Jeff. You are literally my go to man and I’m here in Australia. I’m renovating a house we’ve purchased as our retirement home and as usual check your channel for tips and tricks on everything I’m doing. We have been talking of making a mud room cupboard for our entrance, UA-cam search and guess who pops up! As usual, great presentation. Thank you for everything you do to help us renovators.
Gday Jeff! I'm from Western Australia and a lot of houses over here are brick/cement/concrete (in lots of different varieties). I've struggled to find any good videos on how to secure things to the walls. E.g. what fixings are best for each type? How to find the solid parts of the wall and not the hallow parts when the wall is plastered over. How to detect wires/water lines? And how to patch holes etc. For instance recently I used tapcons and they immediately turned the hole to dust! I think you'd open up your channel to a lot more viwers as masonry homes are big over here :) I love your work and have used your videos on multiple DIY jobs. Hopefully youll see this and consider it. Thanks for your content regardless and empowering so many people. Cheers!
Those shims on top of the cabinet to make it easier to hang are the kinds of helpful tricks idiots like me would never learn without watching this channel. More of those please!!!
Pumped to update the foyer this way. However, only Canadian Home Depot’s carry the Live Edge Timber brand and shipping is $45. I have a Kreg jig but kind of timid, but grabbed everything else so I’ll give it a go.
he stayed offset of the wall by 4" to make sure he had room to plug in anything and to clean between the wall and the vertical cabinet. Hope that helps...
You’re giving me the willies cutting that board on your leg with the circular saw. I’ll await your next video series on how to renovate a church with one leg. BTW I almost bought a church last year. Should have done that.
Love all your videos Jeff! Your lessons are invaluable. I noticed you're putting on a little weight - still looking good though. Take the time to take care of yourself.
Any thoughts on doing something like this but within the constraints of a entrance way closet? Really tempted to toss off the old bifold doors from the closet and create something more open.
Geez, my kid just looked over my shoulder as I was watching this vid…I had to get back to sealing my wood burning stove that I was already working on…I’ll be back!
No worries! the 2" lumber transfers load to the gables which are supported by the 2x6. on the back side are 3 screws rated at 80 lbs each. that mean you would need to use 500lbs of weight before you even begin to come close to the capacity of this build. Cheers!
Funny, I'm moving into a new house in 2 weeks and need to build one if these. Speaking of moving, the house we sold had many improvements thanks to primarily YOUR videos. Thanks so much Jeff!
I have been preaching for a while to anyone who will listen that they need to watch these videos. Because of Jeff I was able to repair an entire second floor in my aunts house so my cousin had a place to live when they lost their house. And that’s not including all the work that I was able to do in my three family home that I was able to sell before I move to Florida. I owe Jeff so much for of his help.
24:46 Hi, first thanks for the video. It is well explained but when you cut with a circular saw I wouldnt recommend to put the workpiece on your leg. I know you are experience and know what you doing but meny don't. Even I as someone with few years of experience would feel much better using 2×4 as a support for cutting. Love your channel.
Ok for a DIY projects... But you're basically teaching a person who doesn't know what to do to do it wrong... Someone with no skills on circular saw cutting on the air, that's kinda messed up.!! They can cut their fingers or worse.!!
Hey Jeff....we're thinking of doing the same thing. Where did you get your cabinets and bench base from? Thanks man...you're really inspiring us to do this stuff on our own.
I think so too. For the longest time I used a dry rag and it left a very thin film that you could see once stained. I also did not sand it enough after.
26:48 - OMG, what the hell are you doing? Is this a recommendation for rookies? Are you kidding me! This is not the first time when I see safety issues in your video, but this one rock!
Oh Lord! You scare the hell out of me free-handing those cuts! So easy to just do it safely than shave a few precious moments from a task. And I meant to use the word ‘shave’ cause that’s what could happen to your body! Time I have - spare body parts not so much! 🤣
Doesn’t measure for the hooks because he says he doesn’t need to and then makes mistakes lol. I don’t know why you can’t take a few extra steps to be safe, if you’re teaching people how go do this stuff that should include safety.
I'm in the U.S., need to stop (?) the drafts on my 32-yo tract built home. Our utilities are crazy high, I'm a 70-yo woman. Ceilings in living area + master suite, imcluding bath--are 13'-15', w slant ceilings. Cookie-cutter home, dirty-built, cut corners wherever they could. They went for speed over quality :( On concrete slab, roof-mtd heat pump. 26°F - 115°F, half the year, each. Your content is a godsend; thx so much!!
I just want to thank this man for his DIY stuff!!! Right down to the “run the plastic vapor barrier down under the drywall” at the concrete floor… By watching him, I know have the ballz to re-do my 1950s finished basement that is rotted out to shite
"Only dangerous if you're stupid", I can relate to that statement. Cut parts of four fingers clean off, doing something I knew was dangerous on the table saw, thinking that if it worked it would save me a lot of time...STUPID
The first time he said level he meant plumb. Level is in comparison to the ground or floor. Plumb is in comparison to the wall. In quick conversation you will get these reversed. But if you ever build a doorway or a fence it is good to get them right when talking to others.
He does declare! This looks beautiful and definitely simple. I still can't wrap my mind around that profile cut for the baseboard, but maybe one of these days the lightbulb will flash on 😂
its called a baseboard cope. When doing an inside 90 degree angle you have 2 options. either mitre both sides at 45, or cut one side square at 90 and cope the other side, as jeff did. he elected to cope here because the other piece of baseboard was already attached to the wall.
I just bought a modular home in North Carolina 6 years old resolved and this house looks like it's got 50 years worth of abuse.. The carpenter or construction crew that built this is a joke
Hi I love your project and interested in building mud room for my house. May I know from where you bought cabinets and other material and how much it cost over all ?
LOVE your informative and down to earth tips Jeff, always welcome down in Australia if you want to do some international content 👌😁 I've got some plasterboard (drywall) alcoves/niches (metal boxes) where you cut out a square/rectangle and mount it I between studs. You can then put in concealed lighting a shelf or artwork with contrasting background colours. It's like adding gallery space to walls without things protruding into a hallway etc. If you have things like that, I'd love to see one installed and how to finish the plasterboard edges properly. Cheers 👍🙏. (Also, I've noticed that you're getting more and more out of breath lately. Can you keep an eye on your health please, even just a check-up, we'd hate to lose you on here! 🙏🙏)
Slowly renovating this place. Going to take about 3-4 years due to budget constraints. Watching these videos will make it all possible & perfect every time. 😉
ok awesome video, but how about lets not show people how to rip lumber using your knee as a sawhorse. I get it, pros cut safety corners, but lets not show DIYers that.
I feel like an idiot because the directions are way too fast for me to keep up and still know what's what. I am clearly going to need to watch this 17 times lol

that circular saw rip would work ok if you used correct batteries. saws, grinders, anything that needs more "umph" will work poorly with 2Ah and weaker batteries. I have a weaker brushed circular saw, but with one 4ah baterry I easily ripped 12m of red oak.
thats the hardest way to scribe a skirting board i've seen.. i simply cut a 45 and follow it with a coping saw. Also sanding sponges work better than steel wool, when sanding steel wool leaves steel behind

Hanging that cabinet with 2 shims was pretty awesome.

So timely. I'm about to hang a cabinet by myself. Good tips here! 👍
Those shims on top of the cabinet to make it easier to hang are the kinds of helpful tricks idiots like me would never learn without watching this channel. More of those please!!!

Yes, absolutely brilliant!
I've been a diyer for 30 years, never thought to do that🤦
Your laser level would have saved you some grief with those hangers! :D
What a brave man, im so scared of the saw i could never use my own leg as a table 😅
You should add, keep a single-handed tactical tourniquet on your belt. Doesn’t take long to bleed out.
Pumped to update the foyer this way. However, only Canadian Home Depot’s carry the Live Edge Timber brand and shipping is $45. I have a Kreg jig but kind of timid, but grabbed everything else so I’ll give it a go.
Thank you for sharing this video. Are the boards from Live Edge already planed?
Hi Jeff and family.
Great tips! What about the wall plug--did I miss something?
he stayed offset of the wall by 4" to make sure he had room to plug in anything and to clean between the wall and the vertical cabinet. Hope that helps...
Personally I would have put the cabinet flush up against the right wall and cut a hole in the cabinet to access the plug. To each his own I guess🤷
You’re giving me the willies cutting that board on your leg with the circular saw. I’ll await your next video series on how to renovate a church with one leg.
BTW I almost bought a church last year. Should have done that.
maybe but the insurance for the first 90 days was a killer in this market!
Love all your videos Jeff! Your lessons are invaluable. I noticed you're putting on a little weight - still looking good though. Take the time to take care of yourself.
Thanks!
Any thoughts on doing something like this but within the constraints of a entrance way closet? Really tempted to toss off the old bifold doors from the closet and create something more open.
Nice! 😊👍
I understand why you would use the chopsaw instead of a coping saw or a file but showing that trick to a newbie I’m not thinking is safe.
show!
Geez, my kid just looked over my shoulder as I was watching this vid…I had to get back to sealing my wood burning stove that I was already working on…I’ll be back!
If the wall in the room that I want to build this on is brick, what would you recommend to use to mount to the brick wall?
I would add 1x4 strapping horizontally and attach everything to it.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks!
Where can I find a unit like this one? My preliminary searches are coming up empty
they are just off the shelf cabinets. try ikea or a big box store.
Blow that dust through the house!!
Workshop doesnt need to be bloody.... got it, ill put away the sacrificial pig.... for now 👀
You’re a good example of disdain for PPE.
I’m a lady, can I build this project?
So the bench didn't need support?
It should have more than it does, for sure.
on the front its supported with the 2x6. on the back its screwed into 3 studs, which is enough support.
No worries! the 2" lumber transfers load to the gables which are supported by the 2x6. on the back side are 3 screws rated at 80 lbs each. that mean you would need to use 500lbs of weight before you even begin to come close to the capacity of this build. Cheers!

That’s awesome bro! Congrats on the new house! And I’m sure you’ll fill it up with many handy projects haha

Might be just me, but I prefer not to use a circular saw on my knee
I agree with most everything he does. Safety second I think he says, but even I was cringing when he did that.
yeah not a cool thing to broadcast to diyers

I want to do the same thing, am struggling to find suitable cabinetry. Did you find anything after all?
@@shanebp it's a bit late maybe but I'm pretty sure it's the Hampton Bay Edson from Home Depot
Wood glue does not take stain the same as wood. So when sanding make sure you remove all the excess glue you did not wipe off earlier.
I think that is why he wipes it with a wet cloth right away and then later sands it later flat
I think so too. For the longest time I used a dry rag and it left a very thin film that you could see once stained. I also did not sand it enough after.
Love your work - but that was a pretty insane (and dangerous) way to trim the tongue off at 26:45! thank goodness the battery died.
Hi Jeff, where do you order custom cabinets? I am in Toronto~ My wife loves your show!!!and makes me watch it ^^
Any links to find the live edge material from Home Depot? Or what the search name of that product is?

"Don't have to use a measuring tape for everything, right?... Does that make sense? Did I mess it up?" 🤣

Foyer, laundry room, front entrance... Or... that part of your house that always has too many shoes 😂

I was flabbergasted at the miter cut you just did. Absolutely brilliant. Still haven't recovered.
its called a cope, not a miter! a miter would be if both pieces of baseboard was cut at a 45 degree angle.
