We did baby led weaning, where baby eats whole foods right from the start (6-8mos). It made so much sense to me, and worked so well! (along with breastfeeding) My kids loved eating a wide variety of foods right from the start, and are still great eaters!
Baby led weaning worked great for my daughter but I don’t think it will fully suit my 5 month old son. He is a hungry boy and doesn’t have the patience to work for his meal. He knows he wants to eat, he doesn’t want try it out! I literally just introduced purées and he ate a whole pouch . I couldn’t put it in his mouth fast enough. I think purées will be great for him. Once we have our new feeding routine down I’ll introduce solids , but solids are not the first thing he wants.
Berber foods started using the phrase “We know which trees the fruit comes from” because @ 1990, chemicals were found in their baby apple juice! My kids came in ‘92 and ‘93, breast feed until 15 months and made all thier food. My son was orange because we fed him so many carrots and winter squash! He now makes his babies food and mom breast feds until she is expecting again(over a year). Great video.
I don't remember a problem with Gerber. But I do remember a problem with beechnut they were the ones that weren't putting any apples in their apple juice. That was in the early '90s
When my son was young in the 80s, I didn’t like what I was reading on labels and after tasting the baby food from the grocery stores I just didn’t feel it was nutritious enough so I began making my own homemade baby food…….. today my children remember seeing me do that with my grandchildren as well. This is a far cry from the "enriched" rice cereal that I started my kids on 50 years ago! Awesome by video! I'll save it for when my great grandbabies come along😊
The first food my kids got was butter fried, medium rare liver. Not ground up. Just a good long piece which they could just suck on. Then they got a piece of sirloin with all the fat for the brain. Egg yolks, salmon, and more meat. Fruit in season and Vegetables were much later and only what they accepted. Turns out baby's love mostly animal products.
I never introduced fruit until much later. Probably about 12 months. I used sweet potatoes as dessert. I read if you wait to introduce sugars it is better for having children that love vegetables. Not sure if that’s true, however my kids never found a vegetable they disliked unlike friends kids that would throw a fit when broccoli or salad was on the table.
Wait did you say 10 kids!!! There is no way you have 10 kids, as you look way to young to have that many. Thank you for this amazing timeless advice. I am so grateful.

Thank you for this video! Im a first time mom and have found myself anxious and overwhelmed with giving my son solids. Everywhere on the internet swears by baby led weaning but I find it wasteful and time consuming. This looks like the perfect balance of feeding the meals we eat in an easier and less wasteful way. My son loves feeding himself but I think he will get more nutrition by being spoonfed meals like these! It makes me feel more confident in what Im feeding him.
I have so many health and gut problems, and doctors don't really help me because i don't want to take a bunch of pills. I've been on lots of diets etc. Then tonight, i was just thinking about foods that are easily digested, which led to baby food and now your video.😊
Great topic. My kids ate what we ate at the table. My daughter has done the same with her 12 kids. They are included in meal prep start to finish. Basic traditional food.

Carolyn: When you are preparing your beet baby food you might want to consider using a tablespoon blackstrap molasses if you are out of powdered organ meat. It will provide a good dose of iron as well as several trace minerals, while still not causing baby to develop a sweet tooth. You may want to freeze dry some of your baby foods to make them shelf stable for emergencies and trips.

Each country only makes enough formula for each country. The U.S. doesn’t rely on foreign formula. It’s American cow milk, dehydrated with added nutrients. Thank goodness for science.
You can purchase the empty non BPA pouches to store these in. This is fun for the older and independent 1yr olds. They freeze well and work for that convenience I need!
With my first, I was making her a lot of pea puree, she loved it. One day I forgot the jar in the diaper bag after an outing. Maybe 1 1/2 week later I found it and it wasn't even moldy. I was making the puree with NoName brand frozen peas. After that I made sure to buy organic.

Oh my gosh, how adorable. My Great Grandaughter just turned a year old, and sad to say, my kids & Grand kids, all in the Medical field have gotten crazy advice from the "Pediatrition". I am concerned she is not getting enough, and proper nutrition, being on regular adult solids since 8-9 months old....she isn't barely eating it. Salmon at least a few times a week, etc. IDK, just venting. I sent my daughter, her Grandmother, this video...she tries to "prepare" her meals once a week, since the baby's Mom, my Grand daughter, works and is in school full time. Great timing for me. My baby will be starting solids in 2 months. I regret the decision I'd made in my older children to buy "organic" baby food (usually rice and oatmeal cereal and some of the veg/fruit I normally didn't cook at home like beets or plums or pumpkin) - finding out they are still full of heavy metals and terrible pesticides. I wish that I'd done that differently and I plan to.
I know this question has nothing to do with this video but I chose to comment here because it is a recent video so I thought the chance of getting a response would be better. I watched the video you made about a year ago on canning ground meat. I followed your instructions and I processed 5 quarts of ground beef. It took me a while to get the canner stabilized at 10 lbs but once it got there and stayed for several minutes I started my timer for 90 minutes. It was late when it finished so I left the canner to cool overnight. I removed the jars the next morning and let the jars rest on the counter for two days. On the second day I realized I had not tested the seal. I removed the rings and checked the buttons and all jars appeared to be sealed. When I tried lifting the jars by the lids all but one passed that test. When I lifted one of the jars by the lid it held for a couple of seconds and then the lid came off. My concern is since I didn't check them until the second day has too much time passed on that one jar for the meat to still be good. I placed it in the refrigerator as soon as I put the lid back on but i am concerned that if it didn't have a proper seal and it sat on the counter for 2 days that the meat may be spoiled. I hope all that makes sense. Please advise.
Could you make and freeze dry them if you have a freeze dryer and then keep them ahead for busy weeks over freezing them in the freezer? What would be a con of using a freeze dryer?

Unfortunately, most purees are not safe to can. You can follow safe recipes for pressure canning like pumpkin in chunks, potatoes, carrots, etc. and mash them after opening. This is a safe and approved site to reference: nchfp.uga.edu/

We live in the city. Finding fresh organic foods to turn into baby food was difficult. We ended up buying frozen organic foods. It wasn't perfect but making our own baby foods for the grandkids was a game changer. My grandchildren were all in the 86 percentile and above in the growth charts. Their doctor was very please with their overall health and growth. Some women can't breastfeed, please keep that in mind.
The reason to avoid honey until age 2, even in baked goods, is that it can contain spores of Botulinum perfringens (and other species) which is related to botulism poisoning. These bacteria can get a toe hold in young immature intestines, compete to eliminate the other bacteria, and then attack intestinal cells to literally rot them out to literal slime. The specific disease is called pseudomembranous enterocolitis, and it can be fatal with a lot of pain. Ditto is involved in adults if they have had a lot of antibiotics and their intestines are not well established with inhabitation by normal healthy bacteria. It's the idea of what is first to colonize an unstable vacuum, and babies until the age of about two don't have stable intestinal bacteria. Since the bacterial spores can survive oven heat, that's why honey baked into oven goodies can make little kids very sick or very dead.
The liver and kidneys purify toxins from the blood. If the animal was slaughtered (at home or commercially at the slaughterhouse) with poisons on board in the process of being broken down or otherwise eliminated, they can be present for human consumption when the animal is killed and any poisons there can remain static inside the organ. So with liver and kidneys it can be dangerous to assume fresh or freeze-dried material is necessarily safe.
Dont even bother with puree at all. Just give baby real food from the beginning. My rule for starting with my kids was anythjng soft enough for me to easily mash between my fingers. Evidence is also coming out that skipping purees altogether also promotes better jaw development, tongue development and tooth development, fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination. It might even help prevent the need for braces later on.

Babies literally cannot digest starch till their molars come in. They don’t produce the digestive enzymes needed to digest starches till then

The reason to avoid honey until age 2, even in baked goods, is that it can contain spores of Botulinum perfringens (and other species) which is related to botulism poisoning. These bacteria can get a toe hold in young immature intestines, compete to eliminate the other bacteria, and then attack intestinal cells to literally rot them out to literal slime. The specific disease is called pseudomembranous enterocolitis, and it can be fatal with a lot of pain. Ditto is involved in adults if they have had a lot of antibiotics and their intestines are not well established with inhabitation by normal healthy bacteria. It's the idea of what is first to colonize an unstable vacuum, and babies until the age of about two don't have stable intestinal bacteria. Since the bacterial spores can survive oven heat, that's why honey baked into oven goodies can make little kids very sick or very dead.
The liver and kidneys purify toxins from the blood. If the animal was slaughtered (at home or commercially at the slaughterhouse) with poisons on board in the process of being broken down or otherwise eliminated, they can be present for human consumption when the animal is killed and any poisons there can remain static inside the organ. So with liver and kidneys it can be dangerous to assume fresh or freeze-dried material is necessarily safe.

Dont even bother with puree at all. Just give baby real food from the beginning. My rule for starting with my kids was anythjng soft enough for me to easily mash between my fingers. Evidence is also coming out that skipping purees altogether also promotes better jaw development, tongue development and tooth development, fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination. It might even help prevent the need for braces later on.
