I wonder how that compares to the EMG standard preamp on the Combustion as opposed to the NG? I've been thinking about moving to the Glockenklang though, the preamp that comes as standard on the Canadian models but great vid... as always!

@@LowEndLobster a Classic Booster 4. Seems to be one of the less popular models, but after hearing a few sound clips I was impressed. Originally wanted a California II VM 4 for that Stingray type pick up but it just didn't sound as good to my ears.

Ps going to Orlando in the am to pick up a 2020 jet black 5H stingray and I'm finally going to be able to try a NG3 out may get one next if I like it, yours is the baddest tho!! That stingray and jazz and P is so much options i love it !!! Perfect video my man!!
Thank you! Yeah man, the east really made this bass a lot more neutral and flexible. I really need to do an in depth video on this setup cause there's so much to unpack!
Great mod! Will be awesome to hear that 'stingray mode' compared to actual Stingray. How is fanned fingerboard playability compared to traditional one?
Thanks Dmitry! We'll absolutely do a more in depth video on the tones of this bass with comparisons to their traditional counterparts. Playability took a little getting used to, the fan here (37"-34") is much more drastic on this bass vs the Ibanez EHB (35"-33"), but you only really notice in the higher registers. It's very comfortable down low and not noticeable in the middle
This sounds great! I love the addition on the tone pot on the NG as well! I'm actually really interested in trying a mod like this, where did you find the 6 way selector?
Thanks Joe! I got the selector switch from Jason at Fret Nation. I'm not sure if there's a specific link for it yet, but If you ask him for the switch that Lobster got, I'm sure he'll oblige :)
@@LowEndLobster After trying to find the info on the internet, and thanks for your reply, I noticed at the bottom of the instruction sheet. Gah! Right there it is. Ordered a custom rotary - N, M, NB (s), MB (p), MB (s), D-ROC (s/p). I never use the bridge only on my 4 way.
Sounds more like a bongo because of the eq for some reason But if we think about it, the bridge pickup always sounds (despite the preamp) like a mix between a Stingray and a Warwick Thumb
Too bad you're not in Europe, I would like you to enjoy the versatility of my Ibanez SRMS805 with Bartolini humbucker pickups where each pickup has a dedicated 3band VariMid EMG preamp, active blend control and a switch which switch the control entirely allowing you to blend between inner and outer coils of the pickups, with outer and inner coils having their individual 3band vari-mid preamps.
@@FlameWizzard indeed. With the only difference that in my case the coils are always in parallel, and there is an option to switch between blending neck/bridge and inner/outer.
Great question! This is the second Dingwall that I've played, both NG series (actually third cause I played one in a store once). Would love to check out other models, and we'll be doing just that soon ;)
I think the Z models have a less chunky neck and a thinner body profile. the Sklar is dearer than the normal Z model. The pricing for the Canadian models in general are pretty reasonable. Not the waiting list though.
Thanks! Yeah I was really hoping I could setup the bypass by myself, but it proved to be a bit more challenging. Happy with the result here though. I emailed John East about a custom MMSR with the bypass switch but didn't hear back :(
@@LowEndLobster While I'm no expert I'm pretty confident you could make a bypass switch work. From the pickup selector and passive tone, wire the hot to lug 3 of a 2PDT switch, bridge lugs 1 and 2 (passive path), lug 5 goes to the input of the preamp, its output to lug 6 and finally lug 4 to the output jack.
Amazing mod, you can't beat greater versatility! Was switching from 4 way to 6 way selector a super involved process? I'd love to do this when I (eventually) get a dingwall but I'm not clued up at all on electronics
Thank you Cameron! It was somewhat involved as the stock 4 way switches utilize 'screw down' connectors, where the 6 way required some soldering (but came with a diagram). Overall it wasn't the hardest thing in the world but it definitely takes some soldering know-how
Always thought the 4 way selector to be way too limiting. I personally would have used the 6 way to include a strat 5 positions + bridge/neck. Love the stingray mode and DRoc though.
Super awesome SwissArmy bass. I have a question, does the kill switch cut the battery circuit? ...because that would be amazing, eliminating the necessity of pulling the plug every time you put it down, as to save batteries? I don’t even know if that’s a thing, or even if it’s possible or if I’m the only person that would want something like that? All I know is 9v batteries don’t grow on trees, if they did we’d probably make basses out of 9v battery trees. Thank you for sharing Cheers
Hi Low-end, I absolutely love this mod you did, I have a combustion 3 pick-up I'd kill to do this mod to. Would you be willing to list what exactly you bought from John East, where you got the appropriate 6 way rotary switch, and most important how you wired everything (a diagram) Thank you so much in advance. (-:
Thank you! I have an in depth video on this bass coming soon and will link a little diagram I made. The preamp is the John East MMSR 3 band stingray preamp, and there's an East/ACG tone control add-on that can be installed (I have one installed here). The rotary is from fret nation, I think it's linked in the description - but I'll have all that info in the upcoming video. So glad you dig this mod!
Isn't it the other way around stock? I thought there is a setting with bridge + middle in parallel, but not in series on the stock 4-way rotary switch on the NG3.
Great question! I had the mid freq range set to the 100-1k vs 200-2k that I changed it to after this video, was probably boosting in the 800-1k range there is my guess. Really nice grit at that point!
Sounds great. Was not sure about these to start with but loving them now. So much i am considering getting a 4 string . a lot for money for a Chinese bass but. tempting. If i do i may ask for assistance installing a 6 way switch. I am not the best at wiring. Do standard Long gauge string fit on this or would the E string be too short ? Great job again

I wonder how that compares to the EMG standard preamp on the Combustion as opposed to the NG? I've been thinking about moving to the Glockenklang though, the preamp that comes as standard on the Canadian models but great vid... as always!
Sound so much more organic!
Thank you! I agree
@@LowEndLobster I always found Dingwall, also with all the metal processing, to sound digital almost. Now I'm a full on metalhead but still like an organic tone. Good job!
Few comments
When a cat is near the bass I like the thought that you're stating it's body material
Cats on lobster always go to smaller side of the review table
-They love lobster?!
-Cats are liquid confirmed?!
LOL Cats are indeed liquid
Sounds great!
Thank you Anak!
Awesome mod! I might be in the minority, but I don't like the sound of Darkglass preamps (but I tend to favor more vintage-y sounding basses over modern basses anyways). That John East pre is great!
Thanks Patrick!
Same. DG is very over done nowadays. Has its place but…
This bass got swag 😎
Thanks Dahnger!
Really like what you did.
This is so good! You can sell all your other basses now.
Ps are you ever going to review a Sandberg? I just got one and it's the shiz.
Thanks AP! Yes, we'll definitely check some out. What'd you get!?
@@LowEndLobster a Classic Booster 4. Seems to be one of the less popular models, but after hearing a few sound clips I was impressed. Originally wanted a California II VM 4 for that Stingray type pick up but it just didn't sound as good to my ears.
My god!! That is perfect!! I would love to have a dingwall setup like that!! The 6 way rotary and a dingwall look with a stingray tone! Would u be willing to do that mod for anyone? Ps going to Orlando in the am to pick up a 2020 jet black 5H stingray and I'm finally going to be able to try a NG3 out may get one next if I like it, yours is the baddest tho!! That stingray and jazz and P is so much options i love it !!! Perfect video my man!!
Thanks Jeremy! Let's chat on the discord ;P
After listening to the original video on this it sounds much better now...
Ha! I knew it! I knew that the explosion sound effect was fake the moment your cat didn’t flinch.
Ahahahah this made my morning
It's extra funny because of the two cats, Bebe is the most afraid of everything, especially loud noises.
@@LowEndLobster awesome, thank you!
I can't find anywhere describing how to add the passive tone. After being backordered for a long time, I finally obtained one.
You connect it to the pos and neg of the preamp inputs in parallel with the pickups
🦞, that is bass witchcraft. It sounds so good.
Thank you!
Sounds more like a bongo because of the eq for some reason
But if we think about it, the bridge pickup always sounds (despite the preamp) like a mix between a Stingray and a Warwick Thumb
Thanks Steffo! You gave me a great idea for a comparison video ;)
Woah, please join our discord and share pics. I neeeeed to see this
reminds me of the quadruplebucker pickup :-D crazy crazy options ua-cam.com/video/aQEira_p6gU/v-deo.html
@@FlameWizzard indeed. With the only difference that in my case the coils are always in parallel, and there is an option to switch between blending neck/bridge and inner/outer.
That's crazy!
Any idea how this compares with Lee Sklar's signature Dingwall?
Great question! This is the second Dingwall that I've played, both NG series (actually third cause I played one in a store once). Would love to check out other models, and we'll be doing just that soon ;)
I think the Z models have a less chunky neck and a thinner body profile. the Sklar is dearer than the normal Z model. The pricing for the Canadian models in general are pretty reasonable. Not the waiting list though.
Great sounding bass. My only gripe is I wouldn't gig a bass that doesn't have a passive mode as failsafe.
Overall it wasn't the hardest thing in the world but it definitely takes some soldering know-how
@@LowEndLobster Thanks dude! Sounds like it could be a good learning experience
Always thought the 4 way selector to be way too limiting. I personally would have used the 6 way to include a strat 5 positions + bridge/neck. Love the stingray mode and DRoc though.
Thanks Flipper!
Dingwall should offer this configuration as an option.
Thanks Matthew! That'd be sweet, maybe I'll get a signature ;P lol
Thanks Tommy and YES! The kill switch severs the battery loop, so you can keep your bass plugged in without draining the battery
@@LowEndLobster OMFLOG!!!! That is awesome!!!! I way need to do that!Any diagrams or videos you can advise would be most helpful. You are awesome
Very cool!
Thank you Sheldon! I looooooooooooooooove my NG3. I have a bad habit of not leaving bass electronics alone ;P.
@@LowEndLobster I like the mods you did. John's such a great guy. I've really got to bring in some of his pre's.
John’s a gentleman!
@@LowEndLobster Thank you very much for your reply. I'll be sure to keep watching for that in depth video. Great job!!
Isn't it the other way around stock? I thought there is a setting with bridge + middle in parallel, but not in series on the stock 4-way rotary switch on the NG3.
Another winner...
At around 7mins can you recall what frequency that mid knob is sitting at?
Great question! I had the mid freq range set to the 100-1k vs 200-2k that I changed it to after this video, was probably boosting in the 800-1k range there is my guess. Really nice grit at that point!
Sounds great. Was not sure about these to start with but loving them now. So much i am considering getting a 4 string . a lot for money for a Chinese bass but. tempting. If i do i may ask for assistance installing a 6 way switch. I am not the best at wiring. Do standard Long gauge string fit on this or would the E string be too short ? Great job again
Hey Lobster. I'm a bit of a tone junky. Those mids sounded golden. Any comment on any likeness to a Wal? (he waits with bated breath haha)
Def not a Wal sound. We're going to be doing some Wal-ish (not a real one) content soon though!
@@LowEndLobster How excited should I be? And more to the point , should I be holding off ordering my next bass until then?
We're just gonna be looking at a couple wal/alembic style preamps with some Multicoil pickups. Gonna try and get a Wal like tone hopefully! I think we're gonna use the Ray4hh as a platform
@@LowEndLobster Cant wait! Multi coil tastic! I really enjoy your videos. My wallet does not however. Any thoughts / experience of a G&L L2000 with something like a Lusithand filter pre amp?
Lobster that Nolly Dingwall NG3 is Even better than a Stock 1 Bravo Well Done Lobster That B String is Thick Rich and Buttery Yikes I'm Sold 🙂👍♥️🙏🏽
Thanks Darrell!
I love mid sweep vs hi mid/lo mid option...
Thanks Kirt! I agree, toooons of flexibility and you have dip switches on the PCB to adjust the frequencies of the mid control as well.
@@LowEndLobster I need "the one pedal" for travel, something with OD, Comp, and *this* kind of EQ. Then add Aux in for play-along and headphone out with all the other usual connections.... I wish I could build it myself... around this preamp...
Hey man, does yours make a clipping noise when switching positions? Also, if you play a note and switch positions, does it make an EVEN louder sound? Trying to figure if my installation is wrong as I'm on the second switch and both clip. (the latter clips less).
This is driving me nuts :(
