  • Just a short video on how to clean and assemble the rocker tubes and lifters for the SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) Mitsubishi 6G74 motor. The procedure is basically the same for the SOHC 6G75 and 6G72 motors, including the older 12-valve 6G72.

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Magna tried everything to solve the noisey lash ajusters when the engine is cold which were replaced tried differants brands and grades of oil finnerly worked it out it was the timing belt was worn so the cam shaft was out of wack a new belt the car sounds like a new one now @ 230000 klm on the clock it was about 40k over needing it changed so good chance that can be thge problem too.

Yeah absolutely. Messed up timing belts or a worn tensioner which causes a loose belt can cause a severe rattle - and sometimes skip a tooth on the cam!

KaldeBoch, did you pull it apart and find out the lifter's were stuffed? I'm considering tackling this, I have the same problem, but if i pull it apart and the lifters are stuffed it might be a job for the mechanic...Any advice?

Scratch that, obviously they come on anyway so shouldn't make a difference. I'll get into it soon. Thanks for the vid

Russell H once you get to this point the lifters are already out. Easy job to replace them from here. But the reason I did the job in the first place was because lifters were ticking.

Would you recomend priming them on petrol instead of diesel for disassembly and clean up?

No because petrol has poor lubrication compared to diesel.

Thanks for the great detailed video mate, I appreciate that! Do you torque the rocker shaft bolts from middle to outer or the other way around?

DRJIVAN You know, I can't remember and I don't have that car anymore. :-(

I have the same engine in my Diamante, or Magna in Austrailia and its making ticking noises in the same part your video was working in, I want to open it and investigate this weekend and I was wondering if I should replace only one lifter or replace all, also is it possible to recycle lifters? I would just like to have your take on this. Thankyou in advance.

Thanks for this video mate, i'm about to replacement valve stem seals on my pajero which uses a similar if not the same engine as displayed here. I know this was uploaded almost a decade ago but i'm just wondering if you can tell me if you needed bleed the adjusters before install? or can i just pop the new adjusters in the rocker arms and torque everything up.

Hi Paul, yeah they're the same process, it's basically the same motor. The official guide says to bleed them using diesel before installation. It's not much more than a thin piece of metal and a bowl of diesel needed to get it done. You just keep 'em submerged in the diesel and pump them with the metal rod/pin into the hole until all the air is out and you can't compress the lifter with your fingers. Then you leave it in the diesel until you're ready to install.

Mate did you need to remove the cam oil seals ?

    • @KaldekBoch

Not for this job, no. The cams don't get touched.
