Hey everyone! Today we're unboxing and taking a quick look at two basses from Tagima's import line. Tagima is a Brazilian brand known for making high quality instruments out of Brazil, but their import line out of China is looking to undercut the likes of Squier and Ibanez. Can these Chinese made instruments compete? Let's find out.
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(130) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com
Big thanks to Dom @ ThirdFloorGuitars for setting up my instruments. You can find him at www.thirdfloorguitars.com

-I search for said random bass on UA-cam
-Lobster somehow already has a video on it 😂

Wow, as a brazilian, never expected to see you playing Tagimas. My first bass ever was a made in Brazil Tagima and still playing decent almost 20 years later. Those are sold pretty cheap and found everywhere here in Brazil for about a third of a Squier price (Squiers get pretty darn expensive 'round here) and people will mod them to death. SX and Tagima are the most common bases for mods right here. I'm curious to see the review, as most of their youtube reviews were paid.

Pretty accurate, that's it. For the price they're the best buy around here since Squiers end up pretty more expensive than they should be

Thanks John and Marcus! IMO cheap instruments like that can often get a bad wrap due to poor storage conditions. The Gibson LP Jr. Tribute was notorious for this as they were all stored in a super dry warehouse and many had some bad fret poke out of the box due to some board shrink. This can often lead to two people getting the same instrument and having completely different experiences. I'll be checking out both eventually though :).

I have a tw66, i love it. Was my second bass, and the first one was a headache (an active stingray copy from Parquer, awful instrument, ate a battery per week).
When i purchased my Fender, i modded it with Gotoh tuners, Wilkinson brass saddles bridge and i first installed a Seymour Duncan quarter pounder but didn't like it, so i sold that and bought a locally made pickup to the Fender custom shop 62 spec, and put a set of Jameson original 54 Labella flats (A friend brought them from the US because local music stores do not have them). Took the paint out too, finished it in teak oil.
I am surprised with the problems that you had with the tw65, i've tried and setup a lot of this ones and never had a problem. Here we don't have Harley Benton, or Glarry, or the budget lines that are known to be good, and Squiers have become costly, so Tagima and SX are great options for beginners; a new Tagima costs almost half what a Squier affinity does. (Argentina)

Tagima made its name here in Brazil with its original, Made in Brazil models. They're really cheap and have decent quality. These new export lines made in China aren't that good, there's a lot of improvement needed there. Speaking of China-made Tagimas, they even released a StingRay Music Man clone with active circuitry, the 4 or 5-string Tagima TBM. Worth a look, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price LOL. I have a 5-string TBM and I can say they do their job as entry points to the world of Music Man tones, but certainly will never replace a StingRay. Cheers.

Well, that 66 looks nice anyways. 😊
As far as cheap basses go, and I've had quite a few, I would go with a Harley Benton. I only have one HB, the Ash bodied Jazz with the 70's pickup spacing. I bought it to be my poor man's Marcus Miller bass, and I'll be damned if it's not one of my favorite basses. It even had a surprise Flame Maple neck. It's not a huge sample size to judge the brand by, but it's quite a bit nicer than any Glarry's, SX's or even Squires that I've owned. I'd put it up there with my MIM Fender, if it wasn't as heavy as a medium sized celestial body.

By the way, if you're really into Brazil stuff and is ok venturing into the weird and trashy side of things, I recommend you to get a vintage Tonante bass. That brand was mostly active during the 60's and 70's, and boy, they're the most terrible basses you'll ever play. They didn't have an adjustable truss rod, so you probably won't find one in decent conditions today. If you're curious about that brand, search for 'tonante finder bass' (yeah, they named one of their models as "Finder", making joke of themselves by satirizing the Fender name) LOL if you like weird and low-quality you won't regret It.

@@LowEndLobster I knew someone was gonna ask so I just got it out of the way. Please do another HLK before a Glarry or even Slick would probably be more interesting.
Or. Dunable? just kidding of course someone isn't just going to up and buy a dunable for a YT channel

4:23 it still sounds better than the HLK before it got worked over proper. If the neck is twisted, that's a different story than simply having to set the action and relief up. People should learn how to dress their own frets anyhow. ;-P If you're buying a

6:43 There are actually a couple luthiers trying to break out of PRC but I shouldn't have to say what their challenges are. I know there's at least one custom shop that gets work done *somewhere* particular. I really need to start up a google doc or something for this. I've dug up so much crap I can't even begin to hold it in my head at once anymore.

8:23 In all honesty, imports from the PRC still seem pretty random on the QC to me and today isn't any different. Until I can really trace back to factories and people running them, it's basically them doing the QC or me and I don't think that ends up being a fair representation of anything except maybe the piece parts evaluated on their own. Even then, who knows what makes it on or off the line on any given manufacturing day? There's no sensible reason in These Modern Times that we shouldn't be able to put a face to the instruments, or at least the factory's face.
If I was going to start looking in places like that I'd check maybe Thailand and Taiwan, Russia is also great place to start looking for luthiers - I have a 7 string acoustic guitar made by a company called Doff and if you think your stuff needed setup lol this thing is barely playable and it was $400 and 14 weeks to get it out of St Petersburg ha ha ha
There is also a manufacturer in Nepal I saw a while back that was pretty cool but I don't know if they make basses. sahanaguitars.com/ It was pretty interesting and the guitar demos were great. Quality was off the charts. Basically a Kiesel type deal - handcrafted guitars for about 1.5k USD...you could probably order and sell Kiesels all day long after demoing them, unless Kiesel had some issue with it.
Demoing instruments seems to work pretty well for people selling them, so maybe I can feed my GAS if I have a pool of rotating stock that keeps going out as more comes in. I play more than bass. In fact, I'm still not that great of a bass player, I just like playing a whole lot of instruments lol it's fun

Really interesting that you say that, and I agree that there should be more transparency in regards to where these instruments come from. I'm VERY curious about the MIC MTD basses, where they're made, and how they are. We haven't had a great track record with MIC instruments outside of the Squier Paranormal.

You think those are bad? I have a "Memphis by Tagima" Jazz bass. That is, their second line of instruments or subdivision or what have you. Let me tell you, that thing is foul.
From the fretboard to the bridge and the electronics, nothing's good at all in that instrument.

Actually the TW66 after a nice setup was fine. The 65 does have some pokey frets though and is not as nice of an instrument IMO.
