It has been a war for a long time whether or not "Satisfaction" or "Stairway to Heaven" was the greatest rock song of all time. Since "Stairway to Heaven" was released in 1971, that leaves The Rolling Stones at the top.
Not really because of quality but because it was so stunningly different to anything else at the time. the opening guitar riff is basically the beginning of hard rock. For pure songwriting quality I'd pick Tracks of my tears or In my life.

70's and mid to late 60's is all i listen to. I was born in 69 but that era of music is just amazing, unbelievable and absolutely beautiful. I don't even know what is playing or who it is with today's music. From the small bits I've heard it has no soul, no heart, just plastic disposable manufactured music.
