  • A review of the Highest mileage Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG ends up being quite surprising. This is a one owner car that was maintained at one dealership. i break down the exact cost of ownership and show you how an E55 AMG with a crazy amount of miles runs and drives.
    Enjoy and thanks to iCars Chicago in Skokie for letting me review the Mercedes E55.

    I'm on my third E55 AMG right now. My first one, a W210 model (first generation) model year 2000, I drove it to 308,000 (bought with 80,000) and sold it. It still made all its power, and the transmission was starting to act a bit funky, but it still mostly worked properly. I sold that car in 2009 (bought in 2004), replaced it with a 2003 Audi RS6, which I only kept about 6 months, and daily drove it along side a 2000 BMW 540i 6-speed, sold both, went to another W210 2001 model E55 AMG, bought with 60,000 miles, and sold in August with 158,0000 miles on it. Replaced with a W211 2003 model like the one reviewed - which currently has 139,000 miles on it, and it is running strong... let's see how far I can push it. Maintenance on these E55s isn't terrible... I don't make a ton of money, never have - I pray to the Gods of Depreciation, and they provide. :-)

      Anton Zuykov ..., are you kidding? I used to manage a fleet of Range Rovers which was used to drive wealthy clients and others who lease or rent them in Great Britain and they had 300-400,00 miles in 2yrs, and never broken down, how about that! 2 had over 1 million miles in 5years. The reason we never used the Audi Q7, Mercedes AMG 4x 4, Porsche Cayenne , they are posers cars which only do a few thousand miles a year taking the kids to school especially in Chelsea, England, not hard working vehicles like the Range Rovers with their proven offroad capabilities, plus our clients do not want to drive or be driven in them.

      Do you have any basic advice how to keep cars running 'forever'. I never accelerate harshly, I just drive normal and gradually build up speed on long roads. Is it really just about changing oil, or is it about regular inspections and getting things fixed asap.

    • @TitaniumCountess
      @TitaniumCountess 7 років тому +11

      I'll say this for my high mile E55, and the other cars I own: I drove the living crap out of them. All the time. Strict adherence to maintenance schedule is a must, and don't defer maintenance - OR defer anything that you know is breaking, and could result in a total failure. Most German cars give you a lot of warning before they completely break, and usually based on the symptoms you can figure out the problem part before it fails. For Ian and his Range Rover fleet, I am impressed... and I would guess strict MX had everything to do with the longevity of the cars.

    This is my dream car. I always wanted to own one but never found a clean E55 W211. I live in the UAE, Dubai and most E55's are Japan imported which does not come panoramic and two color leather interior tone and most probably has fake mileage . Sadly the gulf specs are not well taken care of and most of the owners are asking 20k $ + . Also the US imported; 90% of them had major accidents and refixed to the gulf. I have been looking for the perfect one since 7 years and will still wait because it is worth the wait! Extraordinary and wonderful car. Cheers to all E55 W211 owners.

    Great video Buddy, Im in the UK and Im that young guy you spoke about at every dealership.... I worked at a Jaguar dealership back in 2005 until about 2008 and Ive lost count of how many S-Type R's, XJR'S and XKR's Ive taken for a 'Spirited drive'.... I actually got followed back to the dealership by the police once and asked if I was the owner of the car (I blatantly wasnt, Wearing green Jaguar overalls), I got marched into reception and into the service managers office and the cop proceeded to rip me a new ass hole.... Luckily for me the service manager was a cool guy and let it slide and then went on to tell me about him driving an Audi RS6 at 170 mph on the motorway.
    Ive never driven an E55 but I drove my Dads friends SL55 when it was new in about 2003 and that thing was quick.... Not as quick as the CL65 Ive got to drive though.

I saw one E500 that had 384k and looked flawless outside and just a couple of rips on the drivers seat. My family has a 2006 E350 and it only has 64k miles but has held up VERY well. Truth. I bought an '06 with 125K on it that spent the first half its life so far in the Seattle metro area and the second half in Honolulu. Both areas have some crap roads and lots of stop and go driving. You can tell the suspension took a beating and overall it's nowhere near as clean as this car.

    I plan on getting a W211 E55 very soon here, hopefully by May so I've been watching videos all over UA-cam on them. I definitely have a little more confidence with buying one with some higher mileage. My family owned a brand new Barola Red W211 E55 back in the day, very rare color and a gorgeous one at that. I'll do the E63 facelift, already have the bumper sitting right next to me, and already know exactly what E55 I'm getting. I can't wait, and this video just pumped me up a bit more...

    My 2000 E320 wagon has 355,000 miles and still going smooth and strong. I've it a genuine rebuilt trans I bought for $600 from a wrecking yard and it's been awesome. New coils, shocks, rotors, wheels, tires, drive line discs, water pump, radiator, all by myself with parts mostly from parts geeks. I installed an aux input that bypasses the cassette circuit using that online tutorial found on a forum somewhere. Oh yeah, new headlights and front lower bumper (haven't installed it yet) I intend to drive it for many more years unless I get a V8 model or an AMG. But I'm plenty happy with what I got. I think I started with about 167,000 miles on it. My sis passed it along to me before she passed of cancer bless her heart.

    The maintenance total per year sounds like quite a bit-around $4,100-but keep in mind, that's for almost 31k miles annually!! That can get cut in half (maybe a little less) with an example driven 12-15k miles a year. A couple grand a year in maintenance at the dealer on a 469 hp rocket isn't bad at all; indy shops or DIY service make these an extremely attractive budget speed proposition.
    I've been wanting one for ages, but the Sensotronic brakes freak me out a bit-I may hold out for the W211 E63 to fall into the E55 price bracket. Preferably a wagon, but they're practically unobtainium.

I live in Virginia and have driven this car to Vegas 4 times over the last 7 years, getting close to 40 MPG, a 7000 mile road trip. It's comfortable, powerful and fast. The car now has 279,000 miles on it and other than routine maintenance and preventative maintenance, I've had to replace two driver's side engine mounts, a rear trans mount and a water pump. That's all that's failed in the last close to 200,000 miles. I will keep the car forever and WAS expecting to easily do 400,000 miles but after seeing this gas engine's longevity, I'll need to shoot for 600K! E55 or E63 in the W211 chassis is next.

    I purchased a 1998 BMW 540 three years ago. Was told that the motor was "trashed". I checked CarFax, the title was clean and had no crash reports, so I figured what the heck. Gave the guy the $200 (not a typo 2 hundred) he wanted to be ride of it. Toed it home to find what it needed to run: tires, radiator hose that was split, one coil, oil change, and a battery. Three years later now with 200K miles I'm still driving it as my daily driver. The best part: I have spent ZERO additional money on fixing anything, it just runs. My experiment is to see how long it will run with as little money spent as possible.

    bought a used w210 e55 back in 04 with about 75k on the odo. It was finally wrecked in 12 with about 170k. During my ownership I've spent around 7k to 8k on maintenance, around 2k on mods, 4k on wheels(due to theft), and about 4k on repairs. That e55 and my 911c4 cab are still 2 of my fav that I've owned.

    I know somebody that drives a 2003 VW Passat, a 2.3 5cyl which has well over 1 million kilometers (~620.000 miles) on it, I think he's at 1,2 million actually. He has owned the car since new... well okay, he actually bought it when it was a couple of months old and probably 1500km (~930 miles) on it (car was repo'd from previous owner) Has always maintained it himself (used to be a VW dealer mechanic)... and it still looks amazing inside and out. Rebuild the block twice I think, worn out a couple of clutches and he changed the seats at one point because they were completely worn. But beside normal maintenance and the obvious repairs that have to be done on a car like that, he has never had any major issues with it and no accidents.

    98’ Subaru Outback wagon 5speed manual trans. So far 483,XXX miles. I’ve done head gaskets twice however the last time I did the upgrade of triple layer metal gaskets so it should be good for the rest of its time. I do timing belt every 120k and oil every 5-8k miles depending on time of year living in northern MN I use different viscosity, lighter stuff gets chained more often. Also if I’m using the car harder than normal like during ice racing season I’ll change more often. Trans and diff were swapped for LSD units from a newer outback as opposed to the stock open diffs it came with at around 230k miles. The stock trans had a pronounced whine in reverse and synchro issues from 1-2. Having had plenty of Subaru 5speeds go out on me I opted for the upgrade and use synthetic diff fluid now. I have a lift kit and exhaust as my only upgrades. Subaru issues stem from weak bearings and crap head gaskets. The later can be fixed easily, the bearings can be dealt with by simply checking the oil regularly and changing it regularly. You add a turbo to a Subaru and that becomes infinitely more important!

    my '99 E320 V6 wagon has 437k, newer motor, I bot it for $1500 3 years ago w 421k and drove it from Sacramento to Maine, now it lives in NY. I'll never put big miles on it, I have too many toys, and PO400 EGR code means I can't get it inspected until I figure out why it's on. Mine looks great, just bad rust on top frame rear doors, weird for a dry climate California car. Runs and drives super, no rattles creaks and except for funky rear hatch wiper, everything works perfectly!

    $12,000 sale price? lol that's waaaay overpriced and changing the rims isn't going to convince someone to spend $12k on a car with 400k+ miles, regardless where it was serviced. But of course you're not in a rush to sell it since it helps drive traffic to your website where people can view more overpriced vehicles.

      Pudi Monster head gaskets, some electronics electronics, possible ac repair etc... those thing don't generally last for that many miles.
      Those cars are also designed generally for 200,000km. Regardless, seeing it's more than double that with 401,000miles, that is far beyond the end of life of the vehicle, and no once except you would be willing to pay $12,000 for it knowing that there is a possibility of a major repair work in the not so distanced future.
      I bet the person selling this car wouldn't fork 12k on this particular high mileage car himself.

    I reached 340,000 miles on my 2003 C320 4matic as of last year. But had to get rid of it due to it wouldn't pass emissions. It had carbon build up all throughout the engine. I mean EVERYWHERE! Intake system parts, etc.. Had no other major issues with the car. Only other major part replacements done on the car, was engine and transmission mount replacements, Ujoint replacement and axle replacements. Engine and transmission were fine. (Except of course the carbon build up).
    Was hoping to reach the million mile mark, but when the cost to clean out all the carbon far exceed the value of the car, I had no choice but to get rid of it. :( Was a sad day for me!

    BTW......even with the coil spring compressor I bought for around $75, doing the coils on all four was the absolute scariest thing I've ever done. Felt like an IED specialist. Actually messed up my left pinkie which was next to a coil, when carrying it compressed the tool slipped probably a 1/16" and just that tiny amount sent a shock wave into the side of my pinky which turned red, swelled up, scabbed over, and took almost six weeks to get back to normal. There's a tiny lump at the side of the first knuckle but that's it. I probably saved a ton but it's very dangerous work you gotta be super careful!

    I have an 07 C230 Sport with the AMG package and it's an E85 car. It has 75 thousand on it but it is absolutely flawless. It's silver with a black gut , it loves octane boost being an E85 car and there's a noticeable difference. I bought a Vortech V3 si trim head unit it's sitting in my room. I'm waiting for the weather to break and I'll be custom mounting it I also will be putting a AEM meth water kit in it. In 94-95 I built a sick 93 mustang GT new. I built it myself, it had aluminum heads a Vortech s trim and all that goes with it you name it I did it! From injectors to 3:73 gears but it went 13.3 @104MPH 11.6@116 and finally 10.5 @ 128 over the three times I went to the track as I was building it.

    I had a W211 E55 AMG from 2005-2015. I bought it with 16K miles and it had 207K miles on it when I was rear-ended and the insurance company totaled it. I drove it from San Antonio back to CA and you wouldn't have known it was in a wreck by driving it. I still have my receipts - I'll have to get them out and add it up - I probably don't want to know. I just replaced it with an 08 E63 with 47K miles on it. I plan on keeping this one awhile too. I do love AMG V8s, but the new 2.0 turbo w/AWD is interesting too.

      That's a good run for sure. What do you think of the E63 compared to the 55? I always thought the 55 felt a lot faster with the lower end torque being higher. Love the face lift and the crazy brakes on the 211 E63 though.
      Thanks for watching too btw!

    • @iTim71
      @iTim71 7 років тому

      The 63 feels even more solid - like a tank. The body rigidity was much improved over the W211 and the air suspension aids it as well. I just watched your R63 - I was looking for one of those due to the AWD. Traction is a problem in the 63s with all the torque, but I do love the 7-sp vs the old 5. My car was dealer serviced as well for most of it's life. There was a few years I had a good indy but other than that since I'm military and move a ton, I just chose the dealer. The 55 had two warranty issues - camshafts and steering rack. My 63 is out of warranty, but the previous owner had already replaced the camshafts, headbolts, tappets and motor mounts so I'm not too worried about major issues. Well, except when it comes to a front brake job. I may go aftermarket...we'll see. But I do truly love the interior upgrades on the 63, it feels more special than the W211 - but will always have a soft spot for it. Great vids btw!

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  7 років тому

      Thanks so much, glad you liked them.If you get the time and feel brave, doing the brakes are not that bad on the 55 or 63. Actually a little easy since on the 63 they don't have the sbc electronic brakes. If I get one in my shop Ill make a video on it. Ya the R63 with awd is crazy. Just such a rare car its hard to find.

    "$10 leaking transmission gasket that they all had" tells you everything you need to know about MB engineering and quality control. A friend had one and when the gasket leaked the dealer told him that he needed a new trans. He had the work done (if they really did it at all) before he told me the story. I had 2 new ones and NEVER again. In fact, I'll never have another German car of any sort. Switched to Lexus on the recommendation of a MB master tech. It's been great. Incidentally, the service manager at the MB dealership drove a Toyota and his wife drove a Mazda. He told me that neither one had ever had a repair, only wear items.

The 722.6 transmission doesn’t need any service if just ride normally, all it needs new oil every 100k. That transmission is so simple that there is not a lot to break. I opened my up on my CLS55 at 160K and it’s pretty clean on the inside, just aged oil that needed to change. And changed seals just in case.
