing video showing us how other people live in one of the worst countries in the world.. I don’t think it is necessarily that people are too scared or refuse to go due to arrogance or misinformation. Sure, some people may be judgmental about South Sudan but not going there as a regular person is completely fine and sensible. South Sudan does not exactly have the infrastructure to support tourism, and it is a very dangerous place for foreigners. Why would you shame regular people for not going there? I don’t thin I should go there, and I refuse to go there, but that is not because I’m ignorant or misinformed. It is common sense which stops most people from going there. I can still educate myself about the situation and have compassion for the South Sudanese without going there personally. I don’t think you gave your comment a lot of thought. 🙄

To me, it is a sign that something is wrong with how every country in the world is run and working together in general. I mean, why would a toddler, or any of the other people in this video, in these camps, deserve to suffer? They don't. What have they done? Are they all bad people? Even the children? Surely not. Even criminals and narcissistic assholes can live comfortably if they are born in a wealthy country. How come some people are being published so severely just because they were born in a place like South Sudan? But in general people don't go to most places if they aren't glamorous, or if they've heard rumours about them. Only a very select few countries are genuinely dangerous and should be avoided. What I love about your videos the most is that you treat everyone like a human being, and not like a sensation, no matter how different they are or what conditions they live in. You ask questions, shake everyone's hand, and learn their names. You don't get overly excited or surprised by something being very cheap (like some other UA-camrs I have seen). You take time to properly interact with the locals not just to get the best shots but to actually understand and raise awareness. I appreciate that you don't try too hard to be chatty or funny, and you manage to keep it real. Thank you for your work.
These videos really put things into perspective. People living in developed countries are living in a kind of bubble. They don't know how hard life is for some people. Something as simple as clean water or a roof over your head is a luxury to many people in the world.
Then bloody go and live with them. Nick and his team are making a living making these videos. Saints belong in Africa , he lives in third world New Zealand, talking about taking the piss, bloody liberal hypocrite.

Question out of curiosity: Do you ever get attacked, mugged, threatened during your visits to some of the dangerous places that you go to? Not trying to stereotype any area but when they have no money for food, stealing your camera, or bag, or shoes, etc. could probably fetch them food for a month.
One lesson I always learn from these videos is appreciating that we have toliets and clean sanitation. So easy to take for granted, but so very important.

this is actually unbelievable, wow i mean it really puts into perspective just how awful life can be and how privileged i am, i never went cold or hungry a day in my life and here you have 10 year old homeless kids with no family, nothing to eat living in the middle of sewage with no prospect of life getting better and they are still smiling. i don't have words man

Thank you again for this video. This is my hometown Bentiu which I mentioned in your first video on South Sudan . Seeing the place where I was born and grew up in such a situation leaves me in tears. I lived in that camp for two years before fleeing on foot to Sudan with a group of friends. It took us fourteen days to reach the first Sudanese border town. We stumbled here and there on bodies of people who had died either of hunger, thirst or sickness on the way, trying to reach Sudan.
From Sudan I went to Egypt and then to Libya where I crossed the sea to Europe. Living in the Netherlands today, there is no single day I don’t think and feel bad about suffering of my fellow South Sudaneses.
My life here is not that good as I don’t have resident permit and Dutch government wants to send me back because it thinks South Sudan is safe . But I am much better off.
Our country is blessed with natural resources, hardworking and resilient people. But the government we have today is a curse to the country. It gives nothing to the people but wars and suffering. But there is hope; there are good South Sudaneses out there who want a better South Sudan. I hope one day South Sudan will be a good country where its citizens will live a decent life and don’t have to flee.
Thank you for sharing a bit of your story. I hope that you are able to be and feel at home soon. Everyone deserves a home.

Clearly such programs don't work. Untold millions have been donated and food is dirt cheap there. Sure a few kids get minimal help but the issue continues to keep people donating and keep charities afloat. The only people seeing life changing results work at the charities. As long as the money continues to pour in the problem will never be fixed.

Something I’ve noticed from watching these travel channels is it’s always the people in the most impoverished, roughest 3rd world places you could possibly live that always give the warmest most genuine smiles. Thank you for making this series. Approximately 10 years ago I spent a few years based in Juba for a UN contractor. I had been to all of the locations you showed and they look the same as they did a decade ago. The people of South Sudan will be for ever in my heart. It was difficult for me to describe to my family why I came back a changed person but your series was very accurate and helps explain the situation in the country

I cannot imagine how horrible it must be to grow up in these conditions and try to live yet. Yet, people do and that shows how resilient people can be. We complain and make a fuss about all things around us every day, but those complaints really fade away if you see what these people must endure, and they still manage to smile and live life under constant threat of violence and disease. Thank you Nick for bringing this sad tale to us. We hear on the news and read in the papers that South Sudan is in turmoil, but this series has made the reality of it so much clearer. Thank you for taking the time to visit these terrible places where normal people are too scared to even talk about.

I honestly don’t have words to convey how this series has touched me. My father is from South Sudan, though I have no memory of him. I everything I have learned about this country that is part of my own heritage has always been through the lense of the news. You have given it a real face. A soul. Unpretentious and raw. Very sad and painful. And yet, somehow there was a tiny flicker of hope there. I am deeply impressed by your courage to take this on, not only from a safety standpoint but it must have been very hard emotionally too.

He didnt ask for a hand out he wants to work ! the young man and those kids who gathered together small boxes to hold their shoe cleaning kits and clean shoes are an inspiration as well. these people are tough and yet so friendly and kind. they want to work and they just have no opportunities.

Great Video👌. Was working for the UN in 2020 and landed in South Sudan in Juba to collect other South African humanitarian workers. We weren't even allowed at the time to leave the aircraft & security on the ground were super sensitive about taking any sort of pictures whatsoever. @@144chosen because the reality it's more to do with culture, values , there is no appreciable difference in geography between say N Korea and S Korea, 2 wholly different outcomes.
There is nothing special about most Rich countries geography, Japan being a great example , it drew a bad card , geographically speaking, but it's culture allowed it to thrive into a Modern Peaceful society.
So in most countries whether it turns out to become a rich educated country or not has little to do with physical location apart from some edge cases.
We see some ex colonies thrive, some not, we see some countries that experience devastation, rebound within a generation, so at what point is a country like Sudan, or Mali , Haiti , it's problems really a reflection of it's people.
Luck isn't where you where born, but being born into a tradition and customs of a culture that applies the rule of law, that respects the individual, that acts for the common good, not tribalism, things that our ancestors fought and died for
Saying it's just the land , disregards the history , and inventiveness of the people of those places that thrived. The land isn't magical, it's just land. It's doesn't imbue special properties to the people.
Swap Japan's population, put them in Sudan and Sudan's in Japan, and then you have Sudan being very rich and Japan being very poor.

Most people with any sort of money to travel normally sit on a beach drinking margaritas, the fact that you chose to travel to show the world the hardships in other country's instead of the leisure side of traveling says a lot about your character. Good on you Nick! Stay safe out there mate.
I mean, you know he monetizes his videos right? I pulled up statistics and he is making anywhere from a MINIMUM of $4,000 to a MAXIMUM of $62,000 a month in ad revenue in a 30-day period. (His max average of $62k, low average of $4,000, depending on viewership/ad ran); an average of $1,145/day. This is no charity number. I am not saying what he does is not impactful, it definitely is, but its not like he is going into debt to provide these videos, there is a clear monetary benefit.

I first heard about the plight of a small group of South Sudanese guys, just after the formation of the new country. I heard it on BBC World Service at 2am, some years back.They were a group of fellas who formed a basketball team, who had all been injured by stepping on mines. They were desperate to get a bus with a ramp for wheelchairs, so they could travel to matches. I so wanted to help them but I was in a very bad financial position at the time. I remembered South Sudan, over the years and how I'd still like to help in some way. I just watched this video and have donated via your link to UNICEF. So hard to watch people suffering when we are sitting in our warm homes and being able to buy what we need to survive .. Nick thank you again for a deep soul crushing video showing us how other people live in one of the worst countries in the world.. All people deserve the basic things to survive like water, food, and a roof over their heads. prayers to all

I don’t think it is necessarily that people are too scared or refuse to go due to arrogance or misinformation. Sure, some people may be judgmental about South Sudan but not going there as a regular person is completely fine and sensible. South Sudan does not exactly have the infrastructure to support tourism, and it is a very dangerous place for foreigners. Why would you shame regular people for not going there? I don’t thin I should go there, and I refuse to go there, but that is not because I’m ignorant or misinformed. It is common sense which stops most people from going there. I can still educate myself about the situation and have compassion for the South Sudanese without going there personally. I don’t think you gave your comment a lot of thought. 🙄

I find it more sad that such places even exist. To me, it is a sign that something is wrong with how every country in the world is run and working together in general.
I mean, why would a toddler, or any of the other people in this video, in these camps, deserve to suffer? They don't.
What have they done? Are they all bad people? Even the children? Surely not. Even criminals and narcissistic assholes can live comfortably if they are born in a wealthy country.
How come some people are being published so severely just because they were born in a place like South Sudan?
I am not trying to attack anyone, I just really, really hope that this suffering will stop. To me, this is beyond injustice, it is literally insane. These people deserve so much better.
Guess I'll go donate a little bit so one random child can have some food 😅
@@phoenix72999 Well said. I'm not shaming anyone for not going, I didn't mean that, it's their choice. But in general people don't go to most places if they aren't glamorous, or if they've heard rumours about them. Only a very select few countries are genuinely dangerous and should be avoided. I'm thanking Nick for shedding light on these sorts of places, that's all.

What I love about your videos the most is that you treat everyone like a human being, and not like a sensation, no matter how different they are or what conditions they live in. You ask questions, shake everyone's hand, and learn their names. You don't get overly excited or surprised by something being very cheap (like some other UA-camrs I have seen). You take time to properly interact with the locals not just to get the best shots but to actually understand and raise awareness. I appreciate that you don't try too hard to be chatty or funny, and you manage to keep it real. Thank you for your work.

These videos really put things into perspective. People living in developed countries are living in a kind of bubble. They don't know how hard life is for some people. Something as simple as clean water or a roof over your head is a luxury to many people in the world.

It really is amazing to get such a 'normal' insight to such obscure parts of the world like this. We're mostly stuck in the western world, running the rat race, totally oblivious to this alternative society, just because we are distanced from it entirely

Question out of curiosity: Do you ever get attacked, mugged, threatened during your visits to some of the dangerous places that you go to?
Not trying to stereotype any area but when they have no money for food, stealing your camera, or bag, or shoes, etc. could probably fetch them food for a month.
The sad Truth is skin color and Country of origin. No open pockets and If you’re from the USA never say that.
One lesson I always learn from these videos is appreciating that we have toliets and clean sanitation. So easy to take for granted, but so very important.
