- On the seashore-A reminiscence (Na břehu mořském-Vzpomínka) is dated 29 September 1861 and was published as Smetana’s Op 17. It is an evocation of waves lapping the shore near Gothenburg in Sweden, where Smetana was based between 1856 and 1861. These were years when he was in regular contact with Liszt, and in 1857 he visited the great man in Weimar. A performance of Liszt’s Faust Symphony was a highlight of the visit, and on his return to Sweden he composed two important tone poems: Richard III and Wallenstein’s Camp. He also composed a number of piano works that owe stylistic debts to his mentor, including this very Lisztian concert étude, On the seashore. Smetana-a very fine pianist-was invited by Ferdinand Hiller to play in Cologne in November 1861 and he included his new composition in a programme that also included Liszt’s Rigoletto Fantasy and which was well received by critics.

My teacher played this to me a couple weeks ago and I instantly fell in love with it. What an amazing composer!
A charming piece!.. My favourite style! If only I could compose that way!
Messieurs Lyapunov and Rachmaninov will realize the beauty of the Late Romanticism and put it into life only decades later. Thank you for this gorgeous upload!
(Used google translate sorry)
Smetana is for some unknown reason one of the most undervalued composers for piano solo ever.
- You may listen to Chopin or Schumann on radio daily, in concert halls every week.
Just try to listen those three alternately, and compare...
Charming piece, and very "efficient" in fact ... Everybody can find there what he is looking for : virtuosity, curiosity, strange modulations or romantic feeling ... A shame it is quite never played. Thank you !
You're welcome. :D
Today, 17 December 2016, was the first time I have heard this work, and I am aged 72. This is the joy of You Tube, to hear works no longer performed live or on the radio
thanks for the appreciation, but i have no plans of making another channel.
스메타나가 이렇게 훌륭하고 환상적인 피아노 곡을 썼다니 정말 놀랍네요
좋은연주 감사합니다
Magnifique étude !
The biggest a Czech composer Bedřich Smetana.
These muzic writte in the Prag. 🇨🇿
a beatiful piece.I couldn t play stuff like that now.
Well, me either. *sigh*
My piano teacher recommended to play this piece and I work reall hard on this piece but there is one problem... It has 13 pages and you need a big stamina to play it (Especially the big jumps in octaves in enormus speed), that is the reason why this etude might be even harder than Liszt Transcendental etude no.10 (Just my opinion)
Beautiful...strange modulations though
markie polo Yes, I know. But strange is sometimes beautiful... :)
@@thenameisgsarci I agree
@@thenameisgsarci indeed
Hello! Thank you for uploading this amazing piece...Is there any chance of giving me the music sheet of it...? I looked in the IMLSP Library of Smetana and doesn't have it :( ...I reaaaally want to play it,too...
Αγγελική Δαρμή LOL, yes there is: imslp.org/wiki/On_the_Seashore,_JB_1:80_(Smetana,_Bed%C5%99ich)
Thank you very much! :) I was searching it,by its name and didn't think that it could be hiding! :D
It's my pleasure... :D
I love the texture but I would romance it up a bit more. It goes in strange places.
I really love your classical pieces with sheets. Maybe you should put them in an extra channel if you continue doing this :-)
Nice, although the performer totally ignored the sfz and rinfz markings
where can i get the sheet music please
You can find it in the description.
