The fact that the gate was so baffling is hilarious. One other method (at least on the Apple version) was to go into your fight stance so that one foot JUST breaks the plane of the gate and it closes, then sidle through.
In the version of the game I played, you walk up to the gate and kick, let it come down and immediate run through right as it comes back up. the version I played also had a final-boss called Akuma, who you had to fight after fighting his pet bird. I actually thought the bird was tougher.

I don't know if it was meant to be funny, but I think it was the most hilarious game I've seen in a long time. The not-shown 'super duper secret' ending at the start of the game, punching a bird in the face, running into a gate to have it shut in your face, the multiple coloured fighters with various different head deformities/hats. I especially like the purple viking ninja. Comedy gold.

She just kicks you right in the balls. Instant death. It's uh...an ancient, secret technique in the princess' family. And also, um, you're the only guy in Japan who doesn't wear a cup? That's why she can't escape on her own.
The gate is MUCH easier to pass on the normal versions of the game. You can fake out the gate by edging up to it, then kicking, which will cause it to slam down and miss you. This solution, which is the intended one, does NOT WORK on the nes version, so you have to do what this guy did. stop short while going at a full run from the right distance.
fark me dead i played this when i was 5 just could NOT figure out how to play it... now i need to find the other 2 games which i couldn't finish when i was 5 and my life is complete xD
I finished this game on a Apple II a very looooong time ago. You have to disable the attack instance when you save the girl, otherwise she will kill you! :D
