I like how coach calls for another tailback right away. There's always another guy waiting for his opportunity. That's what O'Hara didn't appreciate, he had a sense of entitlement based on his talent and high school press clippings.
Put your finger in a cup of water and pull it back out and see how quick that hole fills back up. There's always someone who wants your spot if you don't
"If you had a TENTH of the heart of Ruettigers you could have made All American." I love how the coach comes to Rudy's defense here. Rudy was a "walk on" and knew that his chances of making the active list were next to nothing, but he still showed more drive and heart than just about any of the other tryouts. He was five foot nothing, 100 and nothing, and he took the hardest blows his peers could throw at him and kept coming back for more. And when he didn't make the active list, even though it took a good motivational talk from Fortune, he still showed up for practice in the end. True heart and commitment.
+Chris Gutierrez To have heart means you have the inner desire to be the best you can possibly be. I have known lots of people who had talent, but no heart. Larry Bird is an example of a guy who didn't have a lot of natural athleticism, but had the heart to work his butt off. I would put Michael Jordon in a different kind of class. He had lots of natural ability, and still worked extremely hard to be the best he could be. The lessons of this scene are for life no matter what we do. Work Hard. Keep plugging away, and you just might succeed at something.
One of my favourite characters in the film is Roland Steele. He is supportive of Rudy from day one, he calls him to the front of the line to run onto the field for the game, and even in this scene, immediately when the scuffle starts, he runs over to try to break it up. He's a true captain!
haha i used to loved steele as a kid. i actually don't think he was trying to break it up here though. mateus went to break it up, and steele told him to stay out of it. he wanted to see what rudy and o'hare were made of.
What I find so powerful about this scene is after Parsegian yells at O'Hara and tells him that has defined his entire career...the look on O'Hara's face and the camera panning to Rudy's teammates. Without saying one word, you knew that the teammates felt Parsegian was right, they lost respect for O'Hara and they gained more respect for Rudy. Without saying one word you could gather all of that. Amazing.
I love the accuracy of this scene because even though Rudy is such a huge underdog, if you work as hard as he does, at some point you’re gonna start making plays and you’re def gonna start to piss off some other players doing it. Love how the defense was pumped up for him when he gets back to the huddle
Kerry Yeah I was just watching it again, for about the 50th time since 1993, tonight and said to myself “Is that a much younger & “skinner” Vince Vaughn? Nah, it can’t be!”. Sure enuff it says at the end of the film: O’hare: Vincent Vaughn. Makes sense though. He’s from Chicago & would’ve just been starting out then.
Actually, he was getting ready to pass the ball. He was watching that Rudy guy the whole time and waiting for him to snap the ball. When he didn't he through it at him. That's when the fireworks hit the roof top.
One aspect they didn't show in the film: Rudy was in the U.S. Navy for two years after H.S. before returning to work in the steel mill and then going on to Holy Cross before getting his chance to attend Notre Dame. He was in his late-20's in his big game.
That kick at the end means something I think. I like to believe that the coach is pissed that he got someone like Rudy, with all his heart, but with a very un athletic body and musculature. He’s frustrated that he got a player with the heart, yet without the ability. If Rudy would’ve been bigger, he could have been amazing.
Both ways, he's pissed a golden boy like O'Hara wasted his 4 years and had to act like he did in his final practice...just frustrations boiling up, and Coach did it in front of the entire team (and senior class, O'Hara's class) - completely leveling his ego, and his teammates heard all of it, and they knew it was true. Rudy only got 2 years, and had literally about 1% chance of making a gameday listing...by the end, he got that 1 game, he earned it, O'Hara could've earned a starting job, but he never earned a damn thing...just a waste of talent. No bigger sin in the world than wasted talent.
"You just summed up yoir whole career in one sentence" And this scene just summed up the whole movie. Rudy gave it 110% on every play, every chance he got, while the other player, that he sacked, takes all his gifts and opportunities for granted.
@Carlos Montes not true at all you give me the hardest working midget in the world and have them play one on one vs shaq…. Hard work is everything but you still need talent
@Carlos Montes I’m not saying hard work doesn’t pay off man. Hard work is everything! All I’m saying is that you still need the talent in the first place. I’m a college baseball coach I see it all the time. You want to keep the kid that hustles all the time and literally gives everything he has to the sport you want to keep him but you can’t because the other kid is 6-6 and has the potential of hitting a homerun every at bat. You see what I mean hard work is very important but talent is everything
Rudy was just happy to be there; these were his "pro" moments. That's why he worked hard at every practice, living his dreams. Because once it's over, they're gone. Only a faint but wonderful memory.
Joe Marinaro tackle for loss, also commonly known as a sack is a tackle resulting in a down in the backfield. It does not matter if it’s a quarterback or running back.
@@melvinplaysgaming4030 - no. That's not what a sack is. Arguably the best and most motivational sports movie of all time. No one believed in Rudy, not even his own family, but he wanted bad enough and was self-determined and mentally tough enough to prove everyone wrong and achieve his long-time beloved dream. 🏈🏈

That's Vince Vaughn? LOL He got drilled by Rudy. He's no star athlete. The guy's just lanky. He's out of shape and non athletic. The actor playing Rudy is more athletic than Vince Vaughn I bet.
Vince Vaughn in my opinion was more athletic in Lost World Jurassic Park, after all just getting hit by a guy stronger than him was nothing compared 2 having 2 hang onto something for dear life in a half dangling RV above a presumable 12 story cliffside just because he and Sarah Harding kidnapped a baby T-Rex (wit a broken leg), lol !!!!!

Good thing was he redeemed himself at the end of the Georgia Tech game, and got Rudy to play...he learned how to be a good teammate in the end and I was glad to see the moment in the film.

That's Vince Vaughn? LOL He got drilled by Rudy. He's no star athlete. The guy's just lanky. He's out of shape and non athletic. The actor playing Rudy is more athletic than Vince Vaughn I bet.
he's all-state baby, he'll make it rain out here.
RED SEVEN! RED SEVEN! HOT ROUTE!

Never realized until this clip, that Vince Vaughn was in this movie. I recognized the voice immediately.
Wow talk about getting dressed down in front of everyone
+Matthew Smith Most likely he was telling that guy the truth.
@@navblue20 the truth is cruel, and when a guy like this has been playing subpar to his talent for so long...it needed to be said...nobody on the team said a word, because they all knew it was true...and him acting like a primadonna after Rudy lit him up just settled it for everybody. Good thing was he redeemed himself at the end of the Georgia Tech game, and got Rudy to play...he learned how to be a good teammate in the end and I was glad to see the moment in the film.
Virtually nothing in this movie is true...but it makes us feel good.
Loved this movie. Nephew and I watched this together so many times.
Ok but young Vince Vaughn was FOIIIIIINNNEEE! 💀😍😍😍

lmao
I wish Vince Vaughn was in more serious movies like Rudy and Hacksaw ridge, although my favorite comedy of his is Dodgeball
O'Hara's situational awareness was still better than Derek Carr's.
And he has an actual helmet
The score is everything!
Dude wasn’t running at all😂
