    Thank you for your reply Adam. I'm just getting into this railfanning, and trying to learn as much as possible,and finding out there is a heck of a lot to learn.

    As a retired Engineer on Amtrak, crew use to go from Washington to Pittsburgh. The crew from Washington would layover in Pittsburgh for 24 hours. Because of the long hours there were two Engineer from Washington. Agreements are after 12 hours the crews are paid till they go back to work. Plus Amtrak pays for the rooms of the crew. It is much cheaper now where the crews layover are less the 12 hour, so no pay; it’s called ( held time) is not paid and the hotel bill is much less. So Amtrak changes crew to reduce these cost. I believe the second person ( young lady) getting off the train with Tony could have been a qualifying engineer or conductor. My guess on why the crews changed there is because Tony was running out of time under the hours of service law and the relieving engineer was there to take over to get the train to Pittsburgh. The next crew goes from Pittsburgh to Toledo, Ohio. The crew from Toledo lays over about 18 hours in Pittsburgh. Crew changes are also a product of system seniority and Zones, plus were that Engineer is qualified to operate. The last crew works from Toledo to Chicago and their lay over in Chicago is 8 hours. Then those crews work back to their starting crew base. Hope that clears up some of the questions. The was Amtrak 29 the Capitol Limited and the return trip is Amtrak 30.

      Anthony DePalma was the main man in this video. Who were the other two drivers?

      Not sure of the Engineers from Washington since that was not my Zone but I think I remember the Engineer that was relieving Tony that his first name was John. Not to sure since I only knew him for a short period of time before I retired. I would take the train from him from time to time in Pittsburgh. Since he worked the extra board I only saw him a few times, plus it’s been 4 years since I last worked

    I thought they change crews at Cumberland, MD and then again at Pittsburgh, PA. Didn´t know about a crew change stop at Connellsville, PA.

      I was wondering the same. Seems like a lot of crew changes and a huge waste of resources to pay for lodging so many crews.

    I always wonder if the timetable allows for those lenghty and socialized crew change procedures. In Europe, the single driver already waits for his train and instantly switch with the arriving driver.

    Does Amtrak run a dead man's switch. If there's only one operator, and that operator has a heart attack, which anyone can have at anytime. If there's only one operator does the train stop automatically.

    • @adamw1944
      @adamw1944 8 років тому +1

      +Gary Plastek Most European railways tody operate OMO (One Man Operation). The dead man pedal (or Sifa in Germany) is the most common system to secure and automatically stops the train.

      I watched a video about the Zephyr and the engineer had to press a button when he heard a buzzer. He had so many seconds to do it and if he didn't the train would do an emergency stop on its own.

    • @parkerjon29
      @parkerjon29 5 років тому +1

      @@MatthewSmith-cv7op This doesn't make any sense. I can see engine crews changing at Cumberland and PIT, but why would East and westbounds be different. Seems like a huge waste of Amtrak's money to be shuttling crews to different places or lodging them after driving for like 2 hours
