Dr. Emily Levesque (University of Washington)
Dr. Levesque interviewed over 100 astronomer colleagues to record what it was like to do astronomical observing in the past, what the experience is today, and how they expect it will change in the future. In her book, The Last Stargazers, and in this talk, she tells the stories of how astronomers really do their work in our time, and what different kinds of telescopes reveal about the universe. Hear about the telescope that got shot and the astronomer that discovered how microwave ovens really get used, plus many other revealing (and occasionally funny) chronicles of how astronomers use their instruments.
So happy to start another lecture series. I learn something new every time. By the way, if you have clear skies tonight there's a 99% full Moon and if you look above at to the left of the Moon through a telescope or binoculars you may be able to see Uranus.
Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video.
Even though the shooting incident "wasn't that bad", it's a good example of how effed-up Texas is.
I like artificial intelligence it's funny
Thanks for sharing. I had the opportunity to see a rocket launch in 2018. Incredible experience. I uploaded a pretty fun montage of the trip to my channel.
Just call it Spitsbergen, the original Dutch name :)
But did the mirror fall out of the Telescope or not... Don't keep us hanging...!???
Buy the book that was intentional.
Thank you for another great lecture! (FYI: 0:00 Introduction, 3:07 Lecture, 56:05 Q&A)
We have now fixed it, so it starts with the introduction right away.
