Monica’s game just was a nightmare for conchita ( and arantxa to a lesser extent) they didn’t have the games to exploit Monica’s weaknesses and she could just stand in and take the ball early and negate all the spins they liked to use . Conchita stood so far back she was always exposed to drop shots which Monica did so well . Arantxa had better movement and her all court game was so much better so she could trouble Monica if she was playing aggressively in my opinion Arantxa was a much better tactical player than Conchita .
One of her biggest problems IMO was her court positioning as she was often too far behind the baseline. Even after she hit a good shot, she would often be left scrambling if her opponent hit a good shot back. This was especially noticeable against opponents who hit the ball on the rise or had good anticipation/court positioning like Seles and Hingis.

Ohh love to see that Miami match , if i remember Monica was a set and break down which was a very strange result as conchita was on the way down the rankings at that stage and rarely had good results .Thank goodness Monica pulled through.

Conchita had great games for clay courts but always lacked the confidence when facing the very top players of her generation.
