400D looks super warm to me, very stylistic. I wonder if it was just the location. I can’t wait to shoot it. It might be my go-to film for warm portraits with blown out skies. Aka the light and airy look.
Karin, your large format camera experience (as well as the pin-hole camera) was a total joy to see! I’m retired now so it was a nice flashback and reminds me of my own early years of learning and exploring the possibilities in the world of photography. Of course it is unlimited as long as your desire and passion for capturing images keeps you learning and exploring, a quest you are clearly following. After you've achieved 4x5 status, beware there are also 8x10 cameras out there or go in the opposite direction with a Minox 16mm spy camera. Thank you for sharing your experiences and keeping up the excellent work! All the best!
Hey Ron, thanks so much for your kind comment, I appreciate it a lot! :) It's really fun collection new experiences in the photography world and sharing them with others online. I am well aware of the danger of 8x10 - I have to admit that those larger formats are incredibly tempting and fascinating but luckily the price point is holding me back and appreciate all the smaller film formats haha. All the best to you as well!
I supported the initial run though I ordered 120mm format. The images look lovely considering you and Elmar exposed the film in overcast weather. Definitely a film to use in Portugal during sunny conditions.
Great review! The photo you took of the man at 3:07 is awesome! $25 per roll is insane!! I was lucky enough to get my first rolls of 400D pretty quickly also and I made a video testing it in Chicago under many different lighting conditions. This film looks super different in sunny and overcast weather but equally good in both! It's not bad at night either! :)
Thanks for your comment! That‘s good to know, I will absolutely have to try it out in different lighting conditions and maybe even at night as well. I will make sure to check out your video! :)
I assume Cinestill does not have any other choice since they are very dependend on the price Kodak asks for the stock. And no worries, I got you covered! 🤫
I think it's a bit too warm for me, but of course that can be depending on the scan anyway. I'm sucker for 400 speed color films, so I will try it for sure! Also thanks for showing one of my images on PortraitMode! Liebe Grüße aus Tokyo o/
It is indeed very warm. I did not do any editing on the scans at all, but in the future I might prefer to make the images a tiny bit cooler. Ahh nice, what a coincidence with your Image in portraitmode! I hope you enjoy the platform so far :)
@@KarinMajoka Yeah I like it so far! Signed up thanks to one of your videos of course. Do you have a video of the scanning process used in this one? Usually tends to affect white balance quite a bit in my experience.
Karin, I don't get to your videos often, but when I do, it is well worth it. Like the images of Cinestill 400D. The colors look warm and pleasing--much like the artist who shot the pictures. I sometimes shoot w Fuji Provia 100F and have seen it priced at $30 per roll, so I agree it doesn't seem a good value to pay such prices for one roll of film. Unsure whether film companies will argue it is due to supply chain issues or what. Enjoy your work, wit and smiles. All the best 👍
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it :) yes, some film prices have risen to an extent where it‘s hard to justify the purchase. I think Cinestill 400D will be cheaper once it‘s available in the stores. This time it was only that expensive because the shipping costs and importing taxes have been that high.
@@KarinMajoka Yes I realized when I looked at your last few videos. I think maybe I've only just caught up with a few and re watched some of your older ones. My personal favourite is the one at the camera shop in Berlin where you develop the pictures. Thanks anyway, all great videos.
Hi Karin. Did you try Silbersaz35 films. You shoot on original motion picture film witch are developed exactly like Hollywood movies in our photo camera?
Love your videos! I'm heading to Berlin on October 1 to shoot POV photography as well and go around for 5 days! Your videos are such an inspiration and hope I could bump into you!
That looked like a lot of fun! I keep going back and forth between the color saturation of the box exposure speed and the more restrained colors of the overexposure. I really like the color rendition overall, at both speeds. You've convinced me to buy some, but I really hope it's less than the equivalent of $25 Euros a roll here in the states. I'll let you know how much it is here. Andy
I am sure it's cheaper directly in the US, since Cinestill has their headquarters in LA, so I guess the additional costs for shipping and importing taxes do not happen when bought directly in the US. Fingers crossed you will find some rolls! :)
Well, inspired by Matt Murray, I intend to shoot a roll or two at ISO 1600 around sunset. I was actually at a perfect location with magnificent light for that during my summer vacation, but while I did order very early on, I didn't pick early bird options, but rather went for a combination of 35mm and 120 film with expected delivery in early August, so I'm still waiting. It doesn't help, that there have been delays. Apparently the delays were made public - but mainly in newsletters with titles concerning other Cinestill products, so I never noticed. It would have been a more honest approach by Cinestill to send out a newsletter about the status of 400D instead of hiding it like they did, but I guess that's the American way... I probably won't support Cinestill again like this, but as far as 400D goes, I'll reserve judgement until I have shot the rolls I ordered back in March and still haven't received. My favorites from your video are the ones of Brandenburger Tor with the massive halations around the top.
That’s interesting, I will do some research how it behaves when shot at 1600. To be honest I did not pay that close attention to the campaigne after I received my film, so I did not even know about the delays. Sorry to hear you have been frustrated, it’s very understandable! I hope the film stock can make up for that once you can shoot it :)
Fun fact on film prices: In Japan I have to pay an average of €23 for either 50D and 800T per roll in 135. Will be a little bit cheaper in 120. Ordering 400D from the us made that about €25 per roll from the US and €40 per 220 roll if it is made. Still, easier and better to buy local 😊
Oh wow, that is crazy! Is it only Cinestill that is as expensive or are film prices generally more expensive in Japan? At least Fuji should be affordable, right…? 😬 Here in Germany I pay around 15€ for a roll of Cinestill so I hope 400D will be around that price here as well
@@KarinMajoka Fuji is indeed cheaper. From €8 for 24 exposure to €10 for the negative films. With positive film it’s more like €20 to €25 for 135 and 120, not sure for 4x5. Kodak is between €8 if you buy a pro 100 5 pack film and max €25 for Porta 800. If colour i usually go with Lomo films, as a 3 pack they are way cheaper. B/w is a bit cheaper, but also between €8 and €25. I think the reason for the high prices of Cinestill is that postage between Japan and US has risen dramatically thanx to 45 4 years or so ago. It was €5 cheaper before. Also, colour costs more, because we cannot develop it at home. It’s forbidden. B/W no problem, but colour Chemistry is not allowed to be sold. But well, I’m happy to support my local film shop in Yokohama. They are super nice. 😊
This video worked out great, thanks to all three of you for making it! I think it's cool that we have some different and interesting film options, but I agree with many others here that this film is not worth the price (for me). I'm very happy with Ultramax for street shooting. Übrigens: do you think speaking in English opens a different part of your personality that is not quite possible in German? I suspect so.
Thanks for your comment! Yes the price was rather steep, but I expect it to be cheaper once it’s available in stores in Europe, so that shipping and taxes do not come on top. Regarding your question about language: yes, absolutely! There are some phrases that cannot be translated in either language which also shapes how I think and express. And also: in Germany I feel so eloquent, sometimes in English I feel like my mouth cannot really translate what my brain is trying to say which can be a bit frustrating
It’s zone focusing. Every lens has a certain distance that will be in focus when you’re at each f stop aperture value. When you have a wider lens you can get more in focus as well. Karin was using a 15mm which means it would be really easy to get a lot in focus, while with a 50mm it’ll be very hard and anything above is just near-impossible. I use a 28mm and when I’m in f/8 I usually have ~1 - 3 meters in focus. I recommend researching zone focusing more if you’re into street photography! :)
Exactly as May explained I used zone focusing. So instead of focusing precisely with the rangefinder patch I try to estimate the distance from my subject and adjust the focusing tab to the right distance or zone by feel. It’s a bit harder than on the 15mm but also works pretty well on my 35mm. Let me know if you have any more questions about this technique! :)
Yes, indeed. I had another 15mm (or even 14mm) lens some while ago which was a pain to use because of that. But with the Voigtländer I did not have any issues at all luckily
stuff, Stuff, STuFf, stuFF, StUfF, StuFF, stUFF, STUFF, stUff, STUff...😝😝🤣🤣 Looks like a good film for street. I've been shooting a lot of Colour Plus lately, with a bit of Ektar and Gold thrown in for good measure. But, I'll have to try some 400 and see how it goes for me.
Hahaha great comment! 😂😂 I think it’s comparable to Kodak Gold regarding the warmth of the colours. I hope you get the chance to try it out yourself soon! :)
Fair enough, that‘s fine too :) I personally really like the characteristics this film gets from the modification but I absolutely understand why it‘s not everybody‘s cup of tea.
I talked to CineStill briefly and they told me that some labs do not seem to scan this film right. I did not do any post processing on these images, but when brining the temperature down a little bit, it would probably loom more true to life
Interesting! Thanks Karin & Elmar! For $25 per 36 exposures I personally would not "waste the frames" on rather quick blurry streetshots, but thats just my opinion. :) The film stock itself looks interesting it its colors/tonality.
If people are fighting or scrambling to get their hands on this film just stop! Do not over hype this film. It’s nothing really special, just another color film.

I also thought that it would probably work very well for portraits. Reflective surface like jewelery probably looks great with the halations!

it was 400d iso but you mentioned boxspeed 250? that part always confuses me haha.
25 euros per roll? shesh that steepp
Well, Cinestill brands it as an ISO 400 film. But the material is originally Kodak Vision 3 motion picture film with a "real" ISO of 250.
