    In Greece the lamb gyros we call it doner. Gyros is made of pork or in late years from chicken and it's called gyros because "gyro" means around because of the way it is roasted. Here we eat 2-3 times a week souvlaki. Many people eat almost every night souvlaki. The authentic greek souvlaki in the older years was made of a pie, a pork skewer and only tomatoes and onions and it was small in size. Gyros, potatoes, tzatziki, sauce, chicken gyros, chicken skewers, ketchap, mustard, chicken-bakon came later.

    That "secret recipe" gyro meat roasting in those pits looks suspiciously like mass produced gyro loaves produced in meat plants.

      Friendly Sheep You are totally right! When I saw the show-hoster slinging down that 30cm stripe of (formed meat) I could have puked. The Gyros / Kebab one should look for, consists not of a pile of fatty, shiny pressed and formed meat Towers, but for "YAPRAK / JAPRAK KEBAB" which is Turkish and the meat pile consists of selected poor-fat layers of high Quality FILETS. (so: no compressed machine-processed "meat"). Restaurants offering Yaprak Kebab are hard to find; also here in central Europe, but they do exist. The Kebab of course costs more, but you are sure to get the best from the best.

    • @JoaniMaster
      @JoaniMaster 8 років тому +5

      +gandalf the weedzard Its because of the lamb. In greece the classic gyros are filled with pork and pork usually breaks when cut, its not that elastic.

    • @theofaniskotsonis8490
      @theofaniskotsonis8490 8 років тому +20

      +JoaniMaster exactly! This is more like doner! true gyros is from pork , and as result it differs from doner both in taste and look!

    • @JoaniMaster
      @JoaniMaster 8 років тому +2

      gandalf the weedzard hmm doner has more stuff into it, more sauces, different sorts of salads, its basically taste chaos, there way too many ingredients. Gyros are more at a harmony.

    • @Gilmaru
      @Gilmaru 7 років тому +5

      The meat is not traditional gyros meat (you can see it's a mix) and it looks more like doner. Doner though has yogurt and not tzatziki. So this is kind of a mix of the two combining my two favorite elements of the two kinds.

    • @Gilmaru
      @Gilmaru 7 років тому +6

      ***** Yes, "made of", not "the same as". Tzatziki also has garlic that makes it's taste much more intense. Turkish doner has yogurt, not tzatziki. Greek gyros has tzatziki and pork not doner meat mix. So this is neither traditional gyros nor doner. Although if it's good who cares? :P I would eat it gladly. :D

      @Ahmet Yükseltürk You're right, how did I not think of that, it's obsiously a turkish word in origin. If that's the case and I was in Turkey, I would always eat my doner with tzatziki for sure. :) I have been in a couple of places in Greece where they make doner and they didn't even have tzatziki and I perhaps thought you don't eat them together.

    European Greeks in particular are jumping all over the ground lamb and beef mixture known here in the USA as gyros meat. The following will hopefully clear things up: Greeks who emigrated here in the 1960s and 1970s opened restaurants and consistently served the Turkish version which was assumed to be Greek, since they prepped the food and made no mention of its Turkish origin at all. Why the original pork meat wasn't used is a mystery---the restaurants were all located in Christian neighborhoods. No taboo there against eating pork.

In Greece Gyros is made from pork cuts, seasoned, skewered and grilled on a vertical spit.And it is the standard in Greece... Also, there are variations between Northern greece and Southern Greece. Lamb chops are a universal delicacy and my mouth is watering right now...

    Athens standards..Pita, (rarely bun or other..) gyros, mustard, ketchup, tzatziki, onions, tomato slices, fries? (not all stores serve fries).Much smaller than the Northern counterparts, most shops use very little fries and the pita sandwiches are smaller..and compacted.

    If you plan to travel to Thessaloniki (my home city..) make sure you ask for "gyros" and NOT "souvlaki". Southern Greeks(Athens mostly) when they say souvlaki they mean gyros(???). Gyros=something that rotates, in greek(literaly), Souvlaki= small skewer(literaly). So, a small pork or chicken kebab is called souvlaki, but strips of rotating grilled pork is Gyros...In Athens, souvlaki is also called "kalamaki" meaning small bamboo skewer...

    Best Gyro I have ever had is Golden Gyros in Milwaukee on Lincoln Ave. They only accept cash and are also are a custard place which is excellent as well! Never had a better Gyro sandwich yet and their tzatziki sauce is the creamiest ever! Always ask for a Gyro with extra meat! U won't regret it!!!!

    Gyro is a poor man's donair. From Cape Breton, have ate donairs forever, been to the states and central Canada, had Gyros, don't hold a candle to worst donair(best donairs are made with medium lamb.

    Since the meat is lamb instead of pork, it doesn't count as traditional Greek Gyros. I bet it's quite satisfying, nevertheless. Also, the Video Category made me chuckle!

  • @bg147

    I prefer when they use a traditional knife when slicing the meat, but this looks good.

    • @viniv20
      @viniv20 10 років тому +2

      purely aesthetic, with a nice or with this machine, the meat will still taste the same.
      negative about this machine : it's not traditional, positive thing about this machine, if your worker stops and you need to find another one, he'll learn this in a weeks time, while traditional with a knife it'll take him at least half a year to do propper cuts

    The wanna be Gyros looks so cheap. That´s only ground meat and has nothing to do with good chunks of meat put on a rotary spit, as I know really good Gyros made by Greeks in Germany.

    So, it is not by chance that most people in Greece, compliment northern Greece for its abundant food and richness of flavours... However if you want to experience roasted whole lambs on spits, or kokoretsi then a trip to Greece during our Easter holidays will leave most people drooling ...Also the areas of Thessalia(central Greece) and Pelloponisos(southern parts of Greece) are all experts on spit roasted lambs or goats all year round...Thanx for reading..
