  • Scott Wimmer was supposed to start the 2000 Georgia Boot 400 ARCA RE/MAX Series race in preparation for his Busch Series debut at Daytona in February 2001. However, rain canceled ARCA qualifying. Bill Davis Racing moved the team over to the Winston Cup garage. The car was obviously very good, as Wimmer made the NAPA 500, starting 31st.
Wimmer went off-sequence on pit stops and gained the lead on lap 55. He held on to the lead for 9 laps, holding off Steve Park and had Dale Earnhardt breathing down his neck. He would fall off the leaders, but it was a very impressive performance.
Later on, it was thought he blew an engine. However, it turned out that he ran out of fuel. Wimmer would go on to finish 22nd, 3 laps down. I must say that was not a bad debut at all for someone who was only supposed to be in the ARCA race. Wimmer would eventually go on to take over the #22 Caterpillar car from Ward Burton in late 2003.

I always liked Wimmer and thought he was a lot better than he ever got credit for. Wish he could have had some better opportunities in the Cup series.

Ya I wished he done better in the cup series when he got in the catterpillar car in 2004-2005 seasons but he was in sucky equipment.

He ran very well considering the team wasn’t even ready to run the Cup race.

Unique fact: Wimmer finished last in 2000 points because of the fact he was a post entry, meaning he couldn't score any points.
This was a rule back then as I recall Jimmy Spencer in 2003 had no points for one race because of him being listed as a post entry. A goof on their end because it was around mid-season.

in case people are confused. back in this era (and up till either the car of tommorow of maybe this one) arca cars were basicaly old cup cars. engine, chassis, everything. that's why in this era, you could have wimmer do this, yates run irwin jr in a daytona race in arca before the 500 to get him approval to run the 500. you could have ganassi do the same for montoya, and petty in 79 at daytona. and i guess for adam also at charlotte. you basically put it on the entry list and brought a cup car that was a back up or something. i think they ran a different engine with a restirctor plate or a spacer but that was easy to convert over. back in this era they also did it at pocono to get young guys experience. dont' think they do that near as much any more. but back in this era it was bascially the same car with very little difference. if you're wondering why, arca was originally kind of the busch series. not maybe the feeder series necessarily but same idea. Forgot who founded arca, but he had the full support and help of bill france sr. the guy wanted a more affordable series, but get help from cup guys, and cup teams. they obviously didn't send guys to cu p as frequently as busch or trucks but they had nascar's total support, and at some point in last few years nascar also bought the rights and now arca is a nascar series. not sure all the history involved but i think that's why arca also has so many companion events, michigan (1 or both) talledega (1 or both), pocono, and daytona though in years past have been others i'm sure.
