characterization/character development etc is like my favorite thing ever and this describes how i go about it so well, especially the part about writing yourself into your characters it makes them feel waay more realistic and relatable since you actually know what its like to go through it... in my experience even writing about that stuff from a different perspective (the characters) can help me work through those problems so i feel like its a veerrrrry important step
another tip is never write down your character's personalities, or never just decide them fully. only when necessary.
why? when you write it down, it will make you feel heavily restricted to what you wrote. if you are an artist, try maybe doodling your characters doing something, anything. it could be interacting with a character, a simple little doodle of them doing something, anything. *in my opinion* , it gave me a better opportunity to flesh out my characters. this may not work for everyone, but it worked with me.
So this is something I like to do: you know those character questionnaires? I like to take random online quizzes as my characters. Some of them are beefy stuff like the Meyer Brigg personality quizes, and some are 'what ice cream flavour are you?'. I love them because they ask you questions about yoir characters that you likely haven't considered, like what their choice of a vacation would be, or if they like public speaking.
this is such a fun idea!!!!
That's actually a great idea!
I think my favourite example of an abused character without depicting the abuse is nurse Bendy, they only show her reaction to said trauma and actually effects the plot
I also recommend exploring your character's personality through how they would interact with another character! Find an already existing character, and imagine your character interacting with it. This forces you to think of them in a context rather than just having their personality in a void!
✨ hey if you liked this vid, subscribe!! next week's vid is gonna be *10 THINGS I wish I knew before I started my webcomics/webseries* featuring *_BIG DEAL TIPS_* that can help you actually FINISH your project!!! 😂
This is actually an incredible video for writing advice! Your videos in general are so well drawn and animated, you totally deserve more love than you normally get!
aaaa that's so nice of you to say so!! thank you so much!!! 🥰
Oh wow i never thought about making playlists for my characters! Thats a really good idea, I get a lot of ideas for my comic characters that way
Might have to watch this again when I am in my writing zone again. I take any advice I can get cos I'm an idea guy but struggle with the nuts and bots of putting it together, so every bit helps. Thanks for the tips in advance.
awesome!! best of luck to you!! ♥
@@Puddle thanks I will need it ^^;
This really helped me think of some ideas for my new oc (which I am attempting to make into a vtuber model) I really like how you were so honest about pinterest, recommending listening to music and al the other little tips! Most people just say pinterest and references but this way refreshing and different! Thank you
i love this. i’m working on the origin story of my ocs who make music together and i just wrote some one-off non plot stuff on the side of my synopsis !! ive had my characters for so long yet not known exactly what their lives are like and im finally ready to build them up
i might use some of these. most times i used the message of building a couple personality traits & then repeatedly throwing each character into the same situation & seeing what they do differntly
oooh! throwing characters into the same situation to compare how they react is also a fun way to learn their personality!!! that's a good suggestion!
This is a really cool guide: thanks for making it!
thank *you* for checking it out!!
Hi, Thank you for this, it's very helpful!! :3
I also like to put my characters in situations.
What would they order at a cafe? What movies would they watch with _____ character. What does their best/worst day look like? If they get a $1,000
what would they spend it on?
Or I'd give them opinions.
Does pineapple go on pizza? Toilet paper facing out or in?
oooh yeah wondering where they fall on the "what is and isn't a sandwich" debate is one of the classics too
This is super helpful! tysm
This is so helpful! Thanks for making this video
I'm so glad!! hoping next week's vid is helpful too!!
in past (i had like 4 years or so) i made a character called Alexis that watched his parents die by a dragon after saving a child from going into the mystic forest, now he is a knight called “the red knight”, i watched this video right now thx a lot
This was so helpful thank you for the tips :))
I'm so glad!!
one of my ocs for a pre-existing fandom that happens to be my most traumatized ocs, though most of it ties into the source material. she's of a species that was almost wiped out, and my explanation for her survival is that her adaptation ability has made her unrecognizable. the people responsible for almost wiping them out however have been almost wiped out as well, and the remaining ones of that species where not involved. Despite this others of her kind have still been vengeful, so her idea is one that chose to stay kind instead of becoming bitter and vengeful like everyone else, at the end of the day she just wants to live her life. (fun fact this is lore from a comedy anime, gold star for those who recognize it despite how vague I made it.)
I’m making a webtoon I’m so excited and this was so helpful!
I'm so glad!
it is so incredibly nice to see someone else who knows who Apes of the State and Local News Legend are!
