Would y'all be interested in seeing how this bass stacks up against a Fender Standard Jazz Bass?!
Patrick Hunter sure! Wish it was rosewood tho
Heck yeah!
Just do it!!! xD
Yes please do it!
Ofcourse!
Thomann is just quality stuff overall, I only live an hour away, so I come there often. They are the sweetest people too, think german country people, but in the biggest music store on the continent. Best customer service I have ever encountered too. Nothing but love for them!
you are a lucky person!!
I ordered based on this review I just got it an hour ago. All I can say is that it is beautiful. I can’t believe they can sell this so inexpensive. Thanks for doing this video because of you I now have a decent bass guitar.
Just wanted to tell everyone not to be afraid to buy a cheaper bass because odds are that with the money u saved u can get the best pickups out there lol.
I play a squier jaguar short scale bass ($180) with geezer butler pj pickups ($153) and sounds waaaaay too good
Samuel Elgueta
Dude damn right the GZR pick ups are lit af !
My exact set up too! With a fender hi-mass bridge. I play it through a Marshall
This! Sleeper basses are great because they are also less likely to be stolen if it looks cheaper ;)
Yep. As a sound man, I'd say if you get a budget 600 quids or less, get a budget bass like this, get the pup you want, and get a good DI.
I was considering getting Geezer's signature EMG pj pickups for my Yamaha TRBX 174. Roughly the same price of a squire affinity
Great vid, found on a search. Love the stuff you play, man!
I have a American standard Jaguar bass and got one of these for band practice, the fender was 10x the price of the hb but no way is it 10 times 'less good??' ,it's a fantastic bass not even for the price- it just is. the neck isn't a jazz neck but is still totally playable, pickups sound fantastic too. I find myself using it more than the fender now. The only thing was - I had to return the first bass I ordered as the qc had passed a badly put together example but Thomann paid for return and I got an amazing bass back!!
I got this bass, it sounds great!
Changed the hardware with gold, looks killer
hey, I bought the same bass, and it came yesterday, haha !
It's really heavy to play 1-2 hours standing up?
@@chinelitomx yes it is really heavy
Strongly Considering Buying This Bass. Your Reviews Help A Lot!
More Harley Benton please. Mb4?

I own this bass. Swapped the pots and output Jack and had a series/parallel push/pull installed. I play this more than my Fender Jazz. Amazing bass.
Clint Knuckler is the neck finished with gloss?
How is the quality of the fretwork?
Have three of their guitars and just ordered this base. The guitars are amazing for the money.
Cool. This is my one and only bass, so I can't compare, but it works for me :).
I agree, the frets are a bit sharp on the sides.
I got mine last week and I love it. I’m still scratching my head trying to figure out how they can be so cheap. The only negative I have is that it is heavy but I play seated. Fret ends are fine on mine.
I heard it's because the company sells direct instead kf through a third party and does minimal advertising so the overhead is less than a lot of companies
I bought one of these for my brother. The tones are all perfect, though it is heavier than my Fender Jazz which doesn't sound as good.
This is the best offering by Harley Benton regarding jazz basses. You're getting an American Ash body, alnico jazz pickups, a beefy 'D'-profile neck, Wilkinson standard jazz bridge with brass saddles. And can be purchased NEW from Thomann currently for $155 USD, plus shipping depending on where you live. I own the natural ash model.........You will never beat Harley Benton on value for your buck. You can't even buy a Fender Squier new at that price, and their quality is not as good as the Harley Benton.
Patrick, u r the master! Love ur shredding. 😎
no davie504 is
I just bought one of these. It is probably the most beautiful JB I have ever owned.. Fit finish setup and sound were amazing. I will most likely seldom play it however. It weighs so much that it fatigues you within minutes. I tried using it for a recording session sitting down and it's weight almost immediately cut off the circulation in my leg. It was painfully heavy in my lap..I am unsure how Harley Benton could get so much right and then ruin it all by making it a ship anchor!
Hi there ! I was looking to buy this model but suddenly faced with this weight complaints from people who've bought it. But no matter how much I like how it looks and plays when I see a comment like yours about 5.6kg of weight while the average bass should weight around 3.8-4.2kg I understand that that's a huge difference. And I wouldn't like to have this anchor neither on my lap nor shoulders. Is it really that noticeable ? Thanks
I have one of these too, with a "rosewood" fingerboard, had to do a bit finetuning for the neck, plays and sounds great. A heavy piece of good sounding wood.
Hi Patrick! Did you keep it then? How well has it aged? Would you still recommend it or would you have another one in mind in the same price point?
I ordered one came setup perfect plays awesome I have over 75 basses in my arsenal and love to play this at gigs people tell me the tone is killer and don't believe it when I tell them under $200
The harley benton bass sounds amazing, gotta check one out at guitar center! thanks for the demo!
arturo Acosta These aren’t available in guitar center or anywhere outside of Thomann‘s headquarters.
Anything sounds good when you’ve got Darkglass gear!
I like the headstock sadowsky/mm hibryd
I have a vintage modified Jazz and Precision bass. The jazz has been upgraded with EMG JV52s $127 and the Precision with Duncam QPs $124. Both basses sound amazing. I am all for inexpensive basses and this one sounds pretty good.
Hi Artyom - You should get no problems with shipping. Thomann packaging was good and speedy. I bought a Ukelele from them also and that was a good experience. I'm after a Sire u5 next!.
Cheers, Dave.
I am considering this bass for learning. I already play guitar, and I would like to play bass too. My biggest concern was that it might not stay in tune, but if it really does (considering the price) I might give it a chance. I was also thinking about looking for a second hand Classic Vive Jazz Bass. Sorry if I made mistakes, English isn't my mother language. Cheers!
hey, this bass is really good. I bought one 6 months ago, and i love it! I recorded some videos, could check my video and give your opinion? ua-cam.com/video/5OI3bIYiyVQ/v-deo.html
Please do a demo of how this sound against the Fender Jazz Bass and the Squier Troy Sanders
How do you feel about this bass now Patrick? Thank you for your reviews and I could watch you play all day.
Thank you so much dude! And it's a great bass, but I would sand the neck down to make it thinner and that's it!
@@patrickhunter I used 1500 grit sandpaper paper on the back of my HB JB neck just to give it a silky smooth feel. Very pleased.
Hey Patrick.
Have you ever had the chance to try Sire by Marcus Miller basses ? If yes, how do you think they do, comparing to these HB ?
Keep up the good work, man !
Cheers.
sire v3 and harley benton pb50 i own and both i like much but the yamaha bb234 is the bass to go with !
@@bertbregdenz2756 interesting, what makes the bb234 the better bass? I have been considering the Yamaha too and the sire v3.
@@wildebassman its more versatile with the pj configuration, cheap, nice neckfeel, passiv etc...bread and butter bass ! sire + harley benton i have sold now... listen to the yamaha 234 video (young man with hat and red bass) !!!
@@bertbregdenz2756 thanks for the input.
@@wildebassman read the bonedo test (5* result)
Please do the Harley Benton PJ Bass review too.
Do you think the JB-75 NA Vintage Series makes a difference to the JB-75MN SB Vintage Series?
they usually use the nicer looking wood for the sunburst finish, that's about the only difference
On mine, when I pull the neck volume knob up, it switches the pickups from parallel wiring to series. Nice.
The HB sounds awesome! Killer playing. 👍 thanks for posting.
I just bought a Harley Benton enhanced jm 4mn and I was wondering how long your jazz bass took to get here. I also bought mine through Thomann
Sounds pretty cool.
Canada september 2022 : around 335$ cdn shipping , taxes and duties from UPS.
$155 USD here in the states + $80 shipping.
Love my HB🎶♥️
So Patrick, by American Ash do you mean Hard Ash? Cuz if so, that would be even cooler than getting the typical Swamp Ash wood for the body.
Thanks for any info.
Great review vid man!!
Are you running it through your Darkglass b7k pedal?
I've seen their guitar demo's which are always good but I've never seen any bass demo's, have you seen seen the Xavier Basses from Guitar Fetish? They are the same concept but here in the USA, they run about $170.
Hell to the yes!!! BTW ever consider hanging up a Steve McQueen Bullitt poster on your wall?
Shipping for these has doubled . It's round $75 now !
You can´t get it BETTER, this is a hammer!!!! Every word you say is TRUE!!!
BEST BASS for the money..
If you want replace the PU´s with Kloppmann JB-61 and change the mini-potis crap;)
Nice Review!
What strings are on the bass in the video?
Thanks friend, and just the stock Daddario's were on the bass at the time!
Patrick Hunter
Ah ok.
After i wrote the question i saw the part in the video where you have told it. haha
Thanks anyway for the reply.
Take care!
Can this be purchased in the US?
Patrick Hunter, good video, but I would also demo the bass with a pick for those of us who play bass with a pick.
Literally the first thing he does is play with a pick
🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣
:44 love that riff!
In my HB there are no Roswell pickups but Wilkinson. I believe this is the only difference.
Early ones used Wilkinson hardware
hello, you play really nice, i am thinking of buying this bass, but i would like to ask a few questions, the aspect and price make this bass very tempting and i would not like to spend more then i have to,i am thinking between this or the squier vintage modified 70, i reallize that this is a cheap bass and it costs literraly half than what the squier costs, but like i said i dont wanna spend more than i have to,especially if its my first bass but i would not like to buy the worst and cheapest just for the sake of buying, and after a year i am forced to change it and buy a new one. I want a bass that will last me a few years ! I would like to know is this is a good quality bass ? if its comfortable to play, if the electronics sound bad? is there string buzzing or noise from the amp when you play ? or buzzing from the pickups when you turn one off or on ? How well does it stay in tune ? and most importantly are there any sharp frets sticking out from the neck ? Is this bass worth it and is it worse than the squier? which one would you recomad ?
Hey @Patrick, what do jou have in your signal chain to get that crazy tone at 1:22?! Sounds amazing!
Ah ... just noticed ... malekko diabolik ... me wants ... Rrrrrrrr
Maple fingerboard its always the best for jazz bass
Do you have any experience with the Samick Cobra or Tabu bass?
I just ordered one I mean honestly how can you beat that for the money?!
Yes pls, put it against the fender!
just bought one. soooo low cost. they are selling telecaster for 68 quid. shockingly low. whats the catch lol
Shure, sounds wery good when you play it : )
I found a reseller of a squire classic 70s jass bass that's been set up and in good condition for $250. Should I get that or the hb? With shipping the hb is $274 and I would have to set it up. Please help me choose my first bass thanks!
i think that both are very good. some Squier had saymour duncan pickups, if so, can be better. could check my video and give your opinion? ua-cam.com/video/5OI3bIYiyVQ/v-deo.html
What happened with the string “E” at 3:21? Is it too loose?
What is the weight of this bass brother. It sounds great.
It is something like 11 lbs.,.....it's a boat anchor.
is it good enough to small to medium gigs?
With these reasonable quality instruments on sale for new, it makes me wonder if newby basser's would want to buy a used Epiphone or Squire for instance?? I just bought the HB Fretless jazz, and its great.
Was it set up out of the box? The string action, scale, etc? I just ordered same fretless JB and waiting for it now
@@artemikRus I don't think you will be disappointed. It was a reasonable set up out of the box and great to play. Great action, and it looks like without the frets, you can get it as low as you like. I fiddled with it later for my own amusement, but a great bass. As with a lot of new basses, it seams, they should have supplied it with flat wound strings, which I swopped. It sounds great with the round wound that came with it however. I was glad of the lines on the fretboard too!
@@davelock3166 thank you so much for sharing your impressions, cause there are not many reviews of that model. Flatwounds out of the box, I think, would raise the price of that bass, and for some people its sound may be unusual and change overall first impression. I can’t wait to get my FL, and hope that it will be shipped with no problems
Hey Good Day. May I ask is it heavier than 'normal' bass guitar? do you think it is a heavy one? I am a guitar player and doesnt like heavy one as it is a bit hard when you stand when playing a heavy one.... thx!
It's 11 lbs.
Do you still have this one? I'm curious to see how it held up.
ua-cam.com/video/gDLykV-dJPQ/v-deo.html
Can you please say more about the neck dimensions? How does it compare to a Fender standard in thickness and width at either ends?
Chris V
The neck is about 37mm (1,5in) wide at the nut, and 53mm (2.1in) at the 20th fret.
It's 23mm (0.9in) thick at the nut and 26mm (1.05in) at the body.
38mm nut width. nice n skinny
which do you think worth more than it's price this or the PB-20
i really wanna know since im choosing between these two to buy.
Jb75
Hey Patrick,.. do you remember what website you bought this bass from ?
It's a Harley Benton from thomannmusic.com/
How does this stack up against the Squire Active Jazz bass? Build quality? Playability?
I have this exact one and a deluxe active squier, just played both a bit and the main difference i can tell is that the squier has lighter and less used strings because i never play it. Both are comparable even to my warwick in regards of playability. And well, the active electronic sounds like active electronics, good but i just prefer not having to keep track of batteries in my instrument. Both are tanks (and heavy) in regards to build and the HB has seen fair ammounts of abuse (dropped, thrown, etc) without getting a scratch. I originally bought the HB as a backup but ended up using it to play entire gigs. For the price its an absolute no brainer, be it as a cheap backup or you main instrument. The wood used on mine is also so beautiful i first thought it was printed. I'm planning on also getting the P version at some point in time, wich a friend of mine even used to record an album. I'd say the only reason to get a squier over this is if you want active, but even then you could probaply replace the electronics on this one and still be cheaper.
How long to get these in the US? Are they stocked in the US or does it take months?
It takes about a week or longer from Germany depending on where you live.
This is get a Sire?
I’d love to be excited for stuff like this but I find it hard. Do you know where these are made? I can’t help but think they can sell them so cheap because the workers are probably getting paid next to nothing.
Aka Gob they're made in the same factories as Epiphones and other imports. Thomann saves money because they have no distribution costs or middle-men to pay. They pass those savings to the customer.
Almost all of your clothes are made by such people.. Sadly.
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
Any idea what the “MN” means in the name of this bass? I’m interested to know because it’s also my initials.
Maple Neck
Hey Patrick,
I'm staring at my 12-13lb. '79 Fender Jazz as I ask, "How much does the Harley Benton JB-75MN weigh?"
Is it a 60's or 70's bridge pickup spacing?
Thanks!
Mine weighs about 5.2kg, or 11.5lbs.
The space between the pickups is 3.6 inches, so 60's I think.
Mine weighs 4,9kg's
DeviLin Disguise
What’s weird is that Thomann gives different weights for different colours...?
I have the black one, which is apparently the heaviest.
Mine`s the black one as well. 300 gramms are negligible. Might as well be within the tolerance of different scales.
How did you get that fuzzy sound at 1:23?
fuzz pedal?
Is this comparable to better Squier or Squier Affinity?
WAY above Squier Affinity imo and above Squier Classic Vibe/Vintage Modified!
@@patrickhunter damn! So more comparable to Made in Mexico Fender? The pickups are better than Squier?
Squier isn't even in the same league as these basses,....and you'll name see a brand new Squier being offered at the sub - $200 range.
This or a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale bass, that one is only $200.
Yamaha bb234 !
I really can't decide which colour to get 😔😔😔
There are way bigger problems to have my friend :D
i got it for 129 including shipping
I know some time has gone by but, where did you get yours?
Compare it to a Fender Standard Jazz!
Aren't you being too picky for 140 semolians???
About how heavey is this bass? I'm a guitar player that is looking for a good starter bass that isn't very heavy.
I heard it's quite heavy, if you are in the market for a solid light bass, you might look towards an Ibanez.
With Kloppmann JB-61 Pickups (300 Euro) EVEN BETTER, but don´t forget to change the minipotis, they CRAP
PU's sound muddy
this bass is too heavy, next to 5 kg.
it is true! i never more went to gym.
Так лучше
You really think a cheap bass made in China is made from American and Canadian wood. The factory in China imports premium timber from North America and turns it into instruments at below cost and then sends them to Germany? And then Germany sends them to America?
For $139? Have you any idea of the value of..... ANYTHING?!
Nor do any of the prominent brands for their entry-level and mid-range product ranges which are largely produced in China/Asia these days.
ps. It still amuses me to no end how Fender et al owners moan about Chinese "knock-offs" while the only thing Thomann/Harley Benton do is designing their own product lines based on (bass)guitar archetypes and having them produced in above mentioned regions. Just like pretty much every other company. There' a lot of confirmation bias and sour grapes going around since HB stepped up their game a couple of years ago.
Don´t waste your money
You play WAY TOO HARD!
ur slap tone sounds like u are influenced by davie504 ,i really wish they made this in 5 :(
The bass is very heavy and the sound is sucks
Sounds awful, how can it be the best budget bass? Did you tune it to DGCF? how the strings shake like that? Pls don’t use effect to demo a bass! Thanks.
It's in standard tuning, the camera he uses makes it seem as if the string are very floppy
