    You're a really good storyteller. People don't realize what flat ground is all about til they listen to someone recap like this. It's art.

    I had a major fall last year and will now be wearing wristguards all the time(6 months of recovery after surgery). The more I try to sort out knee and hip pain the more I realize the importance of stretching the hips and large muscles that support the knees and hips. Riding switch is a great suggestion and can extend your session length. I'm really grateful for finding skating again in my 40s and am hoping to keep it going for as long as possible. It will never look great, but it is my geriatric zen journey:)
    Rest and listening to your body are two key lessons as we age.
    Keep up the great posts and enjoy the smell of concrete (if you have real winters you will know what I'm talking about).

    Another great video! I love how you're emphasizing how to listen to your body and skating switch is such a great idea! Such a coincidence that I just sprained my knee (didnt warm up or stretch properly before the sesh) and you uploaded this video an hour after, the timing is hilarious!
    I was curious, have you changed up your gym routine for the stretches you do/workouts/reps to build more strength to skate? (sorry if you've already answered this in another video and I missed it!)

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  7 місяців тому +1

      ah! Sorry to hear that--especially what crazy timing. Hope it heals up quickly though. My knee is still out of commission for the most part.
      I have! And the more I learn, the more I change up my routine. It's not too structured at the moment, as I put more effort into skating. But, I try to strengthen and improve flexibility in my core down and focus on lower body muscle groups. But as I get injured I learn of new muscle groups to pay attention too haha
      I started everything pretty much with body weight and worked up.

    I wake up with stiff knees but they just warm up after a bit. I use a firm mattress, my legs hate it but it frees me from back issues.
    Sometimes I lose the board and have to pivot on my feet to save my knees from taking the momentum.

    I skate inline and got into aggressive skating and holy shit, my knees were not ready for jumps, and I'm in decent shape and had already been going to the gym. Turns out the best way for me was to just work on my technique and get my knees/ligaments used to it. (And taking adequate breaks when my knees weren't feeling the best)

    I have been wearing the Old bones knee sleeve when skating longer sessions, it seems to help out.

    The same issue, my right knee begins to hurt after 20-30 min session, even with a warm-up. It hurts for a day or two. I do climbing, running but there is no such issues with my knees. Anyway I have solved this problem - I've installed riser pads (the soft ones) and bought orthotic insoles, so now I've forgotten about any pain in my knees (I think skate insoles'd be more efficient, but at the time I can't afford it). Working on switch also helps. Thank you for advices!

    Great video. At 46 my knees have been bothering me a bit over the last few months. I agree that stretching and strengthening are very important. Varying your tricks is also really helpful including switch. You might even find something new that you really like. Since trying switch grinds, I discovered that I love switch crook on my little garage grind box now. It was never something on my radar until I was determined to try some new switch things.

    I'm on a fitness journey for the same reason as you. I had my worst slam 2 days ago (landed on my mid-back and then my head bounced off the asphalt). My head didn't feel a thing since I wear a helmet (except the pulled neck muscle from whiplash), but I'll be on painkillers for a while for my back. Nothing is broken but being 36 i expect at least a couple months to recover fully. This has reinforced my will for a consistent strength training regime (stronger muscles/ligaments/bones help reduce acute injury damage, not just the repetitive stress kind).

      @SarahParkMatott  7 місяців тому +1

    Stretching is key but also make sure your drinking enough water at least a gallon or more each day plus healthier foods some foods can cause certain types of inflammation in our joints you use your knees alot as a skater so your going to see most of the swelling, pain and just general uncomfortability from the knees and possibly your ankles and lower back look into glucosamine pills for knee health try eating more bone broth that seems to be good for the bones too
    This is a sad fact but no matter how much fun we have on our boards landing tricks still takes a huge toll on our bodies inside & out take care of yourself mentally just as much as your physical health it's not bad too take a break from the board to let your body heal I take days off from skating I skate maybe 3-4 days a week the rest is spent working out & resting on Sundays

I might still be able to accomplish this years goals but nothing is certain at the moment. This past year has been a lot. Here’s to an uneventful remainder of the year.

    @SarahParkMatott started skating at 44 yo. I can't shake away the fear of falling. Even wearing pads and helmet still makes me nervous to skate fearing a broken leg or arm and missing work for so long. How can i ever get over this fear?

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  7 місяців тому

      I found the best way to fight fear is to focus on building skill and confidence. It might take longer than peers who don't share similar fears, but it's all about time. I was so afraid of so many things, but as the months go by and I get on my board again and again, it really does get better. Focus on areas you feel more comfortable--which might be riding or ramps etc (whatever it is for you!) Build up skill and confidence there, and it will start to translate to other areas over time as you build more skill and more confidence. At least, that has been my experience 😃

    Gym goers usually dedicate entire training sessions to one specific part of the body, like "leg day" for example. So why not just pick a specific day of the week to skate only switch?
    You could call it switch day

    The good old knees. As a teenager you were always jumping down somewhere and hurting yourself. After the first knee operation you are happy about every hard landing you miss. But at some point it tickles you again. Somehow I can't do it without the adrenaline. But I am happy and grateful for every tip or training session to stabilize my knees. Thanks for your great work.

    whaa, my body/joints are soooo screwed up from skating without stretching/warming up... hat two knee surgeries (ligaments and miniskus), my wrist joints are permamently damaged, just like my elbows are and one of my collar bones either broke a little and healed badly or it is just fckd up in general... dunno, but it hurts, when under stress.
    oooh and of course I developed arthritis on both of my hip joints.... which wakes me up every hour at night...
    nontheless, I want to get back into skating as soon as the weather get's a bit warmer =) haven't skated for 5+ years, now.
    if I can give you a quick advice, when you try a nollie, push your feet a tiny, tiny bit towards the direction you are rolling, like RIGHT after the pop (but don't lift them up entirely off the board), this should hopefully help =)
    I have some few skateboarding clips on my channel, too in an extra playlist, if you are ever bored =P
    also, I have to say you have a good style: )

      Despite how rough skating can be on our bodies, awesome you want to get back into skating! Hope you have fun with it. And thanks! My brain understands to pop forward, but my foot just isn't cooperating yet. I used to get a ton of ghost pop on my fakie ollies for the same exact reason, but I'm pretty good at those now. Hopefully nollie and switch don't take as long as regular and fakie did haha 💪 let's hope for some nice weather sooner rather than later!
