Puccini had toyed with setting Victorien Sardou's 'hit' play La Tosca (written for the great actress Sarah Bernhardt) from the early 1890s, but only began serious work following the premiere of La bohème in 1896. He employed Bohème's gifted librettists Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica to streamline Sardou's complicated plot and give depth to his rather stereotypical characters. The opera's premiere at Rome's Teatro Costanzi on 14 January 1900 was indifferently received by the critics, many of whom disliked Tosca's violence. However, the public loved it and it has remained hugely popular.
Puccini portrays the idealism of Tosca and her lover Cavaradossi through radiant, expansive music, including Act I's duet 'Qual occhio al mondo', Cavaradossi's ardent aria 'Recondita armonia' and Tosca's despairing Act II prayer 'Vissi d'arte'. Scarpia's music, by contrast, is dark and terrifying - from the demonic chords that open the opera to the violence of his Act II exchanges with Tosca. Jonathan Kent's production, with Paul Brown's stunning designs, perfectly evokes the troubled atmosphere of Rome in 1800 and Tosca's combination of sensuality and religious sincerity. - Розваги

artistically sung, with excellent use of dynamics, from Piano to Forte, all with his dramatic masculine sound, I heard him first about 15 years ago in Grant Park Chicago, then later in opera there and thought back then that he was excellent, still enjoyed hearing him. They just Brdcst. this complete performance on radio.
Meraviglioso, come lui nessuno, l'aria sognante all'inizio e la disperazione alla fine.
Thank you for sharing
BRAVISSIOM ❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
I'm very glad this came up on YT recommendation as this is one of my favorite tenor
arias. I must say this performance of Jonas would be considered as good as any of
the great tenors of the past.
A masterful performance!
Great singing! Bravo!
Wonderful voice and personality
Ein "Klassiker", der nicht zu toppen ist! Danke - ich höre ihn immer wieder!

Incredible singing! More than usual, and the acting is... it is as if he is actually a man, knowing that his life is coming to an end, who has never wanted to live more! Excellent Bravo!

Jonas Kaufmann 's "E lucevan le stelle" is as good as Pavarotti's. Jonas can sing every thing greatly.
Well it's a totally different type of voice from the Lyric voice of Pavarotti, but I understand what you mean as far as sung artistically very well here.
His version always makes me cry
He had some vocal problems in his middle voice, that was mid way in his career but he has sounded much better of late, I always Enjoyed his intelligent singing as here.
I would like to see Jonas play the Phantom in POTO. He reminds me a lot of Peter Hofmann
🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝
C EST SI BEAU
The larynx is very thick.. Too throaty and 'lungy' for this delicate piece./ He is quite good - but not comparable to others like Pav.
I'm crying.
Kaufman has been struggling with a peculiar middle register for most of his career. However, I find him to be a sincere artist who is always attempting to give us a good performance. Perhaps his sincerity and artistry outweigh his short comings for many of us.

Avaros.

He’s good but he’s not my type of voice.
The performance itself was horrible. The way Mr. Kaufmann sings is roaring and then whispering like he was out of breath. This aria is about the emotion of a prisoner, who will soon be executed, thinking about his lover. Great singers can bend their voices and release the warmth, no matter how big they sing, not yelling like talking to the enemies and then drastically reducing the volume. It's not musicality, it's not acting with voice, it's the lack of proper technique.
The comment itself is horrible, and completely inaccurate and unobservant, the writer appears to be deaf and lacking in any technique at all.
@@jennypratt5345 The reply itself is dumb and merely false statement. The replier seems to be a crazy fan girl who think she knows everything and is willing to call anybody who disagree with her deaf.
Crazy - no. Fan girl - no. Good hearing - certainly.
You are clearly not only deaf, but entirely ignorant. Not unusual, but very tedious.
@@jennypratt5345 No fact, no comparison, no technical knowledge, no other supportive detail, just claims and insults to those who disagree. ==> crazy fan girl.
@@duy-anhnguyen5890 - no facts, no comparison, no technical knowledge, no supportive detail, no ears.
Far from being an insult, I'm giving you a good excuse for your stupid comment. Instead of simply putting it down to sheer spite and malice, which I suspect may be the real reason.
You don't have to listen to what you don't like, or are too ignorant to understand.
