I think the internal ND filter is just fine in this price range. It helps to keep the shutter speed away from crazy fast. If you absolutely have to follow a certain shutter angle, then you're not going to use a consumer compact camera.

Price point compare to what you get with such a great portability does matter and this could be one of the reason why it exists.
I just bought it months ago even though I've heard about ZV-1 II. It serves all of my needs such as taking photo with friends and family, doing some shots while traveling. I rarely use it for videos so there is no issues about battery or heating.

I still love it. Love it for the flip screen, the features, and it’s size. I used to have the canon m50, and I had no clue what I wanted to do. Now that I know what I want to, I decided to get a point and shoot camera, and the zv-1 is the perfect one

I have the cam too and love it! Two options to add in firmware to make it a great for street photography:
    1. shutter speed = minimum shutter speed
    2. assign to red movie button: toggle through a set of preselected modes (such as P and S)
Battery life is totally fine for me for photo. Can last several days.

Very much enjoying all your ZV-1 coverage Jack. There aren't that many photo oriented videos on it, your takes convinced me to get it for both purposes. Smallrig L bracket and Gizmon WA as well - thanks.
2024 BTW: can't find anything else. Canon M50 or M6 with a EF-M 22mm came close but have the 30 minute video limit.
ZV-1F is (decent) CDAF, great touchscreen and wide angle with filter ring but no zoom nor RAW.
ZV-1 II 18-50mm without OIS is no-go for my use.
ZV-E10 and lenses are at least 2x price and 4x size to get 1.4 or 1.8 at wide angle. Plus rolling shutter.
DJI pocket 3 is getting more out of the 1" sensor but no zoom either and tiny LCD for photos.
Maybe there are some almost real good phone rigs and lens attachments, haven't really looked for that.

ZV-1 M2 isn't ruled out anymore btw if/when I'll circle back to pocketable point and shoot with superior AF. And maybe Sony upgrades the M1 firmware later on as a treat.
Have to do a proper G80 video test also, if Panasonic DFD CDAF is usable for most sessions after all there's only pocketable reasons left to have both. And I LOVE the G80 for stills already and am keen to simplify my kit as much as possible, so...

One year later, the Sony ZV-1 has become one of my favourite cameras. In this video, I'm sharing with you my thoughts on this camera and how I've used it over the past year.
I've had a few people mention the photos, settings etc. I shoot manual mode and make sure the shutter stays above 1/150 - ideally around 1/200. I also make sure the ISO doesn't go over 1000. Aperture usually f/1.8.

Hey there, I have bought this camera in 2020 already used, and 2,5 years later I am still loving it! :)
However I have two questions, maybe you can help me: which mode do you use when recording b-roll with it?
Especially when walking. It tends to loose the focus and blur a bit when I walk with it, and also because of the shaking it is not so optimal, so I am thinking about getting a gimbal to it, do you have any suggestions for a super simple gimbal without much setting up and balancing out? I am way too lazy for that, I have purchased a Zhiyun Crane M2 but I couldn`t deal with and had to send it back, I need something way simpler than that, like a phone gimbal is :D

Great video Jack, looking back on this. I have a dilemma. I am not a professional photographer but I am a definite point and shoot guy. I have the ZV-1 (I upgraded from an earlier superzoom Sony) and my phone, a OnePlus Nord 2T currently. Now that phones like the Pixel 7 or the iPhone 14 Pro are very close to cameras, I was thinking if I shouls sell the ZV-1 and just use a phone - the present one or a new one. When I go out, whether that is street or a trip, I tend not to wanna take out the ZV-1 from my bag, I am just happy with whatever I shoot with the camera. Most importantly, video stabilization is better and everything is just really point and shoot on the phones. But when I shoot some photos on the Sony, they just look a wee bit smoother so I'd probably regret selling the camera. What do you think? Can a phone totally replace a ZV-1-like camera for a freak like me :D ?

Hey! Great question. Personally I don't think phone cameras are anywhere near the zv1 yet. The 1 inch sensor is definitely an improvement over any phone I think. Plus phones have so much software driven alterations (HDR, sharpness etc) I just find the zv1 images more appealing visually.

ZV-1 has an advantage from a phone if you want to get serious at photography, it can use flash at sync speed up to 1/2000, not even high end interchangeable lens camera has that feature except Medium Format which costs more than an arm and a leg. Phone almost can't use flash at all because they use electronic shutter. Ultimately it is quite a specific use case, but i feel that no one talks a lot about this unique feature that you can find in a lot of pocket camera that can help it differentiate from the market.

I have to offer a bit of a rebuttal on the ZV-1 ND filter. After four years of using this camera and traveling the world shooting with it, I have to disagree. I think the ND is one its greatest strengths. Is it as deep as the filters I have for my FX30? No, but I find it to be very usable - even while shooting in the desert of Saudi Arabia. The RX100 VII is a better camera than the ZV1 in most ways. The only reason I keep my ZV1 is product showcase and the wide angle 1.8 aperture. But that represents less than 5% of recording. 95% of the time, the RX100 VII is first choice. I have a glue-on filter ring on both cameras for wider angle, and variable ND. The EVF alone is good enough reason to get the RX 100 VII.
A much better choice, that also has product showcase, and can use lenses wider and faster, is the ZV-E10. The ZV-E10 plus an RX100 VII is an almost perfect combination that covers both small size and vlogging goodness. The ZV1 doesn't really factor into this. I keep mine because I already bought it (before the ZV-E10 was released) but if I could go back in time I would not have bought it, and simply waited for the ZV-E10 instead.
Owning all three cameras gives me the ability to compare them long term. ZV1 is in last place as far as I am concerned.

For anything indoor I would say no, because the lens is only a max f1.8 and that's a wide 24mm. If you wanted more of a 35mm or 50mm you're going to be bumping the ISO a lot as the aperture will be around 2-2.8. in this instance if recommend something like the Zv-E10 and a fast lens like the 28mm f2 or even the 20mm 1.8.
