I have lucky got a strategy guy and beat this game when I am young (about 34 years ago I think ). Level 1 is a piece of cake, but I am stuck in Level 2 for about a year and fail to go beyond the monster duma down in the well, AFAIR. Then after a struggle I got to Level 3 and my skills become better and got pass the Level 3 Boss. And immediately in that play I get the final boss down and beat the game.
I rented this about 15 years ago and played it for 3 straight days without turning off my NES before finally beating it. I wouldn't have guessed the game could be beaten in under 30 minutes - even with an emulator. Great work.
I always loved this game as a kid, even though I had no idea what to do in it, and it was way too hard for me lol. Nice to see it again after all this time, and finally get to see the end :)
I am literally speechless, I've spent so long playing this game. If I played all video games like that, no one can say you spent too much time playing video games.
I remember renting this game as a kid feeling accomplished that I got as far as the well. This was after using a strategy guide, which was a really rare thing back then. There were 2 books, Red and Green. One of them explained how to... well, play the first part of the game.
seems there are different slight variations of this game having different enemies etc..while same name maybe? confusing to know which version you'd be getting except maybe the yr of it difrenciates
If you came to this video after watching Angry Video Game Nerd. Copy and paste this. I love secrets... but not when the game basically consists of them.
And it's one of Japan's favorite Famicom titles. It also was featured in the popular Japanese show titled Game Center CX (known outside of Japan as Retro Game Master).
From someone who put way too much time into this game as a kid - There are four final bosses in different rooms on the top floor. Only one is real, and the real one is random from game to game. Since the video creator manipulated luck for fastest time, they picked the correct boss on the first try. The outside platform jumping in the video is possible through mastery. There's a way for Milon to squeak out a bit of extra jump height to get on those upper platforms.
That is useful. That number is the initial count of collected notes inside the first musical box mini-game you enter after you continue your game when you are dead.
I've been wondering for the past 20 years how to proceed beyond the bottom door level. not impressed with those secret passages like how does one even figure that out? milon's 'secret' castle is an understatement. but thank you youtube and hisatoki for unravelling the mystery.
If you came to this video after watching Angry Video Game Nerd and you did some research on Wikipedia. Copy and paste this. just had to try to see a speedrun xD
Oh man. I remember this game from when I was a kid. I was terrified of it because of the level in the well where there are those demon guys and everything's on fire, lol.
I appreciate your info on that. This game seems either popular or infamous in Japan. It was used in some Japanese fan-made creations like the Michael Quest animation and Hatsune Miku versions of the game's soundtrack. The Game Boy version, like most other Game Boy counterparts of NES games, seems superior, although they lack color. E.T. and Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 weren't the only ones that caused the 1983 video game crash, there were some others like Strawberry Shortcake for Atari 2600.
i dont care if i did not finish this game... i just love the graphics its easy to the eye... the color combination is way ahead of time... last time i played this game it was like 15 years ago...
God damn this game!!! I could never beat it!!! I never figured out how to get out of the infinite stairwell tower, plus the well and the bosses scared piss out of me! I was six. Great work, you got this down to a science.
i definitely agree. i played this game with my brother when i was about 7 years old and even though it took a LONG time, we eventually figured out what to do in certain areas. did we ever beat the game? no, it was too hard for us. but it was definitely fun. we especially loved the music from the bonus stage!! :)
so many hours spent running around on the first floor trying to figure out what to do. and to think it was one simple door that misteriesly appears. i figured it would be something like that but DAM!!!
This game was fun, yet confusing as heck. That and without tools to assist you the enemies later on can be very challanging. Good run through, you make it look easy, but without tools this game is pretty hard.
Yes, I frequently saw Spelunker, but it actually started on the Atari 2600. Other games I seen Japanese gamers liked a lot are Action 52, The Cheetamen II, Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, Atlantis no Nazo, Ikki (known outside of Japan as Farmer's Rebellion or Boomerang), Challenger, Takeshi no Chosenjo, The Wing of Madoola, some anime/manga-based games and several others.
i agree. i found most of the hidden doors when i was a child and my mind wasn't corrupted by being told certain things weren't possible, but i was only able to beat it later on in life when i discovered nnesterj and save states.
This game almost put me into therapy when I was about 12. I swear, it was so freakin' hard because of all of the secret doorways, etc. I probably only made it about a quarter of the way through.
Most people who thought Captain Falcon never fought before his appearance in the SSB series didn't read or didn't believe in what the SNES F-ZERO manual's comic said before the SSB series was born.
We rented this when we were kids, and what do you know, we never got past the first level. Maybe because nobody would ever figure it out with a walkthrough!
If the NES Contra, the original Castlevania, some Ninja Gaiden games and the R-TYPE series are difficult and gamers like them, then why dislike Milon's Secret Castle, even when you want something very challenging?
@braaaainz It's Galaga-style where you can shoot again as soon as the last one disappears. Sit right next to the enemy with a turbo controller and it's easy.

I've always loved this game. Thanks for the video. It was kickinrad.

Oh, and video description should say tool assisted. Its misleading.

Best. Comment. Ever.

that game is absolutely impossible to beat without any walkthrough, people wasted so much time trying to beat it

I know what game is even OVER 9000!!!times harder than this and its solomon's key.
i'm wondering how does the awful cute hudson bee get into every hudson soft game?
seems there are different slight variations of this game having different enemies etc..while same name maybe? confusing to know which version you'd be getting except maybe the yr of it difrenciates
Ah, the day when I discovered that isolated blocks could be pushed to reveal shops...that was a glorious day indeed.

I hated this game as a child and I still own the cartridge today and still haven't bothered to beat it.
That is useful.

This guy's a machine

this is tool assisted, but awesome
No it's not. If you look closely at the fake walls, you'll see how different the sprites look compared to the real walls.
Oh man. I remember this game from when I was a kid. I was terrified of it because of the level in the well where there are those demon guys and everything's on fire, lol.
Oh my Gosh. That is awesome. I have owned this game for 20+ years and have never gotten past level one. My hat goes off to the guy who did this.

I love how the store is in Japanese, and the Ending is in English.
Just how many people did they think would have the patience to play a game this confusing??
this game is some serious fuck and its impossible without help
TAS actually means "Tool assisted Speedrun"
Oh well, he's great.
Good god... you got that right... This game used to be so frustrating.. I still have not beaten it...

RIP Hudson
You must be the god of gaming.
one of the first hardest game i ever beat on my own, i was so proud of my self
it's impressive to watch this speed run. At the same time it's also sickening that someone put this much time into such a cryptic game.
God damn this game!!! I could never beat it!!!
I never figured out how to get out of the infinite stairwell tower, plus the well and the bosses scared piss out of me! I was six.
Great work, you got this down to a science.
Definitely some Turbo action on that controller/emulator, but damn, well done! And way to play it close with like 1 life bar left most of the time!
Awesome!
Fucking hard frustrating game with hypnotizing music. lol. Owned.

Im impressed
I've watched this speedrun about 10 times now and my mouth is wide open every time I finish it.
I don't see what AVGN's problem was. This game doesn't take long to beat all all.
so many hours spent running around on the first floor trying to figure out what to do. and to think it was one simple door that misteriesly appears. i figured it would be something like that but DAM!!!

Talk about cryptic...
@HubbaBubba9849 It does have a continue BUT THEY MADE IT HARD TO FIGURE OUT
Woah, this game is cryptic as fuck.

In Japan, this game was successful, and had other sequels on Gameboy & Super Famicom.
SO underrated...
oh.. my... god...
holy crap man awesome***

That was Chuck Norris playing the first time he turned the console on and of course he never heard of the game too.
That's some insane gameplay dude.. that's a good tip for bosses: Attack head on.. "poppopopopopppp"... whatever noise it makes when it dies.. lol
NICE PLAY
man your a MONSTER!!! I beat this game but not that fast!!! :-0
Yeah, thanks Milion, i guess...
