I bought it as a pocket street photography camera a few months ago. Best decision I ever made. To me its the control's you have that make it a step up from a smart phone. Its easier to be quick and intentional with artistic decision's, plus no need for downgraded digital zoom.
I bought one of these several months ago and couldn’t agree more! I’ve taken it to concerts, festivals, and several vacations. The smaller form factor also makes it much easier to pack for trips, a lot easier than my A7 set up for sure.
Great video! Appreciate the focus on photography, composition, lightning, not just video for the ZV-1. Having trouble deciding between compact cameras, I have the ZV-1, and the RX100VII on my list mostly for photography with the occasional dip into video. Any thoughts or other camera recommendations?
If you can afford the RX100 VII, that is definitely the superior choice compared to the ZV-1. But if neither of them satisfy you, one other point-and-shoot I'd recommend is the Lumix LX100. Larger sensor than the ZV-1 because it's a full micro 4/3, a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 Leica lens, has an EVF like the RX100, and also shoots in 4K. Only downside, to me, is that it's worth $800 and I don't have that type of money 😅
Hi man, thank you for this video. Prob i will choose for this one, also for the cost respect other compact cameras. I have just a doubt: I’m used to Fujifilm and having ready good jpegs. How do you manage the postproduction? Shot in raw and the postproduce with Lightroom? Thank u
Yessirr! Shoot in raw -> quick adjustments in Lightroom. I wouldn't worry too much about missing out on Fuji recipes tbh. If you don't want to adjust individual photos, there are numerous Lr presets online that mimic specific film looks. Some free, some you have to pay for, but all ultimately cheaper than any Fuji camera. I downloaded a free Porta 400 recipe somewhere. I don't use it very often because I have my own preset for my style but it seems to work really well.
Hi!! Thanks for the informative video 😁 Could you kindly advise if I should get the canon powershot sx 740 hs or the Sony zv1? I’m a beginner, and would like to use the camera for causal photography. Thanks!
It really depends on what you value more. The Sony ZV-1 has a larger sensor and a wider maximum aperture which basically just means it takes better photos in low light (i.e. indoors or late afternoon to night). The SX740, on the other hand, has waaaaaay more range but sacrifices aperture and sensor size. This basically just means it's significantly better for subjects that are further away but it's also worse in low light. It compensates for this with a pop-up flash to use indoors but the effects of that are largely subjective. In a nutshell, get the Sony ZV-1 if you don't need the extensive range and see yourself taking more photos in low light. Get the SX740 if you prefer an "all-in-one" camera to use during the day. Hope this helps!
Just ordered it for 300€ used like new. I cant stand my phone pictures anymore... so i hope this is a good companion for my FF. Thx for showing some examples.
@@CheapButGoodPhotography Short Answer: Yes. The final pictures just look better. Reasoning: - better Ergonomics - easier/more convenient to shoot RAW - the Aperture is not fixed - has optical Zoom - better low light Performance with moving Objects I don't know if the pictures are technically better.. but we just had more better photos and way more fun making them. A big benefit is that i can safely use special Focal lenghts (like 16mm) with my FF without sacrificing the more normal ones like 24/35/70 (ok 85 would be the "normal" one but 70 comes close). I am now looking for a nice Tele :D
Good question! And it depends. Most times, I really just shoot in Aperture priority, widest aperture, Auto ISO range 125 to 6400, AF-C, wide focus area, and eye/face detect set to on. I find that the camera's face/eye detect AF is still pretty solid even in low light. But, if it does have trouble focusing on faces (or if there's no face to focus on at all), I just tap on the screen to use single-point AF. This is true for virtually any camera I use and test out, btw. Not just the ZV-1. If manual focusing is what you meant with your question, though, I practically never use MF unless it's a self-portrait. Single-point AF saves my butt nearly every time. 😅
I haven't used the RX100 yet so I can't really get you a proper comparison, but I think the ZV-1 is pretty easy. I set the down button to switch between aperture and shutter speed, and the right button to adjust my ISO. The dial, of course, adjusts either of the trio. Everything is basically a button away. There's no front lens dial but I do get what you mean (I think). The G7X Mark II I'm currently testing out has it and it makes it more intuitive for photography.
It is smaller and shorter than an iPhone, but its thicker. It does not even fit to my outfit pocket, unless I wear a tactical vest. But it's a great camera, it's a plus point if you have an iPhone or high end android as a companion for family time, concert and any events
It's definitely thicker, yes. I'd say about 3 iPhones with a case thick. Thanks for pointing that out! A shame it doesn't fit your pockets, though. It's always fit on mine no matter what I wear. Maybe that's just me wearing loose clothing all the time, though. Thanks for stopping by!
Sorry I didn't have that in the video. But, generally speaking: Photography settings: - I'm generally in aperture priority. ISO: Auto (6400 max); Exposure: -0.3; Rear dial set to control the aperture; Creative style: Standard with -3 contrast, -2 saturation, -2 sharpness; Focus set to AF-C, Wide, Single shooting. - P.S.: I switch to Manual mode when I notice the shutter speed is getting too low, but largely the same general settings. Video settings: - Varies largely but, generally speaking: Manual mode, Shutter speed x2 my frame rate; Aperture set to its widest (except if shooting in bright daylight); ND set to Auto, and WB at 5500. - My ISO depends on my exposure and whether or not I'm using log profiles. If using log profiles, I dial in my ISO to get +0.7 exposure. Without log profiles, I dial my ISO get to -0.3 exposure. Hope this helps!
@@CheapButGoodPhotography The guy said that he got the camera as a birthday gift. Maybe that's why it's so cheap. I'll definitely but it. Thanks for the video.
How well does the video performs esp compared to pro iPhones (standard and log)? I was considering the rx100 vii, but it’s lil expensive than would like it to 😢
I don't generally take videos with my iPhone so I unfortunately can't give you an accurate answer. Sorry about that. I can tell you this, though: 1) I shot two clips with my iPhone on another video because I (stupidly) already put my camera back in the bag. I hate it. Absolutely detest the damn things. There's a heavy green tint on everything but most especially the highlights. Color correcting made it worse because the footage just fell apart like drunk people playing jenga. Here's a link to the video, and the clips I'm referring to start at 13:16. ua-cam.com/video/wNa5qGehht4/v-deo.html 2) Log profiles on the ZV-1 (s-log 2 and s-log 3) will have you locked at a minimum ISO of 1000. Limiting relative to other options but totally workable, especially indoors. The in-built ND filter comes in very handy. 3) I'm not very skilled at color grading. I might not be the best person to answer video-related questions. 😅 If I may ask, though, what budget are you looking to be at? What are you planning to do with your camera? Asking only to see if I can recommend stuff.
@@CheapButGoodPhotography I'm in the market for a pocketable camera under $1200 that I can use for day-to-day shooting (both photos and videos). I was considering the RX100, but it's priced much higher in the used market than I'd like. I already own a Sigma fp with 35mm and 20-60mm lenses, but that's more of a full rig type of setup for my creative business.
In that case, the ZV-1 is right up your alley. Quick pros and cons list for your use-case: PROS: - Great specs for video. 4K, Log profiles, Built-in ND filter, gyro data for stabilizing in post. - Better than phones at taking photos. Wide aperture lens for low light, versatile zoom range, shoots raw. CONS: - Log profiles have a minimum ISO of 1000. Not so good if you're looking for the cleanest footage and color-grading is your thing. Without using the log profiles, though, footage comes out pretty clean--just not as flexible in terms of color grading. - Purple-fringing in photos but, really... not that big a deal thanks to Lightroom. - No built-in flash (if flash photography is your thing).
Definitely the Olympus. It has a larger sensor but, more importantly, it gives you the option to get a much better lens than what the ZV-1 offers. For the used price of the ZV-1 (~$500), you can get an E-M5 and a 25mm f/1.8 lens in good-excellent condition. It still depends on what you're going to be using them for, though. Purely for photography, the E-M5 is going to open more doors for you but it's definitely not a video camera, especially not in 2024. The Sony ZV-1, on the other hand, has significantly better autofocus and way better video.
