I purchased a brand new Grand Seiko Spring Drive in celebration of one of the most difficult years of my life in the military this year. It is my first luxury watch.
"Did the price point get updated" is the big question. Seiko enthusiasts have noted that Seiko is quietly upping their prices, such as the case with the Alpinist.
I'm currently wearing the red one while deployed overseas with the Army. Absolutely amazing watch! Can't wait to get home and make a video about it. I'll eventually buy the black one too.
@@secondrickamendment4770 The watch is more of a rust, or maroon than red and actually looks quite good with OCPs. I wouldn’t wear it into the field, but in garrison, it’s well within regulation. Strait from 670-1, “Soldiers may wear a wristwatch, but it must be conservative in appearance. Watches with bright colors, overly elaborate designs, or excessive ornamentation that could detract from the uniform's professional appearance are not permitted.”
Big fan of the PADI version of the Samurai - the blue metallic ocean surface design of the dial is incredible. One of my favourite watches. Blue minute hand and ceramic bezel, and a sapphire crystal. Looks great on either the stock PADI rubber strap or a hexad bracelet.
I bought this watch from the Teddy website last week. When I received this exact watch it was slightly scratched on the bracelet and all of the plastic was already removed. There were fingerprints all over it that were lazily wiped off. That feeling of buying a new watch was completely stolen from me. I’ll prob never buy from him again but I’ll still watch his videos I guess
That's horrible. No one wants to buy someone's in-store try-ons or returned watches. A slight tangent, but this is also why I am perpetually puzzled every time a watch UA-camr promotes a watch AD in their videos, talking about how "the kind folks at XYZ lent me this watch for this video." The UA-camr is wearing these watches upwards to a week or more for these videos, putting their skin grease, scratches, dead skins all over them as they review and shoot their videos, and what happens after? Just a thorough clean up and voila, turn around and sell it to some schmuck as "brand new?" How do these people think it's ever okay to sell used watches as brand new, let alone think that's also a good idea to advertise that they freely lend their sellable merchandise for use? So crazy. If people wanted to buy used, they'd buy used and take the upfront discount that go with it. These ADs need to stop scamming people.
No mention in your post...but perhaps did you contact their C/S to let them know and give them the opportunity to correct the issue? If so, perhaps comments on what transpired...was the problem corrected (new watch sent), etc, etc.
I have 2 king samurai models(white waffle and manta dial)with ceramic bezels and sapphire crystal, one on hex bracelet and the other on rubber strap...love them..they look great
I’ve always been a big fan of the samurai case shape, so these shogurai’s are right up my alley. Also, I love red dials/bezels. If they made a white dial and red bezel special edition they can just take my money now! Lol
Love it - the bezel convex is perfect, the hands are chunky and super legible, the 'flatness' of the dial and hands together gives it a very stable and collected look. Could do without the 4:30 tiny date but that seems to be the new 'thing' - thankfully it's less than ostentatious.
Teddy. Top job, as always. I bought my stealthy Samurai (srpl15) in Ginza, Tokyo, just next to the Seiko museum, so it has a story to it. The lack of sapphire is upsetting indeed, but nevertheless it is a cool timepice with distinctive looks. It doesn't get as muc wrist time as my other, mostly cushion shaped Seikos, but definitely a keeper in my collection. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
I had this for a week. Sold some guitars and got this one in red. That same week my girlfriend got me a cocktail time starbar as a surprise gift, so i couldnt justify having the samurai… and damn i regret returning it…. I wanted a Pelagos for so long, but now i want this Seiko!
That was strange - i looked up from my Seiko samurai to see a new video all about Seiko samurais. I love mine; it’s become my everyday beater watch and looks great doing it.
Mine was been back-and-forth to seiko several times. When it wasn’t in the shop, I wore it every day until the one and only time I actually wore it diving no deeper than 40 feet, flooded the very first time seiko would notstand behind their product!
I have the SRPL13. I particularly like the smooth seconds hand movement. I also like the stealth date window that I can easily ignore when I've forgotten to adjust it. I have it on a black sail cloth strap. Just FYI, it is smaller than the original samurai, but it's not small. For me it's a good size and I like the monochrome black white thing. Teddy is right about the end lugs curving down, creating a better fit.
Great review as always. I appreciate the discussion of the lack of sapphire and the advantages of Hardlex. As pointed out, the lack of sapphire at this price point in 2024 is puzzling, especially since Seiko has older Samurai models with sapphire now. If they are afraid of going to $625 like those sapphire Samurai models, make it $595 or $599. I would rather pay more and get the sapphire. That little bit more is nothing at the price point to get sapphire. The SRPL11 is definitely the star of the show, which is no knock on the other 2. My only quibble with that one is the lack of a color matched date wheel. I am not always a stickler for that, but I think it is the best route in with the overall design of this model. I have not made it to my Seiko AD to see these yet, but I am definitely interested. The SRPL11 is definitely one I'd consider, especially with a discount.
Another great review video Teddy! Thanks for sharing your insights. I own the black variation of the new “Samurai” and I am very positively surprised by the design and the wearability of the watch! I agree about the sapphire and the clasp although I am not sure with these enhancements if the price would have been the same! I think the price point is fair given the fact that everything has gone up and microbrands who haven’t invested in R&D are selling watches with mainly Seiko movements for much higher prices.
Thanks for an informative review! Own the SRPL13, paid around $500. Find this watch very wearable and a reasonable value. Nearly went 62MAS but was surprised by sloppy ends links on a $1300 watch.
Hey Teddy, big fan of your work and a Seiko fanboy from Transylvania. I bought the blacked-out JDM version of the new Samurai in Ginza, Tokyo. I was looking for an SPB143, but got this new release instead, because I found a huge deal on it, and pulled the trigger... I kinda' dig it, but have regrets about the 62mas, can't stop thinking about it. Might just pull the trigger on that one too, but this will stay in my collection as a reminder of my Japanese trip.
I own the SRP-03 (purchased from Teddy) and love it. I own dive watches from Rolex, Omega, Tudor, etc. and have to say these are simply outstanding. It’s not only in my rotation, but I wear it probably more often than all the others. The chiseled case alone does it for me, and love the industrial look. Outstanding video as usual.
@@brainloop99 I have an Ediface that I paid closer to $100 which comes with sapphire, but to me, there has been difference with Hardlex and sapphire. Maybe I need to wait 20 years for sapphire to prove it's worth or get a job in construction.
I think I'll wait until they release a special edition with sapphire cristal and ceramic bezel. It happened with the previous model and it'll happen with the new model. And you know it 😊
I picked up the SRPL13 for my nephew's 18th birthday. It was pretty hard to put in the mail on account of jealousy!... a very nice piece, don't know how you do better for the price, at least in seiko land..
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the MAMACOO's watches are the most intriguing.
The SRPJ93 is technically a King Samurai as well. Sapphire crystal and Ceramic bezel insert. I own one and absolutely adore it! It's like a cheap Omega PO Ultra Deep Summer Blue! 😂
I own two Samurais, one a Pepsi PADI and the other the "standard" black and grey. I own over a dozen watches, but the Samurais easily get the most wrist time. I think it is Seiko's most underrated collection. So, I love these new releases! Great design, size, hands, finish. My only problem, and the thing keeping me from buying a new one, is the color options. I love the red color, it has traditional samurai armor vibes, but it doesn't match my style. The black is very nice too, but there are SO many black and white watches that are on my want list, that it just doesn't make the cut. It would sit behind the Citizen Promaster Fujitsubo, Seiko SPB143, Omega Seamaster no date, etc. etc. Maybe I'll get pulled in next year with a release of a "Save the Ocean" or a different limited edition?
I have the black pvd samurai. I agree it’s a bit expensive for what you get but I’ve really enjoyed the watch. I think the rubber strap is terrible but I switched it out for a black and gray nato and didn’t take it off for a month after that.
For me the Seiko turtle is a lot more comfortable for all day wear. I did try the new samurai, but it does not sit well for me. It does have a nice dial.
@@No--0--SpinLocal independent jewelry stores which are authorized Seiko dealers. Mine didn’t have the 13 in stock but it was ordered and arrived in less than one week.
They are good looking watches. If I was buying a diver for diving purposes (at this price range), it would be this or a Citizen. But for me personally… I want an Arnie and this doesn’t scratch that itch. Still a very nice collection.
I'm wearing a new black Samurai which I purchased at a sizable discount. It's a perfect, comfortable fit on my 6 5/8 wrist. I consider the bracelet quite acceptable for a watch in the price range. The accuracy is minus 3-4 seconds per day.
It is magnificent but at 650€ it would have been better to add a Sapphire glass, for 630€ there is the Prospex Samuraï Save Ocean model, waterproof to 200m and with a Sapphire glass.

Teddy, you've convinced me to buy my very first Seiko abt a year ago! And since then I'm officially falling into the rabbit hole. Not complaining though except my wallet ..
I have a blue lagoon Samurai. Gorgeous watch but i never wear it. I've realized it's too big for me... I think these look much better in this smaller size.
Hi Teddy, can I ask you for a hot take on the Seiko "Dark Depths" prospex, please? Am interested in one for Xmas. A few commentators have said except the strap, it's very good and punching above the price point.
Hello Teddy, I really enjoy watching your videos! Could you please make one about the New Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 40mm (T120.807.11.091.00)? Thank you!
How did you miss the new Seiko Diver SPB481, SPB483, and my favorite of the 3 model, SPB485. Those watches are definitely gorgeous with a 3 day power reserve. The only problem I got with all of them is the pricing at $1,100. More than $1,000 is just way too greedy for these levels of quality. I am going to wait for a big discount for them and buy one.
I jumped on the black PVD version over the summer but didn't notice that a hardlex crystal was being used instead of sapphire--my bad. I still love the watch and I think it looks great but I don't think I'm getting another Seiko or any watch at this price point with these low grade materials. There are an increasing number of competitors with far better materials at this price and companies like Seiko need to step up at least a little. Brand recognition only gets you so far.
Its better. Black version is relatively handsome, and size now is more appropriate for most wrists. A crowded space however as you discussed. PS. somewhat mind numbing just how many different watch models Seiko sells. What a behemoth Seiko is. Seems unmanageable to offer so many models. Having owned more than a few Seikos, my favorite Seiko I won't sell is Tuna SBBN033 300m with stainless bezel, polished shroud and domed Hardlex. A blingy tool watch which seems to be contradiction, but it isn't. Most accurate quartz movement I own and the battery lasts forever it seems.
I love my previous gen seiko samurai black, but I will say, the bracelet has its problems. The pins will fall out when go to remove links and make adjustments. I almost can’t wear mine anymore due to pins in the links falling out
As with a lot of other Prospex watches, I like it. But I’m not buying one until they take the X off the dial. I think it makes their watches look cheap.
Everyone needs to stop with saying Hardlex has advantages, no it doesn’t. It’s a cost cutting measure, it’s inferior in every way to sapphire. Otherwise the premium dive watches would use it. If you’re paying over $150 for it a watch, you should expect a sapphire they are dirt cheap wholesale.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages (and Teddy did a good vid on exactly this recently). Suggesting there are NO advantages to Hardlex (cost aside) is simple delusional.
Hardlex is so shit. With acrylic you can at least do something, and my acrylic Casios don’t get any scratches for unknown reasons. But all Hardlex/mineral watches get a deep scratch within a month or two and then I’m just stuck with it. Even 100$ Seiko Essentials have sapphire, it’s beyond stupid that Seiko even considers producing modern divers with that obsolete crystal.
@@beanwithbaconmegarocketOmega will still also charge you thousands of dollars for watch with a hesalite crystal so that was an awful choice to use as an example.
You can buff out hardlex and also I have 3 watches with hardlex over 4 years now with no scratch. You're either actively going at it with an ice pick or your horribly ataxic.

Those watches are definitely gorgeous with a 3 day power reserve. The only problem I got with all of them is the pricing at $1,100. More than $1,000 is just way too greedy for these levels of quality. I am going to wait for a big discount for them and buy one.
Got a modded mini and it's delicious. 🤤
Hi Teddy, Big fan of yours. Please do make a video of All New "Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 40mm

Beautiful. Although, I love the original size. I am not on board with the shrinking watches.
Only thing I care about is did the price go down? Seiko prices are about double what they should be across the board
What’s the jacket Teddy is wearing
Honey, wake up, Teddy dropped a Seiko vid.
I love this watch
That 4:30 date window would bug me. It looks like an after thought. 😢
I miss the old Seiko, but I also miss lower cost of goods in general hahahaha
I love my previous gen seiko samurai black, but I will say, the bracelet has its problems. The pins will fall out when go to remove links and make adjustments. I almost can’t wear mine anymore due to pins in the links falling out
I wish Seiko would put sapphire glass on 5 sports.
Agree. People talk about clarity and scratch repair all that as if luxury brands like Omega that use sapphire have murky and scratched glass.
