How A Position In Football Disappeared With The Retirement Of A Player

- In defensive positions, there are centrebacks, fullbacks, and even your occasional sweepers. But did you know there’s also a position known as the Libero?
And the last of this unique and extinct breed was truly no other than Laurent Blanc.
This unicorn of a player is the 4th highest goalscoring defender of all time and had one of the most specialized and unique skillsets you could ever find.
So, let’s take a look at the story of the Laurent Blanc- the defender who was so special, he became the last of true liberos as the position essentially disappeared after he retired.

I'll be honest. Anything Football.... HITC Steven's and Daily Dose of Football I watch other then you. But because you use live video vs Cut and Paste like they do makes them more consistent.. but that's really it..
P.s. Don't change your style. You still set a standard. Don't cheapen your product for more views. 💯
Roberto Baggio !
Raymar can you make a video on bebeto?! I feel like he’s a forgotten Brazilian legend especially how he used to dominate la liga
Rafa Marquez please, he was a great Mexican defender and although he was no libero, he was known for having great skill when on the ball and could most definitely play out the back and contribute to the attack if his team needed him to.
The role John Stones is playing might be another milestone in the evolution of football tactics. He is turning into sort of a libero, but of course with modified out-of-possession responsibilities adapted to modern game. In possession, he communicates with his teammates through his positioning. Walker understands when to run forward, Rodri knows where to hold, Gundo sees when to come deep or push the last line from Stones' movement. Position is a communicative element and Stones has become an excellent rhetorician.
how can you write that coment so fast
i was thinking this also
JOEL MATIP IS LIBERO
Gotta give it to Pep, as his introducing of a defender taking a position at the base of midfield to create the modern "box-modfield" was a tactical masterstroke, now being copied by so many others.
This in referrence to Stones having played from CB instead of actual DM.
@@konzzaThat's not a Pep idea.
Koeman basically player like this for the Netherlands, but instead of Stones and Rodri taking turns, Koeman always went higher up, whereas the DM always anchored.
There are a couple teams that played like this in different forms because not every libero is made equal. An Italian libero for example is an entirely different role as the Dutch or German libero.
I believe Blanc to be the last “true” Libero as back in such a formation strict era, only guys like him and Beckenbaur really had the freedom to play like they did. Football is mainly positionless and fluid now, anyone in the back line can act as a libero
Lothar Matthäus, Ronald Koeman, Rune Bratseth, Frank Verlaat....I could name a bunch of players that all interpreted this position differently.
Rafa Márquez??
Blanc can play as a cam is surprising since in Fc 24 he has 70 finishing
Mathias Sammer, Franco Baresi and Lothar Matthaus at the end of his career also played libero and were great in that role.
@@Raydensheraj Popescu, Romanian NT player was also playing the position.
"Libero" in italian (or latin) means "free" and transposed to football means what you described very well: a player with defensive role but with freedom to build the game and progressing on the pitch. Laurent Blanc was indeed a master on that role and it was awesome of you to remind us who watch him play and for the youngsters to learn what a quality player looks like.
The role didn't die it was just given to a DM because a CB leaving his position can be exploited.
Yeah especially in the era where long balls are more common it is just a dumb idea to play a libero
Ask Pep when he play with John Stones. @@asimsheikh429
I’d say the role really only existed because the game back then was very strict with formations. Now, everyone plays very fluidly. But in their era, it was really only the most unique players like him who had the freedom to move essentially anywhere on the pitch. Hence why I think “true” liberos are extinct
@@RaymarFootball I see your point now. I agree
What about Sammer ?
08:47... What's Phillippe Coutinho doing in Barca's dream team of the 90s?! 😂

8:46 who can forget Blanc who played alongside Coutinho😂
very observant
You mean Cantona
@@user-ww1ms2if9q nah him n Coutinho were boys, always saw them 2gether during the summer break
@@k1llsk wow fr I didn’t know thanks
damn coutinho hanging out with blanc ronaldo and figo. what a lad
That one got me emotionnal! It was Laurent Blanc who spoke to Zidane the night before 98 world cup final game. "it's your time now. You have to win us this one now!". Knowing that Blanc will not play in the final because of his red card.
Zidane scored two headers the first half. Game over!
I never expected Laurent Blanc would be a scorer! Too young to watch him. Now i know the specimen better. Thank you a lot Raymar for this one!
What's funny is that Zidane was suspended during the Paraguay match when Blanc scored the decisive goal, I guess they had each other's backs.
@5:33 that's Miodrag Belodedici, also one of the last liberos. Retired in 2001, Romanian player, won 2 CL, with Steaua Bucharest (86) and Red Star Belgrad (91).
Blanc, Beckenbauer, Baresi etc were great examples of this position. I think Moore as well. and Lothar Matthaus could also play this position despite being more of CDM
The position was changed to a dm which means CDM is kinda of a liberto
Laurent Blanc will always be remembered for being one of the greatest defenders of football history
And on ea fc
at least on FIFA OR EAFC

He can't be forgotten, he's getting a new card in fifa every couple of months
It's a shame we can't have him in eFootball, as it's the best football game right now, especially the coop 2v2 and 3v3 mode. I play football games since the 90s (starting on Pegasus). I probably had the most hours in single player in FIFA 2004, but right now eFootball is the way to go and you don't lose your cards every seaason, so we collect legends with friends for a few years already and use each other's cards in the coop mode (it takes cards from all players in the party). We have Beckenbauer, though, when it comes to liberos.
@@Kondiqqif you play football games since that much so you'd know that there is no good football games nowadays.
Bro has 1 card lmao

R.I.P Kaiser. You will always be remembered for your contribution to the beautiful game.
John Stones might be the modern Libero

Matthias Sammer was a libero, too, and younger.
his 1995-96 season with auxerre (cup-championship double) was downright *stellar* (made him co-captain of france at euro96 and earned him a move to barça). what always amazed me was his incredible positionning, he never seemed to run, yet he was *always* at the right place at the right time. (also, he always shot the fifth penalty. the only time france needed a sixth, they lost.)
He did scored a lot of goals but he's more defensive in the twillight of his career which is understandable. I think Lothar Mathaus was the true last libero out and out. But Blank definitely is one of the legendary players for sure.
I watched him in his final season at Manchester United, he and O'Shea were a fantastic pair.
It's not extinct, this position is still played today. It has just adapted to modern football. Just watch a heatmap of any top center back. Rest in peace Franz Beckenbauer.
Hey bro love your videos but Can you Make a Video About The Portuguese Wall - Ricardo Carvalho 🔥

Crazy how in my school, I didn't notice I was playing as a libero but I am currently
In ea fc mobile hes secondary position cam i was confused as his primary was centre back and his height at 6'4 but this really explained it, your videos are informative and entertaining w channel

David sucker XD You mean Davor Šuker
about the libero position, check Nasazzi 1924 (Uruguay vs. Celta de Vigo) and Rappan 1954 (World Cup). great to remember Blanc, he was a treat for the eyes
The word 'underrated' has been casually thrown since I've known internet but the back 4 of Lizarazu-Desailly-Blanc-Thuram IMO is truly underrated. People would quickly mention the Italian defenders but the French back four is the best since I started watching football in 96-97. It's understandable though due to popularity of Serie A and almost nobody I knew since back in the 90s even like France NT. And now even 20yo kids would quickly say Nesta, Maldini, Cannavaro as the best DFs.
Legend! what an amazing player!
Watched this video one day later Franz Beckenbauer died its destiny.
One of my absolute favorite legends, a Cult Hero at Manchester United. His managerial mind, and as a Sporting Director at PSG is unparalleled.
Wonderful video
Good vid!
its nice to see that there are a lot of players who play the role of a libero but not the actual position, Luka Modrić and Alessandro Bastoni come to mind to me
8:46 My man Coutinho played under Johan Cruyff. His longevity is unmatchef😂😂😂
Love the Bio!❤
Stones, Bastoni and FDJ at Ajax are pretty good examples of modern liberos
also matip with his adventures
Can’t get over this voice tone…😅 bro take it easy…great job content wise. Consistently! Cheers👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hoping you make one on Jorge El Magico Gonzalez and his time with Cadiz
My goat cb in ea fc mobile ♥️
Ha ha. Looking at video headline, i just impulsively knew where we're heading to...The Italians virtually developed this position (the Libero) in the late 60s in the Catenaccio years... Beckenbauer, Sciera, Maxime Bossis, Franco Batesi, Laurent Blanc, Ronald Koeman are some of the true LEGENDS of the position.
Ruhe in Frieden unser Kaiser ❤
RIP Franz Beckenbauer
This was the position I played in high school as captain back in the 90s.
Now atleast fc mobile players will not be shocked when they see a cb like blanc Scoring long range bangers.
He was one of those very unique cb who can actually shoot very well and can play forward.
in fc mobile he has alternate position as cam
The background sound is finally back ✅️
Please do Scirea a true generational defender he was on a different level in defending what a beast he was and was the only person who could keep the great Baresi on the bench🇮🇹
He plays just like Frenkie de Jong at Ajax. De Jong also played allot as CB and was always the playmaker. The dribbler and the passer. While frenkie de Jong has the pace, Blanc is a bit more technical i think!
The anticipate + was the key to his success
Hey i wanted to ask if daily dose of football diesnt do this story di yiu think you can the story if either mahrez or the most underrated legend of his country chris wood pls love the vids and you choose witch one you wanna do 🐐 much love ❤️
Hi bro great video
It came out a minute ago how do you know
very cool! the french jonilson as we call him in brazil
Blanc card is amazing guys
What was Coutinho doing in that legendary Barca team photo
Speaking of which, would you think that Matt Le Tissier be able to play such kind of a role?
As you stated before, Blanc also was a slow but technically gifted midfielder. That worked for Le God.
Rip to the inventor of the Libero beckenbauer
An unforgettable legend 🙏
Blanc, Henry, Vieira, Makelele, Zidane, Pires, Trezeguet, Petit, Gallas that Frence side was one of the greatest ever.
Raymar u are the best UA-camr
I play him in fifa hes good af
Thats the best position to play imo. So fun
Do a video on liarazu the French 🇫🇷 left wing back please
There were still liberos after him. True, a bit more like sweepers, but still Carles Puyol is a good example of one.
Well at least I guess EA got him right because I’ve been seeing him and van dijk more than my parents recently, they are ridiculous in the game
Rip Franz Beckenbaur ❤️.
Ik the netherlands this positions still exists in amateur football this position is called voorstopper here and its one of the cb who plays in front of the other cb and the voorstopper helps setting up attacks and even dribbles up the pitch just like a libero
That's not true. It's in the word 'before stopper.' The voorstopper role has nothing to do with offensive tactics but with defense. It literally means he's the 'balstopper' who always picks up either the striker or is the first to step up at players running at the defense.
Libero is an offensive role. Voorstopper a defensive one.
@@Dotsetcno. He’s right, Netherlands still has it specially because they take in mind the best second libero of history koeman. So the Dutch always bring these defenders, blind, de Jong, now koopmeiners or timber but they don’t excel at being libero
A very underated position.
Rip Franz 😢
Manage to witness another libero ( i believe) in a AFF cup final 2022: Theerathon Bunmathan
Thai footballer
he was launching counter attack like pirlo (then I figured out he was a CB or LB lol), almost every where, watching him was a bless. Maybe not comparable to European player, but I still enjoy edwatching him play lol
While they may not be called libero, I feel there are positions that are very similar. Wing backs who can attack or defend or midfielders who defend, but also pose a threat going forward.
I think its funny how some of the players you talk about would be happy to be talked about. Laurent Blanc included. He was a very good player of course but not to the extent of the other players you covered.
Just a very unique player indeed!
I always love playing as a libero
8:45 for comical Easter egg 😭😂😂😂
tchouameni is who im thinking of watching this, he would thrive in this position
Laurent Blanc after his playing career had also a great managerial career, winning four Ligue 1 titles with Bordeaux and PSG
John Stones played a similar role last season under Pep...
"Well, the Libero might be dead in real life but during my last save of Football Manager I...."
Every FM player....ever.
Make a video about Gabriel Barbosa (nickname gabigol).
Please make a video for greece 2004 European Champions

8:49 coutinho in the right side of the pic for no reason lol
pls make a video about micheal laudraup
One of the highest scoring defenders of all time, along with Hierro(RM), Ramos(RM), and Ronald Koeman (Barcelona). With both Hierro and Koeman having more career goals than Zidane.
he doesnt look like a nowadays french
I would like to see what a player like Frenkie De Jong can do as a libero. He has a lot of the traits you would need for the position. Think he could be solid at it
He already played that role at Ajax quite a lot and for the Netherlands as well. Even a couple times for Barca, but Xavi never gave him the actual freedom to play the role.
I think it's a bit reductive to claim that nobody today plays as a Libero anymore. Arguably, defenders these days are just generally more involved in the attacking side of things, so a defender that does that doesn't stand out that much anymore.
Also, David Alaba would be a pretty good example for someone who plays that role at a very high level.
I see where you’re coming from my man! I say he was the last of the “true” liberos because even in a very formation based and focused style of his era, it was really only guys like him who had real freedom as a defender to play positionless. You’re right indeed, the game today is much more free flowing and positionless, which is why having that one person who could do it was so special and unique. But I’m sure if he and guys like Beckenbauer, Gullit, and others played today, they would absolutely thrive 💪
❤❤
Also right now I saw two Dutch (curious like koeman who was the best libero with beckenbauer) players who I thought were perfect liberos de Jong and koopmeiners.
These guys are perfect for this but now they’ve become midfielders
Also many would think stones or Arnold but one is a defender turned midfielder and the other one has more abilities but fit better as cm
joel matip has insane dribbling
Thats why he has best dribbling and shooting stats in fc mobile as a defender..and having secondry position as CAM 😂
I don't want to bother anyone, but I think the stressed vowel is in "li" instead of "be"
How timely with Kaiser Franz’s death.
RIP to the libero pioneer
2:34 or should you say "the Blanc stare" 😂
Lol that random coutinho in the Barca team pic
What’s the background music
Actually, the role didn't 'die' when Laurent Blanc retired in 2003. Greece won the Euro 2004 with Traianos Dellas playing all matches as Libero.
The role libero brings the name of Camavinga in my mind 😮
8:45 coutinho in the 96/97 squad
