I don't have any power tools to build wood furniture, but I would like to start. I looked at some online videos and almost gave up, given the number of large and expensive machines and power tools some folks have. My goal is to build a custom shoe bench for a specific area I have at home. When I was almost giving up, I found your video and that inspired me to start and take the next step. I just watched it and it brought a smile to my face (and hope too!). I won't buy an expensive table saw. I just learned from your video that a thing called saw guide rail exists! So I can buy a circular saw and this saw guide to get the straight cuts on the playwood done. I may also buy a mitter saw for specific cuts. I will also need an orbital sander and maybe a nail gun (but I have no idea which one to buy and which nails to use yet). I will also try to buy the pocket hole jig. I saw several videos where people use pocket holes with screws to put the pieces together rather than using cam lock fasteners. Pocket holes probably make the final product sturdier and if the idea is not do disassemble the piece of furniture in the future, then I guess pocket holes would be the best choice. So, I will now plan on what tools and materials to buy. Your video was the motivation I needed. This will be my very first project of this kind. And I want to keep going and build more pieces of furniture and other things made of wood. Thank you for sharing any detail you can. You wouldn't believe how much your videos help DIY folks like me. Your explanations are better than many that I saw from professionals. Keep doing the great work that you do. Much peace and health to you and your family. Thank you!

I like it. If you don't have wood filler and want to fill holes on a piece you're painting, you can use drywall joint compound. I liked seeing the painting part. I think it's not just for tips and tricks, like the sanding, but it's also weirdly satisfying . . . like pressure washing and lawn mowing videos.
As always, a great build. Simple but so stylish! I guess the wish to see you painting is the same as to ask what tools you use. Lot people think, that if they use your tool, they can do the same as you do. But there ist the skill an practicing part they forget about!! And the imagination and drawing/planing part if they don't just want to copy. Anyway, your skills are great and I love your videos and builds!! 🥰

I'm with you on a sprayer. Bought one used it once and cleaned it and took it back. Felt like if I'm not painting everything and for a business it wasn't worth it. Anyway love the build wish I had somewhere to put one

Shara, you surprised me by releasing this video on Friday instead of Saturday morning. I'm glad you included your "boring" paint process for you as my Wife has been talking to me about painting the pole barn and house most of this Winter. I'll be sharing with her. I'm working on my "built-in" office and it's starting to come together which is really exciting here. Following your lead I ordered 10 pairs of drawer glides (need 4 pairs for this project) visited you video on how to build drawers. I guess I have my own style for drawers but a refresher course certainly was helpful so thank you so much. I bought a thermometer for my shop for $8.00. When it says 40 degrees inside the shop that's good thing! Next week it's going to get bitter cold here so progress may get slowed on the project. Despite the excitement around the building process my attention will get divided between the chickens, dog, and my Son's dog whom we're taking care of this weekend. So I'm not a bit surprised to see Bud and Lucy in your video's and your workshop. It's a dog's (or cat's world) don't you know. I appreciate all the little tips you add which make a big difference around here. Thanks for Sharing!

Aw yay a new full length Shara build! I love the board-and batten style of this! I believe a lot of us would just as soon snap our fingers at the end of the build and have the finish magically appear, but your finishing process is simple, sound and straightforward... and no one can argue with the results. Dang Shara, this video was just full of gold for me! From the cat attacking your process, a little ride on the struggle bus, and being forced to paint for us (dance monkey, dance!). You know, you could always get a sprayer if you don’t like painting that badly! (I love the description of what the thought of cleaning a sprayer makes you feel!). Now to the seriousness, this is a project that I am seriously going to have to hide from my wife! Not only has she been telling me she wants something just like this in our entry, but green is even her favorite color! 🙊 So, just for this week, I’m going to hide you from my wife, lest I find myself heading out for a couple sheets of plywood! I looked at the blog foe this video to see what exact plywood you use, because it looks better than the one I get from HD. I see you use the better kind, birch. I always go for the cheapest, but may switch to this one, it looks much nicer.

Another great project. As I watched you handling those plywood panels I wondered if Kreg hadn’t provided you their carrier. I finally decided to try one and it helps quite a bit. With that I can can position the carrier in the center of the panel, then lift and support near my shoulder allowing me to keep my back straight and maximize leverage with my legs. It’s just more comfortable and easier to move panels. Also, I noticed your really nice sander. One of the things I like about your channel is that your tools are all very accessible price wise. You show that you don’t need a Festool shop to make. Nothing against Festool if I could afford them, I’d probably have some. So, I’m thinking that sander really must be worth it in comparison to say the Ryobi or Rigid brands you typically use. Can you talk about it sometime in a future video? Thx again, love your channel.
Thank you so much! Yes, actually Kreg did give me one of those carriers and I use it quite a bit. I had left it in my garage and didn't want to go get it here haha. it definitely makes carrying them easier, but it still doesn't help getting them up on the workbench...pros and cons. So about the sander...happy to share my thoughts. I had a mirka sander and it died last fall (it only lasted about two years which was disappointing considering the price tag). I didn't want to invest big money in another fancy sander to only last a couple years, SO I purchased (with my own money) a Bosch orbital sander (I think it was like $120). And it worked perfectly fine and I would recommend it. However, a couple months later, SurfPrep sent me this sander, but the vacuum was on backorder so they didn't send that. After using the sander without the vacuum for a little bit, it was VERY apparent the vacuum was a necessity. This sander definitely removes material well, so it is incredibly dusty. So when the vacuums came back in stock, I did spend my own money to buy the vacuum to go with the sander because I felt it was worth it and I've been using that system the last couple months. I will say from my experience, it's way better than the mirka (and the whole system is cheaper, too, I believe) that I had. So if I had to recommend a "fancy" sander, I'd definitely go with SurfPrep. But, if it were to die and I had to start over again, I'd probably just go back to my Bosch because I have a hard time spending a lot of money on sanding tools--they're just not the most exciting tool in the shop.

Excellent work you're one of my favorites to watch I honestly love when you post new videos because the things you build are most practical to most people I find. One question and sorry I know you've answered this in a video before but I can't remember which one it was a few years back. How do you screw in the pocket hole joints without clamping you always seem to make it work and they never shift on you. Where are you putting the pressure to keep the wood from slipping what's your trick! Part of me thinks you just have awesome grip strength from all the projects you make lol!!!

Oh man, I almost didn't even notice the sock monkey hat! I've always wondered if pocket screwing two pieces of plywood together like that was viable and sturdy. It must be, the way you were dancing with that giantly wide panel. The spray gun thing is a tough one. I've got a Fuji Q5. The thing about a project like this is it would take you like three minutes to spray it, and then 20 minutes to clean the gun. But then, is that still less time than brushing and rolling? Probably, I think. And if the paint will dry fast enough, you can leave the paint in the gun for a few hours between coats.
The panel seemed fine for this situation. But, it was also reinforced by attaching it to the bench and then adding the trim. I think whether pocket hole screwing large panels of plywood is viable would depend on the situation it’s being used for. In this case, it wasn’t really a critical structural piece…it just made it easier to attach the trim if they were secured together. But that’s just my rambling thoughts haha. Yeah I’ve debated a lot on the sprayer. I used to have one years ago and didn’t really love using it. So I’ve stuck to brush and roll. It takes longer from start to finish, but usually I’m doing something else between coats so it doesn’t really matter. I paint maybe 1/5 projects, so when I have to, I just turn on the radio and make it as bearable as possible haha. I also don’t like to tape stuff off 🤣🙈
I bought and tried a Wagner paint sprayer that I picked up at Home Deport several years ago. I used it twice and the clean-up was a huge pain to clean it all out and clean up paint from the nozzle. Plus, I had difficulty dialing in the sprayer pattern to get an even spray coat with a fine mist. I gave the Wagner to my brother-in-law and I'm not even sure he has ever used it. I have a lot of talents, but using paint sprayers is not one of them. The end result just wasn't worth my time as I am already pretty good with good ole rollers and brushes that I just toss when done. Maybe I should try something other than the Wagner some day and it might be a better experience?
@@aytviewer2421 spraying with any kind of HVLP system, and getting great results, is all a matter of paint viscosity. I have a very high end Fuji Q5, and even if I'm spraying Sherwin William Emerald pain, I still have to thin it with a little water to get it thin enough to go on without orange peel. Those wagner style HVLP system, where the motor and the nozzle are one part, require thinning even more, because they don't have that much power to atomize the paint. It took me a lot of experimenting to get to where I can get a good finish every time, but now I've for it dialed in (including cleaning) , and I don't dread painting so much any more. But I still don't love it, either lol.
I admire your ability to make pocket holes look so good! How do you keep your pieces from moving on you when you're joining a couple panels and holding by hand? Mine always seem to shift on me by 1/16" if they're not clamped.

Thanks so much! I love my Ryobi cordless circ saw. I had the older version for years and loved it but recently upgraded to the “HP” version that they have now. It’s a great little saw. They don’t pay me to use it or to say that, so if I wanted to switch, I can. But I don’t haha. Definitely recommend it. I have the 7 1/4” one

Thanks so much! Haha, I worked with my dad a LOT in high school (and still some today) and I still to this day don't understand the "why" behind that rule, but I follow it haha. Lucy and Bubs get along well. I've had Bubby (and his sister) for about 7 years and Lou for about 6 . She has been good with him, but he is an instigator and I have to mediate every now and then ha. His sister cat (Girly) was his playmate until this summer when she passed away, so since then, he hangs around a lot more and tries to play with Lou.

I’ve linked the one i have in the tools list in the video description. I have had it maybe 5 years now (I’ve lost count) and I still like it. It cuts square if it’s set up right and has a good blade. Blade condition and quality make a big difference. If my cuts start getting off, it’s usually a sign I need to replace the blade
You keep stating you don’t know why people want to know how you do certain steps. Well remember that some folks may choose you to follow for their DIY protects. The more details you provide the more it will help them
Thank you for reminding me. I aim to help and inspire others. In many cases, I feel unqualified to share my “expertise” as I’m not an expert. In this case…painting…I know that my process is simplistic and many professionals will make it more complicated and say there is much more to it. Happy New Year. I am late to the party seeing this video. I watched your drawer series and a learned a TON! I still have one question though: I am building a similar project as this storage bench. Total length is 58", I want 3 drawers which the opening is 18 5/16" each space. I want 10 inch drawer slide but would love to use a face frame like yours. My question is, how can I accomplish this if I want inset drawers? Is that even possible? Sorry if it is a dummie question but this is my first time building a drawer and I am confused as you can see. Or better yet, how would you tackle the project if you were to install drawers? Thanks!

If the face frame is 1x3, that means you have to center it between the ply behind it which will overlap it. Wouldn't that be wasted space between the face frame and the 3/4 plywood? Sorry if this makes not sense to you.
@greivinvega2990 yes, you’d need to install a spacer block to mount the slides on so that they’re not “behind” the face frame. That would be “wasted space” but that’s just a consequence of using face frames. You could skip the face frame in the front and go frameless instead if you want to maximize drawer space.
I want to see your painting process because I hate painting too. I figure if anyone will make it easy, fast, and nice it would be someone else who hates it.

So I can buy a circular saw and this saw guide to get the straight cuts on the playwood done. I may also buy a mitter saw for specific cuts. I will also need an orbital sander and maybe a nail gun (but I have no idea which one to buy and which nails to use yet). I will also try to buy the pocket hole jig. I saw several videos where people use pocket holes with screws to put the pieces together rather than using cam lock fasteners. Pocket holes probably make the final product sturdier and if the idea is not do disassemble the piece of furniture in the future, then I guess pocket holes would be the best choice. So, I will now plan on what tools and materials to buy. Your video was the motivation I needed. This will be my very first project of this kind. And I want to keep going and build more pieces of furniture and other things made of wood. Thank you for sharing any detail you can. You wouldn't believe how much your videos help DIY folks like me. Your explanations are better than many that I saw from professionals. Keep doing the great work that you do. Much peace and health to you and your family. Thank you!

I like it. If you don't have wood filler and want to fill holes on a piece you're painting, you can use drywall joint compound. I liked seeing the painting part. I think it's not just for tips and tricks, like the sanding, but it's also weirdly satisfying . . . like pressure washing and lawn mowing videos.

Shara, you surprised me by releasing this video on Friday instead of Saturday morning. I'm glad you included your "boring" paint process for you as my Wife has been talking to me about painting the pole barn and house most of this Winter. I'll be sharing with her. I'm working on my "built-in" office and it's starting to come together which is really exciting here. Following your lead I ordered 10 pairs of drawer glides (need 4 pairs for this project) visited you video on how to build drawers. I guess I have my own style for drawers but a refresher course certainly was helpful so thank you so much.
I bought a thermometer for my shop for $8.00. When it says 40 degrees inside the shop that's good thing! Next week it's going to get bitter cold here so progress may get slowed on the project. Despite the excitement around the building process my attention will get divided between the chickens, dog, and my Son's dog whom we're taking care of this weekend. So I'm not a bit surprised to see Bud and Lucy in your video's and your workshop. It's a dog's (or cat's world) don't you know.

Aw yay a new full length Shara build! I love the board-and batten style of this! I believe a lot of us would just as soon snap our fingers at the end of the build and have the finish magically appear, but your finishing process is simple, sound and straightforward... and no one can argue with the results. I personally love the color choices (I suspect that if this was for your home, it would be rockin' that black and white vibe though!). p.s. I spy a kitty tail at 5:50...😊

I really appreciate that! I always try to keep things simple and approachable and not make things more complicated than they need to be. Dang Shara, this video was just full of gold for me! From the cat attacking your process, a little ride on the struggle bus, and being forced to paint for us (dance monkey, dance!). You know, you could always get a sprayer if you don’t like painting that badly! (I love the description of what the thought of cleaning a sprayer makes you feel!).
Now to the seriousness, this is a project that I am seriously going to have to hide from my wife! Not only has she been telling me she wants something just like this in our entry, but green is even her favorite color! 🙊 So, just for this week, I’m going to hide you from my wife, lest I find myself heading out for a couple sheets of plywood! I looked at the blog foe this video to see what exact plywood you use, because it looks better than the one I get from HD. I see you use the better kind, birch. I always go for the cheapest, but may switch to this one, it looks much nicer.
I almost always use birch plywood (or maple if they’re out of birch). It’s my go to!

Another great project. As I watched you handling those plywood panels I wondered if Kreg hadn’t provided you their carrier. I finally decided to try one and it helps quite a bit. With that I can can position the carrier in the center of the panel, then lift and support near my shoulder allowing me to keep my back straight and maximize leverage with my legs. It’s just more comfortable and easier to move panels. Also, I noticed your really nice sander. One of the things I like about your channel is that your tools are all very accessible price wise. You show that you don’t need a Festool shop to make. Nothing against Festool if I could afford them, I’d probably have some. So, I’m thinking that sander really must be worth it in comparison to say the Ryobi or Rigid brands you typically use. Can you talk about it sometime in a future video? Thx again, love your channel.
Thank you so much! Yes, actually Kreg did give me one of those carriers and I use it quite a bit. I had left it in my garage and didn't want to go get it here haha. it definitely makes carrying them easier, but it still doesn't help getting them up on the workbench...pros and cons.
So about the sander...happy to share my thoughts. I had a mirka sander and it died last fall (it only lasted about two years which was disappointing considering the price tag). I didn't want to invest big money in another fancy sander to only last a couple years, SO I purchased (with my own money) a Bosch orbital sander (I think it was like $120). And it worked perfectly fine and I would recommend it. However, a couple months later, SurfPrep sent me this sander, but the vacuum was on backorder so they didn't send that. After using the sander without the vacuum for a little bit, it was VERY apparent the vacuum was a necessity. This sander definitely removes material well, so it is incredibly dusty. So when the vacuums came back in stock, I did spend my own money to buy the vacuum to go with the sander because I felt it was worth it and I've been using that system the last couple months. I will say from my experience, it's way better than the mirka (and the whole system is cheaper, too, I believe) that I had. So if I had to recommend a "fancy" sander, I'd definitely go with SurfPrep. But, if it were to die and I had to start over again, I'd probably just go back to my Bosch because I have a hard time spending a lot of money on sanding tools--they're just not the most exciting tool in the shop.

Excellent work you're one of my favorites to watch I honestly love when you post new videos because the things you build are most practical to most people I find. One question and sorry I know you've answered this in a video before but I can't remember which one it was a few years back. How do you screw in the pocket hole joints without clamping you always seem to make it work and they never shift on you. Where are you putting the pressure to keep the wood from slipping what's your trick! Part of me thinks you just have awesome grip strength from all the projects you make lol!!!

I've always wondered if pocket screwing two pieces of plywood together like that was viable and sturdy. It must be, the way you were dancing with that giantly wide panel.
The spray gun thing is a tough one. I've got a Fuji Q5. The thing about a project like this is it would take you like three minutes to spray it, and then 20 minutes to clean the gun. But then, is that still less time than brushing and rolling? Probably, I think. And if the paint will dry fast enough, you can leave the paint in the gun for a few hours between coats.
The panel seemed fine for this situation. But, it was also reinforced by attaching it to the bench and then adding the trim. I think whether pocket hole screwing large panels of plywood is viable would depend on the situation it’s being used for. In this case, it wasn’t really a critical structural piece…it just made it easier to attach the trim if they were secured together. But that’s just my rambling thoughts haha.
Yeah I’ve debated a lot on the sprayer. I used to have one years ago and didn’t really love using it. So I’ve stuck to brush and roll. It takes longer from start to finish, but usually I’m doing something else between coats so it doesn’t really matter. I paint maybe 1/5 projects, so when I have to, I just turn on the radio and make it as bearable as possible haha. I also don’t like to tape stuff off 🤣🙈
I bought and tried a Wagner paint sprayer that I picked up at Home Deport several years ago. I used it twice and the clean-up was a huge pain to clean it all out and clean up paint from the nozzle. Plus, I had difficulty dialing in the sprayer pattern to get an even spray coat with a fine mist. I gave the Wagner to my brother-in-law and I'm not even sure he has ever used it. I have a lot of talents, but using paint sprayers is not one of them. The end result just wasn't worth my time as I am already pretty good with good ole rollers and brushes that I just toss when done. Maybe I should try something other than the Wagner some day and it might be a better experience?
@@aytviewer2421 spraying with any kind of HVLP system, and getting great results, is all a matter of paint viscosity. I have a very high end Fuji Q5, and even if I'm spraying Sherwin William Emerald pain, I still have to thin it with a little water to get it thin enough to go on without orange peel.
Those wagner style HVLP system, where the motor and the nozzle are one part, require thinning even more, because they don't have that much power to atomize the paint.
It took me a lot of experimenting to get to where I can get a good finish every time, but now I've for it dialed in (including cleaning) , and I don't dread painting so much any more. But I still don't love it, either lol.

I admire your ability to make pocket holes look so good! How do you keep your pieces from moving on you when you're joining a couple panels and holding by hand? Mine always seem to shift on me by 1/16" if they're not clamped.

Thanks so much! I love my Ryobi cordless circ saw. I had the older version for years and loved it but recently upgraded to the “HP” version that they have now. It’s a great little saw. They don’t pay me to use it or to say that, so if I wanted to switch, I can. But I don’t haha. Definitely recommend it. I have the 7 1/4” one

I’ve linked the one i have in the tools list in the video description. I have had it maybe 5 years now (I’ve lost count) and I still like it. It cuts square if it’s set up right and has a good blade. Blade condition and quality make a big difference. If my cuts start getting off, it’s usually a sign I need to replace the blade
@@WoodshopDiaries which blade do you use? And is it for cutting plywood or other wood as well?
I use a 100 tooth finish blade on it. They’re pricey but they cut SO smooth. High tooth count finish blades are exactly what you want for plywood.

Thank you for reminding me. I aim to help and inspire others. In many cases, I feel unqualified to share my “expertise” as I’m not an expert. In this case…painting…I know that my process is simplistic and many professionals will make it more complicated and say there is much more to it. So I hesitate to share that since I don’t have a lot to share.

Happy New Year. I am late to the party seeing this video. I watched your drawer series and a learned a TON! I still have one question though: I am building a similar project as this storage bench. Total length is 58", I want 3 drawers which the opening is 18 5/16" each space. I want 10 inch drawer slide but would love to use a face frame like yours. My question is, how can I accomplish this if I want inset drawers? Is that even possible? Sorry if it is a dummie question but this is my first time building a drawer and I am confused as you can see. Or better yet, how would you tackle the project if you were to install drawers? Thanks!

My only confusion here is where to mount the drawer slides with a face frame? If the face frame is 1x3, that means you have to center it between the ply behind it which will overlap it. Wouldn't that be wasted space between the face frame and the 3/4 plywood? Sorry if this makes not sense to you.
@greivinvega2990 yes, you’d need to install a spacer block to mount the slides on so that they’re not “behind” the face frame. That would be “wasted space” but that’s just a consequence of using face frames. You could skip the face frame in the front and go frameless instead if you want to maximize drawer space.
