I'm very curious. I can understand the regular cowashing and plan on increasing it for myself. I might have missed you saying this but do you shampoo every now and then? I'm very concerned about the build-up potential, a'la the Wen and Deva Curl debacles! I think I'm still going to shampoo every other week or so.

Great question! Yes, I’m still shampooing but only 1-2 times per month. Then I’ll clarify many 1-2 times per year depending on what I feel my hair needs.
I plan to make an updated video to all the tweaks I’ve made since starting this method because my hair is literally thriving again with it all! ♥️🙌🏽

I did this method for years, and, per Dickey's suggestion, washed my hair with shampoo every week. He suggests a non-sudsing shampoo, but my hair was fine with a sudsing one depending on the ingredients. I clarify every eight weeks or when I feel I have too much build up. I also make sure to use a protein deep conditioner followed by a moisturizing conditioner when clarifying my hair.

The doux styling products are absolutely amazing. Sometimes i just use a deep conditioner and the crazy secy curl honey setting foam and OMG its amazing. I really want to use Anthony Dickeys products, like the ENTIRE line. His methods are literally timeless and have exponentialy improved my relationship with my hair. Im so incredibly grateful for him and everything he's done for the natural hair community. I'm a black man and since i was young i was always concerned with the heat damage and creamy crack that plauged our community. I saw what it did to my sisters hair growing up and how they struggled with their natural hair even to this day which is why ive been recommending his content and even doing his method on them and giving them the information to do it for themselves. Did the same with my nieces too. Awesome video

I’ve even used just leave-in on some of my co-wash days and my hair still comes out amazing. A couple things that never fails for people who have trusted this process (myself included), is that the most common reason we’ve stopped or tweaked the method is because 1) our hair got too long or 2) the moisture just starts to last longer and longer as your hair gets used to it.
People really don’t understand how dry we’ve kept our hair with relaxers and protective styles. This is just one of those processes I think every natural should try at least once in their journey.

    • @shelly.v.247

Thank you so much for this review. When I happened upon Anthony Dickey’s (AD) method for wash and go, it made so much sense because I had been realizing that my hair really loves water. I thought long and hard about doing it everyday though - but I decided to jump in and really give it a good try. The results - AMAZING! AD where have you been all my life?!?! But like @Shelly V said, all the AD content I saw on UA-cam was so dated, and that made me wonder if it was still true for today. Well, guess what? IT IS! Like Shelly V said, different product could give you different looks which is great. It is still a wash and go, but your hairs curls or lays differently.
    Pros:
    (1) allows me to easily try out hair products - after all I will be running water through my hair in the morning anyways.
    (2) my hair is so healthy, super moisturized and moves.
    (3) I have so much freedom with my hair these days, I am not worried about swimming, working out, being caught in the snow, etc.
    (4) I actually save move. Prior to now, I would buy expensive conditioners and use a peanut size once a week for my head-full of hair. It wasn’t doing much for me. But now, I buy regular conditioners and bathe my hair in them. Spend less, better results.
    (5) finger-detangling and elongating while saturated with conditioner makes my hair shed much less.
    (6) More confidence and willingness to unlearn other bad behavior I had learned about my hair.
    Cons:
    (1) Doing this every day, though I must say that when you master it, it is really pretty EASY. (2) Drying: I use a blow dryer to dry because I do not want to sit still under the hooded dryer. AD suggested adding mousse to your hair to help the drying process. I did and it works. I still blow dry 80% (gets there very quickly) and air dry the rest of the time, The mousse helps!
For those wondering when to shampoo - you wash your hair everyday so it is not really dirty. But I do shampoo twice a month just because I was wondering about product build up. But I am actually going to try shampooing once in 3 weeks and see.
Thank you @ShellyV. Thank you Anthony Dickey!

I started off years ago with the ADM. Dry time was my #1 culprit. I've never been able to do the quick 15-20 minute dryer sessions like everyone else. My hair is still extremely damp/wet. A diffuser would take another 30+ minutes. My #2 was product usage. Using quality products that often was top expensive for my budget. ADM wasn't sustainable for my lifestyle even though it definitely gave me the ease of styling & definition I loved.

Oh I feel you Sis. However, I use very inexpensive drug store products and I no longer style on super wet hair, which helps cut my drying time down significantly. I have also tweaked everything and created my own method where I only have to reset my hair once or twice per week. It’s been amazing and my hair is now thriving once again.💖🙌🏽

Lol I really walk around with wet hair all the time, even when it's cold. I'm grateful that they are making better mousses that work for curly hair now, that helps a lot with decreasing drying time. Luckily I don't have the type of job where it matters if my hair is wet, but I do have the type of job where washing my hair daily is a necessity sometimes. I also work 7 days a week, so I need something quick and easy, and I don't want to wear protective styles or cover my head.

Thanks to you I have read Hair Rules and now understand Dickey's wash and go process. My hair looks and feels amazing after following this process for 2 weeks! And I mean, AMAZING! ...I need a new avatar picture because my hair is longer. Just telling on myself, I don't follow it to a "T" (I use a cream cleanser every other day or every 2 days and shampoo every 7-8 days...for now) because I am afraid of and have experienced (in the past) build up. I'm working on trusting the process fully, however. In the meantime, mostly following his process has really done wonders for my hair! And let me just say, your hair looks gorgeous!

Hi Shelly! Previous experience: during the pandemic, I washed daily and enjoyed the best hair of my life. I discovered that I have 4a/4b hair that had been masquerading as 4C. Then I got lazy. Stopped doing it and experienced some damage as a result. Current experience: just started back with the daily wash and go. My hair is improving very fast and it is easier to do and feels more luxurious every day. My con is the drying time too. I always use a leave in. So far, my favorite is Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love. This morning, I sat under the dryer for an hour. I found that diffusing created a lot of frizz for me. Love your channel and thank you for saving me from getting a curly cut! Was about to drive several hours to go to Jersey to get a Rezo cut. You saved me time, money and frustration! Thanks again Curl Friend! 😘

I did this method a few years ago, way before BGC. Ironically, the downplaying of leave-ins and deep conditioning I learned from him, not BGC 😂 I loved how soft and defined my hair was when I did Anthony Dickie’s method but the drying process is why I stopped. I live in Ohio and we have cold winters. My job was also a 45 minute drive and I had to be there at 7:30. So, getting up extra early to wash and dry my hair(washing no problem) got to be too much. Air drying in the winter was a big NO-NO plus the shrinkage🥴 So I still for the most part wash and set weekly but I never ever stopped deep conditioning using heat. Deep conditioning with heat has my curls popping too.

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  Рік тому +4

Yeah I could totally see all of that being a problem! 🫣
I think with his method you could potentially go without a leave in or deep conditioner but I’ve learned my lesson with that! 🤣
I think the BGC method is so drying that it should not even be an option. At least for my hair it was. It literally almost destroyed my hair. 😝
I think like with everything, we gotta each find what works and stick to it. I’m confident now that I’ve found the best approach for my hair and it isn’t fully his method. It’s something in between. I also think with what I’m doing now I could easily go 5-7 days and be just fine. We shall see.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It’s extremely important and helpful to hear from people who have done it. 🥰🤗

  • @esthertjones
    @esthertjones Рік тому +19

I love that this worked for you!! It also seems to have given your hair that boost of hydration that you needed. (And it didn't take months and months!)
The 3 main things that have dissuaded me from fully embracing the method are:
    1. The cost of using so much conditioner all the time
    2. The drying time. I'm an air dry girlie, and I just can't commit that much time to standing/sitting around drying my hair &
    3. The shaking to set the curls. It'll give me a migraine, and while they say beauty is pain, that's not the life for me 😅
But I've definitely incorporated some of his techniques for WnGs since I discovered the hair rules channel at some point a while back.
    1. I usually do my styling inside the shower as part of my wash routine
    2. I don't usually use any kind of comb to define curls, just let the conditioner and other stylers do their thing.
    3. If I start from scratch a couple days in a row, I don't bother with shampoo, I just do what I call a "rinse & go."
I think there's a lot of good techniques from the Dickey method that can be taken and tweaked as necessary for personal styling routines.

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  Рік тому +8

Yup I feel you 100% on everything you stated Sis!
I think you have to take what works and leave behind what doesn’t.
I use very inexpensive conditioner and now that I only reset 2 times per week I’m not going through nearly as much.
I have yet to shake my head at all like that. I just don’t think my baby neck could handle that part of his method. Matter fact, I never mention it because I honestly forgot about it until you said something since I don’t do it.👀🤣
I have turned into more of an air drying girl myself. I will diffuse lightly and then let it air dry the rest of the way. However, I do use a heat protectant just to ensure my hair is fully protected at all cost! I ain’t playing around no more‼️‼️‼️Lol. 😆
Honestly, I’m no longer doing his method because I have made so many tweaks that he would probably be upset if I was still referring to it as his method.
My method involves a mixture of shampooing and co-washing. Going longer days in between resetting the hair and implementing leave-in and deep conditioner.
There are more tweaks I’ve made but I’ll need to do a video to cover everything. 😅
As usual, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I love how we are all learning from each other!💖🤗

I love his method. When I first consulted with him, I thought I had 4c hair. Nope. After cowashing everyday for a month, I had a completely different head of hair.
I get lazy with it sometimes and my hair tells on me pretty quickly. I’ve been chasing the 7-day wash and go everyone talks about but it’s not in the cards for me. The longer I go between wash and gos, the dryer and more fragile my hair becomes. Decided it was time to get back to Dickeys method. Now that it’s winter, I’m experimenting with every other night. My hair has already responded.
You don’t need expensive products to do this method. And. If you do it daily or every other day, your products aren’t staying in your hair long enough for you to suffer from build up quickly.
Give it a try. You’ve got nothing to lose.

I just started after watching your last few videos. I was doing the BGC method and my hair was very dry. I’m on day 4 of Anthony Dickey and my curls look completely different. I do the hard shake (which makes the process fast), sit under the hooded dryer for 15 minutes and I let it air dry. It’s much quicker than I thought. I have been doing this since before Anthony. Been doing it since 1980. I have also been cowashing since the late 90s ..... Before it was called cowashimg. Then came internet and we were told to plop and loc. I did that but curls were not the same. About 15yrs ago, I went back to it. Cowashing almost daily but sometimes just a thorough water rinse. I do use a diluted sulphate shampoo almost weekly and deep condition every week or 2. I clarify about every 8 weeks or so. I just follow how my hair feels. I am from a warm climate, so my hair airdries in warmer weather but I will diffuse on medium heat if necessary. I dont have issues with build up cos I don't use heavy products or if I do, I just dilute with plain water or hibiscus water or aloe vera juice/gel. I don't need a leave-in all the time though. I make my own gel with xanthan gum and the aforementioned liquids. I use very little oil. I prepoo out of habit. From childhood my hair was oiled the night before washing., I really don't think my hair needs it. Or I can skip the conditioning if I prepoo. I am way past all the unnecessary steps. If I prepoo I find that sometimes I can skip conditiiner. My hair isnt overly dry.

Hi Shelly Merry Christmas. Hopefully you still read these comments. Wanted to answer some of your con questions as I love Dickey and Hair rules. If you watch all his shorts and videos he does recommend cheaper products and ways to get the same results and thankfully he is so correct! I’ve been using all his products cleansing wash quench conditioner and curly whip and they’re all lovely and I smell like joy and peace! However as you know it’s a LOT of product to use and his stuff costs arms legs and fingers. He mentions Aussie conditioner and lotta body for setting! I first started out using Aussie in between quench sessions and it worked just as good THEN I ordered lotta body the condensed bottle from Amazon. I put 1/3 lotta with 3/3 water in a spray bottle stayed in the shower applied the leave in then the lotta body mix (just sprayed it all over) squeezed out the extra water then did my shake and my curls were INCREDIBLE! Just as good and maybe even BETTER than with his curly whip! I’ll tell you how to dry faster in the next comment

I set it for 20-23 seconds and then I just start from the top press it against my head then move down for the 20 seconds til I’ve gone the full way around my head. If it’s still damp the. I go back to those sections for like 10 seconds and I’m done. The first time I did this I started with 30 seconds and I’ll tell you that was too long and made my hair too dry. So like everything else it’s all trial and error. Good luck! I LOVE your results! Blessings in the new year!

Hi there... I tried this method recently for 2 days straight and the result was AWESOME on my 4a/4c hair. My 4c areas of my hair is VERY rude. However, with this method, the 4c areas were a little bit more manageable. I used the aussie moist conditioner, which is fairly inexpensive. I stop because of the drying time. I live in CT and it is a little chilly now for me to air dry. However, I will continue this method starting summer of 2024 when I can air dry my hair. Also, I can not wait to see the difference in my 4c areas of my hair during the summer. Love the content and keep up the good work!!! ❤

I agree with your assessment, have been using Dickey's method off and on for over a year now. I do it every other day and I use an inexpensive conditioner. Right now it's Tresemme which has been fantastic. And then on my wash days I use the expensive stuff. I use a leave in under the gel and my hair feels like butter. Today I tried the doux wash and go pop lock to see if I could get away with one product and my hair said, no ma'am, you need a leave in lol. I also have found that different leave in and gel combos have different results. The longest part though is the drying....whew chile. Today was super fast with the pop lock the caveat is my hair is crunchy, but with my normal combos it takes forever. But all in all my hair loves the Dickey Method.

I used a leave-in conditioner every wash day but only used a deep conditioner when I clarified my hair. My hair was at it's healthiest using this method; but I stopped because my hooded dryer broke, and I couldn't afford to buy a new one. I air dry and have not had a problem even in the winter (though I'm from West Texas). I can't have wet hair at night, but during the day is fine. The biggest issue for me is you never get to the great nice beautiufl 2nd or 3rd day hair ... or not at least until 2 p.m. when it's dry. But as I said,I'm a daily exerciser and I do sweat in my head, so I had to start this because I didn't know how to keep my curls. I also used the purple maui moisture. @@shelly.v.247

I think that it is up to the individual as to how often you apply the Dickey method. For myself I have finer hair due to being post- menopausal. My hair sheds quite a bit as a result, so I shampoo my hair every 3 to four days and then on the 4th or 3rd day I apply the Dickey method without shampooing.I also use mostly creams and butters, very little gel, and I don’t sweat in my head, even when exercising. I want to try this method again, but I really can't atm. I am a mom of 3 with a newborn. My curls are a lot like yours, but my hair is hip length, so it takes for ever to dry. I might try it next summer, but I'm not sure, just because of how long my hair takes to dry.
I have been protective styling, because it's just easier to put my hair up when you have a baby or even a toddler. I'm thinking I will start using a no suds shampoo more often while reducing the amount of times I use a suds shampoo.
Wearing my hair up is already so helpful though. My hair feels so much more hydrated at the end of the week, it's crazy.
Have you seen his advice on a regime combines wash and goes and protective styling? You might want to look into that.

I personally have never done protective styles, other than wearing a braid or a bun for extended periods of time. Meaning, I would take it down daily and redo it. My hair did really well doing that. However, it was waste length as well, and I could easily put it away that way.
From doing his method, I think with the right tweaks I can easily go 5 to 7 days in my wash and go and not have to do it daily. Matter fact, I no longer do it daily at all.
I love that we are all sharing and learning from each other. It makes me so happy!

I’m taking the plunge. What was stopping me is the drying part. I live in the north east part of Canada (Montreal). I should of tried this summer but too much stuff going on. I have a hooded dryer so I can use it for 30 minutes and diffuse. Of course when I should do the process (I’m thinking in the afternoon after work since I work from home )

I have been horrified to try wash and goes for myself, but I think I am ready now. I wish you would have done a part 6 so we could see your results with the detangeling after going 3 days. Nevertheless, thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. By-the-way, your hair is absolutely gorgeous! I also love your energy and personality. 😊

Aww thank you so very much beautiful! I’m so happy to hear my little mini series was helpful. I almost filmed the part you mentioned but I didn’t think anyone wanted to hear about that part. 😅
However, I’m happy to tell you about it. I’ve noticed the longer I go in between washes the more time it takes for me to reset my hair. Why??? Because of the tangles. It probably added like 15-20 additional minutes onto my wash and go. Other than that it was easy breezy.
Also, the hardest part in my whole routine is when I wash my hair with a regular shampoo. Which is necessary for me during the month. My hair usually tangles up pretty good when I wash it like that. It’s the part I currently dislike the most. lol. I will say as my hair becomes healthier this whole process becomes easier.
Thank you for being here and finding my channel. I always love connecting with new curl friends! Hope my response makes sense and is helpful. 💖🤗

Ok! Everything you said makes perfect sense. I was so excited to try this method and was way past due for a wash, so I went for it. I felt in my heart of hearts, I needed to wash and condition my hair in sections the way I usually do, then try this method maybe a few days later. But I couldn't wait. I was too excited and curious to see how this method would work on hair that wasn't recently set.
The day before I washed, I had taken my hair out of a 4 week protective style and detangled it. I jumped in the shower to start this method but began with a good shampoo. It was a TOTAL DISASTER, lol! Nevertheless, I was still able to see the effectiveness of this method. But with you saying what you said, I think going forward I will continue the shampooing in large twisted sections.
If you are interested in knowing, I blew dry my hair and put it in bantu knots with flat twist in the front. I figure I'll practice the technique for the washing part now, and hopefully, I'll be able to "go" by spring and summer. 😀

@@Tina-gt6tz Ohhhhh snap! Yeah I could have told you do NOT go immediately into the shampoo phase after having your hair up for 4 weeks! 👀😓 Girl that hair will tangle and matte up like no one’s business because of all the shed hairs built up within it.
I don’t have license the first so take what I say with a grain of salt. Lol. BUT……. I’d always recommend using a prepoo after any style that’s been worn for numerous days or weeks!!! The African Pride coconut & aloe prepoo is the bomb! It literally makes the tangles melt away and allows you to detangle your hair super easily.

I have a question for you … I recall you mentioned before when trying to assess what caused your hair dehydration and damage, that one factor could possibly be the use of the hooded dryer, so now that you are doing this method, you are using the hooded dryer more frequently, do you have any concerns about that? Back when I did the co-wash method years ago, I use to air dry.

    • @shelly.v.247
      @shelly.v.247  Рік тому +2

Awesome question! I’m still torn on the hooded dryer and whether or not I think I need to be concerned with using it frequently. Part of me thinks my hair is less vulnerable to anything negative happening because my hair is being protected by this process. The other part of me isn’t certain. So I’ve started to use a heat protectant before I dry my hair. I also have started to mainly diffuse a little then air dry the rest of the way. I’m also not resetting my hair daily because I no longer need to now.
With all the tweaks I’ve made with my hair routine I only have to reset my hair twice each week and that’s because I want to. TBT, I think I could get away with only doing it once.
So to answer your question, the hooded dryer is the only part of my new hair care routine that I’m still not 100% sure about. I guess time will tell all.

Basically you shampoo, condition, and then use their leave in conditioner as a styler. No you dont get perfect curls like with a gel, but you get nice moisturized hair that has decent curl definition. I feel like as long as your shape is shaping you dont really need perfect definition.

    • @shelly.v.247

I don’t think there’s such thing as “bad” hair in terms of curls for anyone. However, I do think we have to consider the health of the hair. As we know there’s healthy hair and damaged hair! For me that’s where it begins and ends. So I personally wish we in the natural hair community could get away from saying someone’s hair is considered bad if it doesn’t curly up. I just don’t like that and I honestly think it’s wrong and creates division amongst us. 😔
I also now feel that we shouldn’t be forcing our hair to do things it doesn’t want to do like curl up. If it’s not there with just water and conditioner a person may want to think twice. That’s not to say we can’t wear our curls but it may not be advantageous to wear it as our routine style. Idk just my thoughts as I navigate through this hair journey. 🤷🏽‍♀️
