The real campanella is the 1838 version because it's faithful to the original one for violin. The 1851 version is not a real piano transcription but instead it's a departure from original piece of Paganini, so it's more like "A theme on La campanella", more a standalone pieace for piano, inspired by the original one of Paganini for violin.

The older version seems much more clunky; the revised version seems to flow and makes more sense musically to me.
Thats actually what I like about the older version
The older sounds like a closer transposition from the violin original composition so it almost sounds like it was meant to be played that way.
though liszt was far more musically mature when he revised these etudes, i still think the original flows pretty well despite parts being grabbed from like 2 concertos and many movements.
The only reason I like the older version more is because the newer version is overplayed af.

Okay so I just went to liszten* XD his performance of Liszt/Paganini Etude No. 4 in E-major of the "Six Grandes Etudes de Paganini" - Arpeggio, and in his comment he said he would perform the 1838 version of this piece! THERE ARE LIKE CLOSE TO NO RECORDINGS OF THE 1838 VERSION. GO TRAUM

I have never doubted Maestro's ability. He is born to play piano. It's just a matter of time, he only has the same 24 hours as you and I have.
In the meantime, I simply revisit ALL his 259 videos on Traum Piano, the Traumian channel and this Radio channel.

The 2nd version is more "Campana" (Bell) and makes more sense to me. I also enjoyed it more.
The original Campanella has part of the third movements of Paganini's concerto 1 and 2

Yes that was his point in making it. The revised one is more like a variation on a theme or something else that doesn’t really fit the name

Honestly I don't really understand why "La campenella" has been recognised as "one of the hardest piano pieces in the world." It is in fact one of the easiest etude liszt have ever written. But the musicality in this music is indeed good, which could be one of the reason it's famous for. If you guys wish to see somthing's really hard check this out：S.140 No.4b, Étude d'exécution transcendante d'après Paganini
That is indeed true. In fact, only 1 human that manage to play it at tempo (or maybe faster) which is Yi Chung Huang. I would say he actually is in top 5 of all pianist in term of technically

1838년 S.140 버전은 중간에 바이올린 협주곡 1번 3악장 멜로디를 차용함으로써 곡이 한층 더 풍성해진 듯한 느낌을 주는 것 같아요. 그러다가 마지막에 가서는 다시 처음 멜로디로 돌아가는 득 하다가 화려하게 마무리짓는게 매력인 것 같아요🎹🔥💛
違う作品として聴けば、先の作品もかなり素敵です。カンパネラはやはりよく聞かれる後者がしっくりきますね。

1838 was interesting...maybe because I practised the 1851 so much during the peak of my abilities when younger, I can't really do a fair comparison in my heart because I've put so much more into my relationship with the 1851 piece. From that perspective, the 1838 feels almost embryonic/primitive in comparison. Even if it is still very nice, the piece somehow feels more clunky in transition and technique...wondering how much of that is because of the violin dimension.

귀에 익숙함의 차이인지 아니면 원래 의도인지 모르겠지만 뒤에 나온 연주가 더 자연스럽고 매끄럽고 듣기에도 치기에도 편안(?)한 느낌을 주고 오리지널이라고 한 부분은 상대적으로 풍성하고 화려한 느낌인데 '갑자기 왜 이렇게?' 싶은 부분이 좀 있는 것 같다? 그런 차이가 있지만 어느 쪽도 좋네요.

There are more bells in the newer version, so it's more of a CAMPANELLA than the older variant. I definitely prefer the newer one.

Given that the original Paganini one is in B minor, I'm curious about why he transposed it. At first I thought it was because having more black keys makes the leaps easier but, given that the 1838 version doesn't have to many of those and is still transposed, that might not be the reason.
The original S.420 one was a semitone higher, the main melody, instead of being on an Eb, its on ENatural, like, E E D C C B A Ab A B.
More beautiful the second version
Here it is not about which is the best but about enjoying these two great masterpieces of a great genius. The one who could give an opinion would be Liszt himself, contact him through a Ouija board 😜.

Very interesting comparison. I had never heard the 1838 version before, but the 1851 is one of my favourite pieces.
First thing that jumps out is how the 1851 is far more consistent about that main theme. It comes back in technical variations 5 times, while the 1838 only really states it once and then references it briefly later on. There's also the significant key change in the 1838 that lasts till the end; I was waiting for it to come back and recapitulate the minor theme but it just ended.
That said, there are a few aspects of the 1838 I really like. The way the theme is stated would've been a cool 6th variation in the 1851 version I think, especially that "spicier" chordal accompaniment.

La primera versión es una obra con desarrollo y variedad, una joya que no debe olvidarse y creo debería tocarse más seguido, aunque si bien ese final es muy bello, es más convencional y optimista.
En cambio, la versión posterior, es como un tema con variaciones. Listz va estirando el hermoso, elegante y burlesco motivo de una manera ingeniosa para darle a la pieza una transformación dionisiaca y más salvaje para el final que yo creo que da un mejor cierre al estudio.
Para mí, la versión de 1838, tiene un desarrollo más interesante y cerebral y la versión de 1851 tiene un desarrollo más contenido y limitado que en cambio apuesta más por el contenido emocional desatado.

the newer version missed out an entire motif. probably to make it easier to play? i enjoyed both versions but like the old version a little more.
I like both! But a little bit more the newer! The 1838 is more melodic, the 1851 is more techinque (also melodic but more difficult!)

Per me è più bella la seconda versione perché è più appassionante e inoltre sembra più variata e ornata rispetto alla campanella di Paganini, rendendola sempre un'esecuzione trascendentale. Comunque sono violinista e mi piace tantissimo anche la Campanella di Paganini, per non creare fraintendimenti.
When a difficult piano piece is too simple and you make it more... impossible...
It would be better to combine the technique of the opening from the 1851 version with the variety of themes from the 1838 version.
Introducing busoni's version
The older version has many moments that I prefer musically, but don't work very well on the piano. The second version is far more pianistic, at the cost of some of the unbridled originality.

The original had a lot more influence from violin concerto no. 1. It seemed to pull from Paganinis first two violin concertos, and I think it’s better for it.

두번째 게 첫번째 것에서 난이도 훨씬 낮춘거임. 원래는 작은종에 의한 대환상곡이라고 첫번째보다도 어려운 버전이 있었는데 곡 분량도 너무 길고 계속 듣고 있기도 힘들 정도로 음악성이 좋지 못해서 총 두번의 리메이크를 거쳐 지금의 라 캄파넬라가 됨

WOW, I definitely prefer the 1838 version, because it is a fuller, more GRANDE rondo that also employed the 3rd movement of Paganini’s 1st violin concerto (while la Campanella is the 3rd movement of his 2nd violin concerto). There is also the “intermediate” version in Ab minor that is purely la Campanella, with all the 1st violin concerto materials removed. (Nikita Magaloff recorded that version.)

Second version SO much better. It is perfectly constructed. The first has Paganini's flaws- he was great at coming up with virtuoso material but he was bad at construction - the first version wanders around, and just ends without resolving well.

What did Liszt say about the two versions? Why did he revise the original?
I've heard that that's because the older version was much harder to play and some people asked it to be simplified... But sounds silly if you think about it...

The S.420 is the hardest versión of all the five versions that liszt made.
