I cannot understand why the mother wouldn’t say anything when she realized her son was safe. That is horrific 🤦♀️
She probably felt extremely guilty by then and wanted the fire fighter to have a reason to why they were there in the first place. But overall the way the relative said it was just cruel.

Some how I don’t think she knew. When you are afraid of your own child, you probably wouldn’t be looking for them. If she was at a neighbors, she probably had no idea what he had done or that he had left. Not sure though, because she was so adamant about finding him, thinking he was still in the house. Very confusing. But in any case, after he had admitted to setting the fire, he should have paid for it with life in prison. Don’t understand why so many countries don’t prosecute supposed mental health individuals! He knew what he did was wrong or he would not have fled and stayed at his uncles house. Doesn’t seem like he cared if his mother or anyone survived!!
Everything in this case disgusted me. The cars preventing the trucks to get to the house, the terrible working conditions, the lack of medical coverage, the lack of gear needed to protect these men. The fact the mother NEVER told them her son wasn’t there after she was given the information.. everything. I’m bawling

The fact that I’m 1000% sure that the neighbors heard the fire truck siren and no one got up to move their cars or to rally the neighbors to go door to door to move them. It’s sick sickening. My stomach dropped during the whole video.
@@lizzaguilar4022exactly, with so much commotion going on, all the sirens and lights you would have had to have known it was happening on your own street so to not even bother to move your car even AFTER the collapse and when there were thousands of firefighters literally digging by hand to find their fellow men, you have to be some kind of heartless, pig ignorant and evil to not bother to move your car that you had parked there illegally and that had already been partially to blame. It’s disgusting behaviour.
@@lizzaguilar4022also the sad part is that the reason they probably didn’t come out and move them was probably most likely motivated my selfishness as they all knew that what they had done was illegal and probably did not want to be seen doing the drive of shame and knew if they were caught red handed there would be repercussions. They most likely chose their own selfish needs over the lives of those who would risk their lives for them in a heartbeat, it just beggars belief.
The fact that firefighters get paid THAT MUCH LESS than doctors when they’re putting THEIR OWN LIFE in danger to save someone, makes me so sad.
Cause they don’t work every hr. Less education needed. Low skill . More risk yes.
@@MugenTJwdym they dont work every hour? She literally stated that they worked 120 hour weeks. Even doctors work less than that. And yes lesser education but risk should be paid equally, which is why construction workers get paid relatively well.

@@MugenTJmy siblings are firefighters. It is skill based, they are overworked. There are still high qualifications to be a firefighter. Don’t downplay it because you don’t need a degree there is still months of training. And again they’re risking their lives. Daily. They are traumatized daily.
The worst thing about this case is people died because of their compassion, determination and bravery. You can’t even try to call it stupidity because they knew full well what they were doing
The worst part are the people left behind, who stood proudly with those brave, selfless men.
Never in my life have I been so angry at people not even directly involved in a situation. Every single person illegally parked should be charged and fined. It is genuinely infuriating.

The mother is to blame along with the son. Her repeated demands pushed those firefighters to go back inside to save an ungrateful worthless human.

I haven’t cried over a case in so long but hearing her talk about how the firefighters kept on working after knowing their colleges died was absolutely heartbreaking

This is so sickening, the mother and son needs life in prison, I don’t care. The illegally parked vehicles needs to pay hefty fines for damages to the family of the victims, the government should be ashamed of themselves, if it was their houses on fire, they would care then because that’s how it always goes. First responders need to be treated better.
I can't explain how frustrated I am knowing about this case. Frustrated about the illegally parked cars, the messed up son who got away, the family members who didn't notify about the son being at his uncle's house, the government that didn't provide adequate safety equipments & underpaid the firefighters. My heart aches for these brave firefighters and their family.
I want to put this out there that it has nothing to do with your race or ethnicity. It has to do with these human beings being killed because of somebody else's stupidity. It breaks my heart and I don't care what country comes from and absolutely has me in tears and I just want everyone to know that 😢

In the US if a car is illegally parked somewhere that blocks a firetruck and the firetruck needs to cause damage to the car in order to do their job they’re completely legally allowed to do that considering the car is in the wrong

There not just allowed they will 100% of the time
They’ll put the hose right through the car windows
They usually break 2 windows and thread the water hose through your car. They don’t care if it leaks and your car seats get wet and if that’s not enough the cop on the scene will give you a ticket😂
I live where you just step out from your house theres a literal street and I hate when people who still park outside sometimes EVEN INFRONT OF OUR HOUSE☠️tbh if you can't afford a garage don't own a car that's the reason we don't even thought of buying one yet
In Germany Firefighters aren't allowed to go in a building if it is collapses. its sounds hard but if the chances are too small to save another person they are not allowed to go inside. - this story is so shocking. it made me really sad

Think there definitely should be boundaries for firefighting…one person sacrificing their life for another, is one thing
But many people dying to try and save one person who probably won’t survive the building collapsing, I don’t think that can be justified
But that’s easy to say when it’s not myself in a situation like that
Yeah, I watched the logistic of firefighter in USA, and they apparently have procedure to always have safety inspector on site that gets to assess the situation and decide if it's too dangerous to go in. That way, no one should be able to guilt trip the firefighters to abandon their safety.
When the firefighters say "it's my job," they're not just saying "I dived into a fire because I get paid to." What they mean is "I signed up for this. I didn't just happen upon an unexpected situation, and suddenly have to make a choice. I'm here because I chose, long in advance, that I would do this when necessary in order to save lives."
This was beyond maddening. People died because she didn't believe them when they told her they didn't see her son in the building. I hope she is happy now. She ruined a lot of lives.
I have seen a lot of people blaming the mother, yet I’ve still got to see a comment blaming the actual cause of the fire. The firefighters could barely see 2 feet ahead of them in a 2 story building, if there was a person there, it would be very likely that they wouldn’t have found him. It’s not the abused mother’s fault what her son did. She didn’t know that her son was there, and based on another person, this happened in the 2000’s where cell phones weren’t as prominent. His relatives should have told the firefighters that the son wasn’t there earlier. His mother should not be blamed for the death of 6 firefighters, imagine the trauma this left her regardless
It's automatic the son gets the full blame for the fire but there's also a lot of blame to be spread. It's sad he abused his mother but it doesn't diminish the fact that 6 firefighters died because she wouldn't believe them when they looked several times for her son. We can still feel bad for her but also upset and frustrated she didn't believe them. It's a trolley problem and we can talk about would've, could've, should've but it still doesn't take away the fact that 6 firefighters died and left their family and loved ones to grieve after them. Is saving one person worth 6 lives? Is one trauma worse than 6?

As a kid with a firefighter for a dad, it's their personality. No matter how bad something is, they help. And they NEVER give up. It's unreal.

It can be terrifying when you realize you love someone like that. These guys kept shredding their bodies, when the only missing person was the son they didn't know the first thing about. It's technically, if not literally, insanity. But I guess that's why firefighters work together, they're constantly surrounded by people who are also willing to go that much further than the rest of us. Incidents like this one happen, but the odds of people getting hurt are so much lower than they would be if people like your dad weren't there. Tell him the internet says hi.
My husband has been a firefighter for over 30 years. It’s literally a brotherhood. They become family. It doesn’t matter what department they are in.
You know for a fact those that lost their firefighting brothers, probably still help to look after their families to this day. First responders and firefighters are some of the most passionate people I know.
Korea irritates my soul with their laws and corruption and the fact they take these men for granted sickens me. Every single car should’ve been charged with murder or accessories to murder and a fat fine. I’m outraged. 😤
I don't think it's a Korea problem, it's a worldwide problem. I'm from the United States, and I've never come across anything as corrupt as a local city government, and the number of vets living on the streets is horrifying.

1. The person was panicked. Therefore, she wasn't thinking clearly. Especially panicked considering her last memory would be a fight.
2. How is an unconscious person going to pick up a phone? Again, assumptions kill people (looks at korean government). 🙄
3. Likely course of action would be the son/or someone who has seen the son, contacting HER (not the other way round). So the assumption was kind of reasonable, although she still should have called afterwards. I mean, 3 hours passed, how has she not called by this time.
Right like after she got the word that they didn’t find him family should’ve been the next option :/
I know many moms and wives like that. They lived their lives with battered wife syndrome, gaslighted and blamed and put down. So, they lack the courage to say something about the situation, scared to be blamed or being wrong. They won't even tell someone about their OWN abusive situation. I'm not saying what she did was right, but it still all goes down to the decades-long trauma that forced them to make such mindless decisions. I feel bad for everyone involved, except the son.
its easy for you to say that but no one's first thought is to call. shes in distress and hurt. she thought she just lost her son. why would she call. you could tell she was not in her right mind. She was described as inconsolable, she most likely thought his body was so burnt up that it was unrecognisable.
honestly, one thing I love about Stephanie is how she discusses these stories, how you can see the tears form in her eyes, how emotionally connected she is - it shows how much investment she has in sharing these stories and delivering justice.

That’s so real- If you think about it, the relationship between a parent and child hugely depends on the parent, what happened when raising the child that resulted in such bad arguments and domestic violence? Plus “mental health” i think the mother must also not be “normal” like there’s something up with the whole family including the relative who nonchalantly said that the son was at someone else’s house…
My grandma is like that and I can absolutely not stand it. Her son has been a problem child and she could never rain him in. By the time she realised what she was doing was wrong it was too late and now she prefers to live with the delusion that maybe if she "loves him enough and doesn't leave him" he would change. A drug abuser that spent years in prison for arson then when he came out of jail, thanks to his mother and enabler, he brutally beat my mum (his sister) in front of my little brothers. She still believes she could change him and wE sHouLd ForGive HIm. And I know more mothers like this. It genuinely disgusts me.

I cried so hard watching this. My brother Sam was a firefighter here in Canada and I miss him every single day. He also passed away in the line of duty 3 days after he became a father to triplets. I am still crying as I type.

This story is heartbreaking, I can't imagine how hard it was to grow up like this, worried your own father would be in a situation like this

The raw emotion in her voice as she’s telling this horrific story is heartbreaking. It takes a lot to get me this angry, but every last person who COULD have made a difference and saved these men failed them. My heart goes out to the victims’ families; I truly hope they have found peace, and that conditions continue to improve so that this never happens again.
That last line you left us with,

It’s blows my mind how many evil, cruel, gruesome, disgusting “people” are in this world. My cousin was a front line firefighter who went to fight some of the biggest fires. He was sent to California a few years back when nearly the entire state was on fire. He has been sent all over the country since he’s front line, and he has some trauma from some of his buddies dying in fires, and he’s nearly lost his life a few times also. He’s saved so many people from burning buildings, houses, parks, etc. The pay was literally nothing, literally got no money at all for the very first year which is ridiculous and pathetic. These people are risking their lives to save others and can barely afford living costs.
For hero’s who save people deserve a special place in heaven and for psycho killers who end lives of these hero’s deserve a very horrific place in hell.

I’m always at work trying to fight back tears while listening to these stories. I used to hate how sensitive I was, but now I’m embracing it more. The ability to feel feelings outside of yourself is a gift that I used to view as a curse.🥺🥺

I know... my father was a firefighter before and my mom basically made an ultimatum for him to find another job, when she gave birth to third child (me). I remember him saying that payment was low, but he finds it's fair since he didn't have education and firefighters don't require to have one. He would always bring himself down because of it, though I find my dad one of the most hard-working and self-disciplined people in my life.

How emotional she gets during this video is extremely touching. Shows how much she puts into the research and each persons story. A truly amazing and inspiring story teller.
I see many comments saying that you were “exaggerating” and “over dramatic” in this video, but i don’t understand. It’s so refreshing to see that a true crime channel actually has some emotion and gives a large portion of the video to speak about the people that passed. It’s lovely that you can hear you on the brink of tears, and that you took extra care on mentioning all of their personalities. They were people, real people. Hearing their stories isn’t exaggerating, and putting emotion in her voice isn’t being dramatic. This one hit me really hard, I'm trying not to be a mess. My dad was a firefighter. I grew up in the firehouse with him and all his buddies. And now my brother works at the same station. They gave him our dad's badge number when he passed. Love to everyone who takes that oath and the families who support them ❤

I haven’t sobbed this hard in so long. These firefighters, these heroes, deserved so much more than they got. I’m so upset and heartbroken for these families who suffered such painful losses. I’m so broken for these men who fought tooth and nail to save their friends only to lose them. Fuck that son, all the illegally parked cars, the mother who didn’t say anything, the fucking government for not treating the firefighters well enough. God bless the firefighters who gave their life and god bless all the firefighters and their families who are alive.
As someone who lost a firefighter friend to his job I know how this feels like. I know how passionate they are, this had me in tears remembering him and the call that told me what happened.
My father is a retired firefighter. He managed to do it for 30 years and made it out, but I know some who didn't. This made me cry this morning but I love how much you tried to understand the fear we lived with as his family and the sacrifice he did.😊

The quote “ And tears would spread into the rubble, but they would continue searching.” You said this for each firefighter, and it was incredibly beautiful. You’re an amazing person Stephanie. I love both you and your fiancé, you’re both beautiful souls.

As a fan of true crime content, I admit that it's easy for me to become jaded and forget to appreciate the real people involved in these stories. But you always help me remember, because of they way you put so much love and compassion into your storytelling

She has become my favorite true crime channel, i don't see this type of empathy from anyone else. All the people I watch are respectful, but Stephanie is a rare one who can empathize with the victims to that level.
These are the real life story, a real horror the world needs to learn about.
If they were only going to give him 5 years for his mental health, then it should have been 5 years per firefighter lost.
And plus for the paralysed man, shoulder injury man, others with minor injuries digging the house, and the cost of the house and belongings too

As a nurse with firefighters for parents & sibling, this story touched me in a personal level. My dad has long passed away, my mom retired, and my brother new to the service. I just hope he’ll always be safe too.

my heart goes out to all the victims, families and the friends of ones. and the 5-year sentence is actually insane. a 32-year-old man took 6 LIVES and you're telling me he only got that?! truly unfair. praying to God that the fallen firefighters are now in a better place and that karma soon catches up to the son, his mother and all the people that didn't react while they had the possibility to do so.
What I love about you is you personify the victims so much so you tell their story with so much emotion. I can tell you really care about these people.

This is literally horrifying. Sending prayers to the firefighters who valiantly gave their lives and their families who surely miss them terribly. Like you were saying, people like that are just built different. To be so selfless even when it goes against your human nature to preserve yourself, to risk your lives like that for someone you’ve never met, even though you KNOW with certainty that the house is going to fall down. These are remarkable people, too good for this world.
Not only does the mother deserve to be charged, but so do the people who blocked the road.

I was listening to the podcast last week and couldn't believe my ears when Stephanie said the firefighters were given raincoats instead of actual fireproof suits and equipment. RAINCOATS?? Just what the hell. I had to rewind to see if i heard correctly this is just unfathomable

I feel so bad for the six firefighters that died in that fire and their colleagues families and friends too they were husbands, brothers, sons and so many other things but their lives had to be lost for something that could be avoided and what's even more annoying is that the person who committed this crime only got five years in prison that's really messed up he knew exactly what he was doing especially when he didn't tell anyone in the house.

I'm choking back hot, angry tears. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO BULLDOZE OVER THE ILLEGALLY PARKED CARS. And they shouldn't have been allowed to go back in a second, third, fourth time for the son. The mom should be fined and jailed. The son should be locked away FOR LIFE. This is so damn devastating, my mind can't even comprehend how preventable this tragedy was.

This is absolutely disgusting!!!!!!!! I had several work accidents because of people constantly parking their vehicles in an illegal spot!!!!!!!!! They only caused property damage and got me in trouble.....me.....not the people who parked illegally......I can't imagine how awful those firemen felt.....THIS CAUSED HIS COLLEGE TO DIE!!!!!!! AND THEY GOT SEVERELY INJURED!!!!!! I WOULD BE FURIOUS!!!!!!
As someone who has been in an apartment building fire where I had to get rescued from the fifth floor… I watched as the roof collapsed on five firefighters, and I cannot even express the terror I felt in that moment for them. It was surreal. They all luckily survived after a trip to the hospital. I cannot fathom this situation. I owe my life to firefighters. They are the best of humanity.

The mom and the relatives are just as guilty as the son. The relatives showed up shortly after the firefighters did, I'm furious they did not alert the firemen the son was not there. There's absolutory no way the mom and relatives didn't talk about the son so they knowingly withheld the information while the mom was screaming and shaming the firemen to their death. It's disgusting. I'm amazed the firefighters didn't explode on the family once everything came out.

I can’t help but compare the “rescuers” in the sewol tragedy and this story. The former did insufficient efforts while the latter went beyond to rescue someone. It’s infuriating. The world has lost these selfless firefighters due to the actions of others: the lack of government funding, the son who started the fire, the illegal parking citizens
i listened to this on spotify and it left me in tears and grief when the firefighters were named dead one by one and then their reaction to when the son was still alive. thank you for sharing cases like these from overseas!
