In Greece the lamb gyros we call it doner. Gyros is made of pork or in late years from chicken and it's called gyros because "gyro" means around because of the way it is roasted. Here we eat 2-3 times a week souvlaki. Many people eat almost every night souvlaki. The authentic greek souvlaki in the older years was made of a pie, a pork skewer and only tomatoes and onions and it was small in size. Gyros, potatoes, tzatziki, sauce, chicken gyros, chicken skewers, ketchap, mustard, chicken-bakon came later.
I'm Greek, love gyros and eat every week but this looks so crap... If this is the best gyros in Chicago, imagine how other gyros restaurants will be...
Friendly Sheep You are totally right! When I saw the show-hoster slinging down that 30cm stripe of (formed meat) I could have puked. The Gyros / Kebab one should look for, consists not of a pile of fatty, shiny pressed and formed meat Towers, but for "YAPRAK / JAPRAK KEBAB" which is Turkish and the meat pile consists of selected poor-fat layers of high Quality FILETS. (so: no compressed machine-processed "meat"). Restaurants offering Yaprak Kebab are hard to find; also here in central Europe, but they do exist. The Kebab of course costs more, but you are sure to get the best from the best.
+gandalf the weedzard Its because of the lamb. In greece the classic gyros are filled with pork and pork usually breaks when cut, its not that elastic.
gandalf the weedzard hmm doner has more stuff into it, more sauces, different sorts of salads, its basically taste chaos, there way too many ingredients. Gyros are more at a harmony.
FireAndIce yeah im from greece and thats NOT gyros.first of all this is made of lamb - exactly the same meat that doner is made of.Secondly , the real gyros is made of either chicken or pork.Thirdly, the real gyros does NOT look like this
The meat is not traditional gyros meat (you can see it's a mix) and it looks more like doner. Doner though has yogurt and not tzatziki. So this is kind of a mix of the two combining my two favorite elements of the two kinds.

Greek gyros has tzatziki and pork not doner meat mix. So this is neither traditional gyros nor doner. Although if it's good who cares? :P I would eat it gladly. :D

Depends how much kings 2 on Milwaukee is better they have fresh cut fries and it’s 9 bucks with tax for a plate.
That painfully obvious product placement though...
Those who keep saying it’s not Greek gyros it’s doner, this is how most gyros places in the area serve it. And it’s delish!
Yea it’s pretty yummy. I call these American Greek gyros
this aint no gyros ! this looks like kebap but nothing like real gyros
So, it is not by chance that most people in Greece, compliment northern Greece for its abundant food and richness of flavours... However if you want to experience roasted whole lambs on spits, or kokoretsi then a trip to Greece during our Easter holidays will leave most people drooling ...Also the areas of Thessalia(central Greece) and Pelloponisos(southern parts of Greece) are all experts on spit roasted lambs or goats all year round...Thanx for reading..
