Exactly!! Here in Brazil we oftenly change the history to agree with who's running the country's interests. So, our imperial flags contained green due to Bragança and yellow due Habsburgo's family colors... They were our first emperor and his wife Leopoldina of Habsburgo, Austria's Emperor's daughter. Then, in 1889 we've had an military coup, which banned our imperial family to Europe, setting up the republic instead the current parliamentary monarchy. They called this military coup as "The Republic Proclamation" and it's how we learn in class until today. So they suggest this change was politically correct, democratic and claimed by population. And it was NOT. People loved Pedro II, the emperor. The parliament was also closed and monarchy issues forbidden until 1988 constitution. They needed, therefore, to make people forget the meanings of our imperial flag colours,... A new version of this meanings was created: Green should mean our forests, Yellow our wealthy, Blue our rivers and sky and White means the peace. "Ordem e Progresso" or "Order and Progress" is a positivist statement, created by Augusto Conte, philosophy agreed by substantial part of the Army in that time...

Actually, despite being called Pedro IV in Portugal, in Brazillian's history classes he is only referred to as Pedro I (I didn't even know he could be called Pedro IV).
Awesome video video, although the flag colors nowadays represets the forests, the wealth and the sky with stars, in the Imperial times the green was indeed for the Bragança House, of Emperor Pedro I, but the Yellow was actually the colors House of Habsburg of our Empress, Pedro's wife. Empress Leopoldina is Austrian, and not a coincidence Brazil have one of the biggest german heritage in the world, behind only US if I'm not wrong. Another interesting fact, the lone star above, also represents Brazil's presence in both hemispheres.
As some people already commented, the yellow stands for House Hapsburg of Austria. But order and progress have its special meaning. It is the motto of the Positivist "Religion" that was much in vogue on the turn of the XIX century in Brazil. The full motto is "Love as a principle, Order as a basis and Progress as an end". But Love was cut out... Also, the position of the stars reflect Rio de Janeiro´s sky on the exact moment of the declaration of the Republic, Nov, 15th, 1989 at 8pm. And each star represents the nearest existing start closest to each state´s capital. So adding and removing stars is quite a difficult task. So difficult that during the last 50 years of the XX century, some states were divided in two (for political reasons) and no extra stars were added to the flag
I really like your video, very nice. Im Brazilian, I just have one thing, if you don't mind (and it is not a criticism, just a point): the lonely star above not represent Pará, represent Brasilia the Capital of Brazil. Beside this, your video is very good and informative. Thank you.
Very good video, just some corrections. First of all, the story of the colors representing forests and wealth is a republican invention to desassociate with monarchy and create a national identity. Another correction is about history. For Brazil, Pedro was Dom Pedro I, for Portugal (after political pressure he returned in 1831 and was coronated) he is Dom Pedro IV. And Dom João VI actually encouraged the independence by Pedro because, in Portugal, he was living a political crisis called Revolução do Porto that wanted the end of absolutism and the control over Brazil trades again (they have lost it after the arriving of the royal family because of England's treaties), also this would cause revolutions in Brazil that would, anyway, cause independence, so, João sent a letter that said that Pedro should have Brazil's independence by his hands for him not to lose power. Finally, the affirmative that Pará is the only state above Equator is wrong nowadays because from Pará, have seceded many states, like Amapá and Roraima, both above Equator. I hope I have helped.
Awesome video, bro! Gotta say tho that the star above the banner used to reperesente Pará, but nowadays represents the Braziian Federal Distric, where is placed it's capital. And in Brazil, Pedro IV of Portugal is known as Pedro I of Brazil.
Brazilian here, and as I've heard, the only star above the white like would be the federal district of Brasília, since it's our capital. Also to disprove your statement, there are only 2 states that are above the equator line, and Para is not one of them (the line cuts through the state)
Correct, the banner represents the Ecuador line and the star above it represents the state of Pará. But the reason is because Pará is the state with largest area above Ecuador. There are more states in the north, but smaller than Pará.
I confess I didn't know a lot of these informations about the Brazilian flag, and I'm Brazilian. I'm specially surprised about the star above the white line. I've always believed it was supposed to be the Brazilian capital, Brasília. Thank you for clearing that up.
Wow, this is the first video made by someone that lives outside Brazil and talks about something of our country that isn't full os brazilians at the comment section
people might get confused over D. Pedro IV - he's known as D. Pedro I in Brazil and many people in there don't even imagine that there were others before him
I'M BRAZILIAN AND I'M FROM THE STATE OF PARÁ. The reason the star that represents us is far from the others is because we were almost an independent country, and we were the last province to recognize the Republic of Brazil.
The arrival of the King D. João VI and the portuguese court in 1808 ,to Rio de Janeiro, after the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal ,established the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil. This lasted from 1808 to 1822, when Brazil declared independence as a Monarchy , the Empire of Brazil. The national flag was created by the french artist Debret, and was inspired by french army flags. The yelow collor represents the House of Habsburg of the Empress and regent Leopoldina of Habsburg,who married Dom Pedro I. The green collor the House of Bragança or Braganza of Portugal.
Yellow = House of Habsburg
Green = House of Braganza

But the reason is because Pará is the state with largest area above Ecuador. There are more states in the north, but smaller than Pará.
good job ! go ahead now
Quem ama América como eu like no meu comentário
I confess I didn't know a lot of these informations about the Brazilian flag, and I'm Brazilian.
I'm specially surprised about the star above the white line. I've always believed it was supposed to be the Brazilian capital, Brasília. Thank you for clearing that up.
Great job!
good job! very interesting
“Complexo do vira-lata” is in every place here!!!!

It would be fun to see Jim Parsons on a future episode, maybe narrating or co-narrating. Have you thought about it?
DeixarEmBranco aah é muito fácil, o cara mora que é Português entrar em contato com ele e ainda fazer ele narrar o video. Simples demais.
I am a brazilian and i loved this video

Wow, this is the first video made by someone that lives outside Brazil and talks about something of our country that isn't full os brazilians at the comment section
Actually it is, but for some reason we are speaking english here, not portuguese like we use to do
Great job.
people might get confused over D. Pedro IV - he's known as D. Pedro I in Brazil and many people in there don't even imagine that there were others before him
The only star above the banner represents Pará, but there are 3 other states that are above the equator line (Amazonas, Amapá and Roraima)
I'M BRAZILIAN AND I'M FROM THE STATE OF PARÁ.
The reason the star that represents us is far from the others is because we
were almost an independent country, and we were the last province to
recognize the Republic of Brazil.
N man, é pq o Grao-Pará reunia praticamente o norte inteiro então era o unico Estado ao norte do equador
