  • Bradley Cook is an engineer who’s worked with countless amazing artists, including Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Counting Crows, Isaac Hayes, Ben Harper, Fishbone, and Everclear.
    He calls Barefoot Recording a home away from home, having worked there on and off since the studio’s renovation and rebranding in 2000. Bradley assisted Eric Valentine on projects over the years, while also venturing off on major projects of his own at various studios-notably Grandmaster Recorders, which was unfortunately sold for redevelopment nearly two years ago.
    Bradley brings 30 years’ experience as an audio engineer to the table, and his résumé speaks for itself!

    I just found this channel and it's fantastic!
    If you do a part 2, I'd love to hear some stories behind the making of Queens of the Stone Age's "Rated R". The bass on that record is massive. What was that setup? I know they liked to put mics between two cabinets facing each other and play with the phase. Any other interesting techniques? Also, how did Gil get along with the Distillers on that Coral Fang record? Did he have to spend a lot of time with the band working out parts or pushing them to pick up their chops, or was it relatively painless? He has a reputation from some bands as a bit of a perfectionist so was just wondering how he handled a punk rock band like that. That record ended up being a cross genre hit that appealed to more than just punk fans, so just curious of his impact on it.

    BBC Faders going "wrong" way - my story: I heard in one documentary (can't remember which at this moment) that engineers were accidentally moving faders with their shirt sleeves and jacket sleeves. That was the dressing "fashion" those days. So, in order NOT to move fader in the "wrong" way somebody came to an idea to push the gain (volume) up is towards the eng. and to push the volume down was the other way around. Anyway, that is what I heard and remember. Warren, great video BTW. Again! I just love these tours and pros sharing their stories with a public! Warmest regards from cold Zagreb! Krešo ;-)

    Great content once again. Thinking about the faders coming towards you, and maybe a design thought that you would be less likely to knock them once set. Also if you did you would knock the levels down in amplitude so less likely to damage equipment or ears 😎. Barefoot seems a great place with a fantastic set of people. Love the cable, seen it in one of Eric V's videos. Great thought how do we take that noise and make use of it in a positive way. Eric's the man buying those mic's you'll have to do some tracks for the academy 😉.

    I have a question Warren, please ask Bradley what is more important when capturing guitar tones like the heavier ones we hear on TCATS. Obviously its partly the guitar/amp/player doing the work but capturing the sound is it more the microphone doing the work and the mic pre is amplifying the signal or is part of the sound driving the mic pre to add more harmonics to an already overdriven/distorted amp? The reason I ask is sometimes on these albums I can't tell if the low to low mids have been EQ'd out and the mid to upper mids have been EQ'd in or they are driving preamps/compressors that are known for their mid range bump when pushed. I know what that sounds like when I do this in my studio, but curious how much is intentional on the part of the engineer. Thank you and have a marvelous day!

    • @bradleycook5747
      @bradleycook5747 5 років тому +1

      I think we used a 57/87 on the gtr cabs- capsules aligned for happy phase. 1084 neve pres. Prob just light eq. Didn't really push the pres. No compression in the recording of it. Its amp/player tone faithfully captured. There was certainly ssl eq and compression applied in the mix.

      Kind of a shame. Pure speculation, but it sounds to me that they tried to ProTools Williams drums to death, only for them to throw it away and Dave to do it straight to tape. The record ended up being a monster anyway with Dave on drums, but you have to wonder about what could've been. Comparing the first and second record is like two different bands in different eras even though its' only two years apart. I feel like there was a great transition there missed.
      And between that Sunny Day Real Estate rhythm section, the huge room at Bearsville, the legendary Gregg Keplinger doing drum teching and sounds ("Superunknown", anyone?) not to mention Dave saying before making it he'd drum on some of it anyway, specifically My Hero, it seems you'd have a recipe for a huge sounding record, and more of a fitting capstone to grunge. It probably would've been a lot "looser" record with William being most of the backbone, but that's not I guess what Dave and Gil ended up going for.
      Guitar wise I can tell you at the time Dave and Pat were both pretty big Dual Rectifier guys. That's about all I know. Dave had Gibson Explorers, a Les Paul and SG Customs, his Trini Lopez, and a bitchin' Gibson RD Standard at the time. Pat had a whole slew of weird old Hagstroms, a couple of Mosrite's, some SG's, a fully hollow Gibson Barney Kessel, and a ES-1275 doubleneck.

      Hi Carlos. I'm glad you dig that record. As far as the Ptools goes. Niether of us had the time or patience to Ptools it to death. If out Ptools guy had been there it may have been a dif story for William. It was pretty rough. Verses rushing, chorus' dragging. We tried our best w groovy click track, no clk etc. He had some sort of red light fright..

      @@bradleycook5747 Oh man. As a drummer myself, I've been there. Shame, because he is a great drummer in his own right. Say, I commented elsewhere on this page asking about your work on Rated R and that Distillers record, so if you ever do a part 2, that would be killer, or you could answer there. Really dig a lot the records you've worked on, Bradley.

    I’ve got an old electro-voice 660. Please do a bunch of interviews where world famous producers use so I can make a profit from selling it.

    great vid, but stop saying 'amazing' after every anecdote or fact Bradley tells.
