As a lifelong Red Wings fan I am saddened to hear this. He was a great guy. My heart goes out to Phil and the rest of his family. I hope Goardie, Sid and Ted take it easy on him up there
"Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent . . . and Tony O." As a 16-year old kid I patterned my own goaltending style after Bernie and Tony. He will be missed. Rest well in the Heavenly Kingdom, Tony!
I was devastated hearing this. I was fortunate to watch Payton, Jordan, & Banks as a Chicagoan but Tony 0 was, is, & will always be my #GOAT Athlete/Player. Got his autograph when I was a young boy then I had a vintage CCM Blackhawks #35 jersey autographed by him in 2014. I wear it all the time in his honor. Class act & genuinely nice all around gentleman. #RIP Tony, My heart goes out to your family. Thanks for the memories.
The story goes that Mr. Esposito and his wife would have all the new players on the Black Hawks over to his home every year for dinner to help them in their transition to the team and Chicago-doesn't surprise me at all that's the kind of man he was-RIP Mr. Esposito
Rest in Peace TonyO. Truly one of the all time greats. I fell in love with hockey in the 1970's and Tony Esposito will always be one of those larger than life sports heroes.
I started watching the Hawks in the early 1960s, so Glenn Hall was my FIRST goalie to idolize, but Tony-0 was soon to overtake Glenn! Sorry, but I'll always remember the disappointment of the 1971 7th game of the SCFs! Waiting 49 years to see the Hawks win it ALL was a LONGGGGGGGG time to wait!
I'm an Italian from Boston watching Phil as a kid was great . But there was always a special place in my heart for Anthony . Raise your sticks heaven just received one of the greatest of all time RIP TONY O
Attended his hockey school two summers in a row in the mid 70’s He was always my idol and I wore his number proudly all the way to the OHL before a knee injury ended my career. I will never forget his guidance or his generosity. Thank you Tony!!!!
Almost every kid in my neck of the woods had a Tony Esposito goalie mask when we played ball hockey. The Espositos were a household name just like Gretzky was in the 1980's
When we played street hockey, I played goalie because I loved Tony O. My first Blackhawks game he shut out the hated Blues on his birthday at the Old Barn. RIP Tony. You were the best.
. served as backup to Vachon dressing for all 4 games in the finals. Tony's name was added to the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens. 68-69 season
I remember one regular season game he goaled against the Boston Bruins. It finished 0-0. The last minutes were frantic as you can imagine all those big scorers, including his brother, trying to win the game. His opponent was Gerry Cheevers. I couldn't believe it when the Canadiens let him go. Also, he was the third goalie during the Challenge Cup series between the NHL All-Stars and the USSR national team. Bowman who was the coach of the NHL had put Dryden in play for the first two games and Cheevers for the last which they famously lost 6-0. Again, I couldn't believe he wasn't considered #1 and I still think that, if he had, the NHL would have won the series
I am 55 from Buffalo and loved the late 70's early 80's hockey. Loved Tony and Phil plus Ken Dryden and the French connections and of course Don Cherry. Some great memories... I remember when.
It is difficult to see great players like Tony Esposito from that era leave this world. Deep sympathy to Phil Esposito and family. Sad beyond words. R I P.
I just happened to be reading Phil Esposito's biography 'Thunder and Lightning' now. He mentions his brother Tony several times, from when they were kids playing street hockey to playing together against the Soviets. Sad news indeed
Chicago had a great chance to win multiple cups if they hadn't have traded Phil and managed to keep Bobby Hull happy and not jump to the WHA, especially with Tony's goaltending and the solid defense they seemed to have in the early to mid 70's. shame really !
I was devasted to hear the news of Tony's passing. 😢 I watched him while growing up in the Chicago suburbs and got to meet him and Marilyn a few times. Great memories. RIP, Tony-O. You're loved and missed! ❤
As a kid growing in Toronto I was fortunate to watch Esposito play many times at MLG. He was electric between the pipes and the games when Chicago came to town were always sold out. Back then you could walk down to the rink during warmups and get an autograph. Thanks for creating this video!
I was playing street hockey and then ice hockey on the NW side of Chicago. I was always a goalie. Espo in the net was like a G-d to me. And Chicago Stadium was like a cathedral. The greatest venue hockey will ever have.
I am a lifelong L.A. Kings fan since 1968 but I always admired the incredible goal tending of Tony Esposito. When I think about how the goal tenders of recent decades use enough padding to fill up half of the net and then watch these highlights of Tony using minimal padding it makes his amazing saves all the more outstanding (this goes for all of the goalies from back in those days). My hero goalie was Rogie Vachon but Tony E. was fantastic. One of the best ever in net. RIP Tony Esposito. This is sad news indeed.
As a boy growing up in Philly in the late 60s and early 70s, I held a grudging admiration and respect for Tony O. Once Mylec started making actual street hockey equipment (we always made our own or used old baseball equipment), I was reminded of Tony on almost every street and driveway. Us stand-up goalies never could embrace the Butterfly style, but Tony used it as well if not better than any of the old-time goalies. He was the prototype for the modern goalies, who by now are exclusively using the Butterfly. You can't argue with Tony's success, and he was a great player, and we will miss him. The final horn has sounded for you, Tony. RIP.
Tony just looked the boss in that beautiful Blackhawk uniform, cool mask, always tempting you with that 5 hole. Remember him so well when I was a little kid in the early '70's.
I grew up a Ranger fan in NYC, but I had the utmost respect for Tony! So sorry to hear about his passing! My condolences go out to Phil and the rest of his family!

From a French old kid in Montreal... Tony O was one of our heroes in 72 against the Soviets, and an enemy with the Blackhawks for two finals in the early 70's. Funny thing is, we didn't have any problems in embracing him as one of ours, or hating him when the situation called for it. Why? Because he was so damned good, that's why. Merci Tony. Sleep well man...
I remember my first hockey stick was a Mylec Phil Esposito model. Then they came out with the goalie mask patterned after Tony. Every time I see one of these masks I think of him. RIP #35.
Awe! Tony ‘O’. I spent my childhood playing goalie in road hockey and Tony was my idol and I bled a lot of the time just to make that Tony ‘O’ save and shut out. That’s two of my favourites now skating the golden hockey rink in the sky.. Stan Makita, 21 Tony Esposito 35 🥰🇨🇦
Tony O was one of the best in the day (w Ken Dryden) when hockey seemed more real, a truly tough style of game when skills were also raising. He was great... but he wasn't the pioneer of the butterfly; that honor would go to Glenn Hall, HOFer of the '60 Hawks Cup winner. (History has a way of changing the facts!) Tony utilized it in the time hockey was getting national TV coverage, underscored in these highlights by listening to Dan Kelly's (StL Blues) play-by-play voice on national TV, but there are plenty of B/W photos of Hall - with no mask - would drop into the butterfly to span the posts during his Ironman record for goalies.
Tony’s style was years ahead of its time. I tried to copy it when I played goal as a kid, but all my coaches and parents discouraged it, telling me to stay up on my skates. Similar when I was a young goalie in the 70s. They coached stand up style but butterfly got me the position over the others. SO saddened to hear... greatest goalie of yesterday AND today. There are very few sports heroes who had skill ahead of the times. Imagine what kind of goalie Tony would have been today... He certainly wouldn't have been the smaller story behind brother Phil (maybe) Anyway, as born and raised in Buffalo I have always respected quality players regardless of what Jerseys they wore. Deep condolences to brother Phil (who I also respect)
My God do I love this game of Hockey 🏒, rest in piece Mr. Esposito. Your gonna be at heavens gate stopping the not worthy like you stopped all of those shots against you...May God bless this Netminder....

Having grown up in Chicago, Tony O was my boyhood hero. I got to meet him in the early 70s and he recognized me from my dad's season tickets, which were right where the Hawks came up the stairs at Chicago Stadium. I was there for Game 7 in 71 and Game 6 in 73 when the Hawks lost to the Habs, and I felt his pain (especially 71). In the middle part of his career, Tony played for some mediocre Hawk teams. I recall a 1-0 loss in the playoffs to the Islanders when the Hawks were outshot something like 50 to 20, and all he could say post game was, "I blew it." I have so many Tony O memories, too many to peck out on my phone. RIP Tony O. I'll always cherish the memories.
I just saw that he passed. I grew up watching Phil and the Bruins but always saw Tony as an awesome goaltender. Thoughts and prayers to the Esposito family.
I met Phil Esposito in the early 70's. He was a wonderful man as was his brother Tony. RIP Tony 🙏 from a fellow Ontario Canadian 🕊😇 You are in the Angel Hockey Hall of Fame now. Condolences to the Esposito family 🇨🇦
Growing up, I would watch "Showdown" during intermissions between period on Hockey Night in Canada. One on one player shoot outs with the best goalies against best players. Tony Esposito was one of the goalies. Great era to watch hockey on TV. R.I.P.
...whenever I played street hockey I was him. I played goalie because I didn't want to mess up my shot on the ice. I even got a right handed glove and learned to catch that way. I used to do the "butterfly" like he did! Love you Tony O!!!
Arguably the greatest brother combination in nhl history. 2 hall of farmers. Both players were arguably the best in NHL at their respective positions n the early 70s. Name a better brother combo ? the Richards, almost. The Hulls - not quite. Wasn’t a Blackhawk fan - but Tony was the best goaltender in the league for a period of time, bar none. RIP.
I knew Tony I did work for him at his St Pete Beach house for many years by far one of the nicest guys I ever met I would bring my dog to work I never saw my dog until I was finished the job Tony took my dog in the house and gave him treats and that's just how he was amazing man. 👍
I’m a fan of Goalies,Sad to hear we Lost one in my Dad’s day growing up he was a good one and My thoughts and Prayers go to the Esposito Family! Still glad to be a fan of the Sport they did Play!
My brother and I had an old table top hockey game, it had the metal flats for the players. The teams we had were the Original Six, I hand painted the numbers on the backs of the figures; on the Blackhawks goalie was number 35.
Grew up in Chicago late '60s '70s old stadium nothing like it Tony make a save everybody be screaming Tonio Tonio the whole building shook couldn't hear for 2 days the ears are plugged from the hockey game there's a great goalie one of the best rest in peace Tonio
One of the all time greats. His #35 retired like Phil's #7. Remember watching when Boston played Chicago on TV 38 in black and white and snowy. I was just a kid then. RIP Tony.
You might have to be old to appreciate what Tony Esposito did. He revolutionized the position. He came along in the "small pad era" for goaltenders and bucked the trend. Nearly every goaltender of that era and all of the great ones were stand-up goaltenders. They only went down to cover up or on a scrambling save. Tony O was the first to be successful using the butterfly style that every goaltender uses now. As Brad Park and others said, he presented a small target using his size, positioning and that butterfly style.
I was 10 when the two Espositos blossomed. They, along with Bobby Orr, were my idols. I might have been the only kid in the whole province of Quebec to cheer for them rather than for Montréal.
I was proudly among many a throng who lined the upper balcony at the old Chicago Stadium, cheering "Tony-Tony-Tony!!!! That would usually come after a stanza & flurry of action saves in front of the net. Then we'd ROAR, giving energy to "Stan the man" Mikita, Bobby Hull, J.P. Bordeleau, Cliff Koroll, Pit Martin, Darcy Rota, in later years - Dennis Savard, Troy Murray, Tom Lysiak and Al Secord all racing up ice for a barrage of action on the other end that would, a lot of times, end up with a goal and we'd raise the roof in the loudest cheers imaginable. That old stadium was an All-star cathedral of excitement back in those days. "Tony O" was at the center of it all. It didn't matter that we never actually won the cup, those men delivered entertainment, the likes of which have not been seen since, except for the 90's Bulls....MAYBE. Never got to see him up close, always from way in the upper balcony, (standing room only whenever Orr, Phil Espo, Gretzky, Lafleur, Bobby Clarke, Mike Bossy came to town) I owe the enthusiasm of my youth and my coming of age as a man to Mr "Tony O" Esposito and Chicago Stadium, true sports heroic icons.....
Rest in peace Tony. I remember having the Mylec Esposito goalie mask. Being from Boston and a huge Gerry Cheever’s fan , I put stitches all over it with black marker
A great allstar goalie , many times have I seen this great athlete on tv between the pipes wearing sweater number 35 for the chicago black hawks, brother of the great phil Esposito number 7 for boston,
Печально. Уходит эпоха великих. За ней новая. Земля вертится. Спи спокойно, Тонни. Я всегда болел против тебя, но восхищался твоей игрой, как и твои фаны.

Grew up in Chicago late '60s '70s old stadium nothing like it Tony make a save everybody be screaming Tonio Tonio the whole building shook couldn't hear for 2 days the ears are plugged from the hockey game there's a great goalie one of the best rest in peace Tonio
Phil and Tony are National treasures, from Philadelphia.
One of the greatest goalie in the ice hockey history.
Rest in peace.
One of the all time greats. His #35 retired like Phil's #7. Remember watching when Boston played Chicago on TV 38 in black and white and snowy. I was just a kid then. RIP Tony.
Here's to all the goals you saved! Thank you from this Blackhawks fan! 🏒😇35
I really enjoyed watching him during my childhood especially in the 70's. Every time I see his mask, it's Tony. RIP.
Just hearing this . He will always be one of my childhood heroes .R.I.P Mr. Esposito
RIP Tony. One of the best of all time.
R.I.P. Tony, and I am giving love to Phil and the rest of the family. THANK You for everything you have done for the game.
I was 10 when the two Espositos blossomed. They, along with Bobby Orr, were my idols. I might have been the only kid in the whole province of Quebec to cheer for them rather than for Montréal.
He was my childhood hockey hero.
Tony in the top 5 all time goalie...thank you tony for 1972.
Omg I’m so pissed R I P LEGEND THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE 😥😓😓
Tony Esposito was a great guy and a great goalie!
Very sad news to hear.. RIP Tony O"
RIP TONY O , peace and love to the family.
Remember tony in the 1972 summit series, great performance...will miss you man...
Tony-O is the greatest goalie in Hawks history. He played when goaltending was about making saves, not just positioning.
Tony was great! However, Glen Hall was better!

@@masonwright7700 Your 1 word response isn't even suited for a bumper sticker! They didn't call Glen Hall Mr. Goalie for nothing!
As a hab fan, you were never worried about the Blackhawks; you were worried about Esposito. Nothing but respect for Tony O.
May God Rest his Soul 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Rest in peace Tony. I remember having the Mylec Esposito goalie mask. Being from Boston and a huge Gerry Cheever’s fan , I put stitches all over it with black marker
A true class act RIP TonyO.

Thank you for the great memories
Tony O.
